My latest mistake- Removed a heatsink and fan off a cpu. The pc was being used in a dusty environment and the heatsink/fan were COVERED in dust. Anyway, after a clean I stuck it all back together. I didn't use any thermal paste when re attaching the heatsink to the cpu. I just assumed it didn't really need it. What difference could it make, right?


It made a huge difference! Within ten minutes of uptime it crashed due to overheating. To make thing worse it crashed during a critical update install...

that reminds me.. i've done that too!

...and at the time, i was so happy at watching the red hat installation move by so quickly, only to have it crash near the end of the install!
