SuSE comes with Vi just like every other version, so you can still edit configuration files by hand, as I have done. But when I'm running late, I don't have the time to sit and go through it by hand sometimes. But I have, so don't say SuSe makes you not want to learn. I've learned a lot on SuSE. You could always type "init 3".

I guess it's odd that my favorite is SuSE and my second is Slackware.

yet i know there is still a sweet base Eterm waiting for me if needed.

Btw I'd suggest you just installed a new gentoo base system, and knock yourself out finding differences between the suse cdrom's and the portage mirrors from Gentoo.
Try "emerge -s <keyword>" to see if its available in the sync-trees ... I bet you will be pleasantly surprised.

You're missing my point. You can go farther with ANY distro you want. It's still Linux....Except Gentoo, that's BSD with a Linux Kernel....Nevermind, you'll just get pissed again.

I've gone farther with SuSE. and when I started using Slackware, I thought it was easy, because I actually knew how to do things by hand from using SuSE. It's only to easy if you're un-willing to look...Bah, I'm cranky and going to bed. I've had finals all week, and I have to be to work in 7 hours.

And for some reason people think just because there is a GUI tool to do things for you, you somehow, for some reason, can't use anything else.

I'd rather knock myself out with a baseball bat than Gentoo. If I'm going to have a box down for a day and a half, I might as well be down with it.

You're not going to change my mind. Mainly because I have NetBSD, and 7 versions of Free BSD, and I don't see why I'd use Gentoo, when I could use BSD. As for one command doing updates, I like Libranet too. It's not outdated like Debian, and uses apt-get and .deb packages. And the Kernel recompile program is amazing.

Maybe YOU should try out a few of MY recomendations? Like when I told you to use Free BSD, or when I said for you to try out ROCK Linux.

You used to be a supporter of SuSE Linux. Then you install Gentoo and get bragging rights, and tell everyone they should switch from SuSE to it.

And for your information, I have 2 versions of Gentoo, including 2004. I havn't installed it yet, so I made no statements towards it, as I do at least try it before ripping it.

I'll stick to Slackware and SuSE. Install takes about 20 minutes as I have a floppy with the packages I usually use saved on it, and if I am setting the box up for another reason, I add those in.

Are you that retarded or can't you read mine or CG's previous posts ? Suse was good to me, till I found Gentoo being better suited for me. I have tried numerous distros before settling definite for Gentoo.

It seems like the three of us get into distro wars too often :D. Slack and Gentoo have been a source of numerous discussions, ok flames, between me and shrekkie on IRC.

Speak for yourself :D. I used RedHat for years and learned less than when I used Slack for a month. I at least am too lazy to learn how to edit stuff by hand unless I have to. I have a feeling that that's true for a lot of people. Slack has taught me a hell of a lot about Linux and I'm sticking with it, even if it's just for the loyalty factor.
