its like going on holiday - your more likly to let your hair down as you are always thinking "hell I'll never see these people again anyways" it works much the same online except that you know 9 times out of 10 you wont meet them ever
plus the points made by whizz - when you cut out all the worries about appearance and body language people communicate easier

being online is easier because the only thing other people are seeing is the text you type and your avatar and you are not worried that the other person is not going to like you or talk to you anymore because of the way you look, dress or if you have tattoo's etc. it is pure bullshit if they use that as a excuse to not talk to you anymore they are just wasting air and space that could be used by someone who doesn't care what you look like.
Well, online communication has its pitfalls. I've been there before, when the best you had was 300 BAUD dialup, or when your email client was some kludge mainframe thing.
My input on this, though, is that I once had this huge problem with getting up in front of people and talking or doing anything. Going online, running several Internet lists at a major university, dealing with the inevitable flame wars--somehow I got past that fear.
I know it is still there. It jumped up and bit me in the butt last fall. But, I can deal with it, now.
On sites like this, the annonymity makes it easier to open up, say things you wouldn't normally say.
