People use AP wrongly here IMO.... Firstly, they shouldn't be allowed in a non-sec related area... Period.... That kills the bullshitters, dead... Then, if it's an opinion you lay out, (and lets face it there are still a bunch of opinions in the sec world), and you get negged then the negger should probably be castigated because he attacked an opinion.... However, if the opinion is based on clearly disinformation then the neg stands....

Maybe we need a neg ombudsman that you can complain to.... who has the absolute ability to place your complaints on an ignore list... ;) Silly, I know......

Alliances..... phhhhht or whatever..... The children that do that are so easily spotted by the mods or JupM that it's really irrelevant.

JP: You sold the site and probably made a pretty penny in the process. If things aren't going the way you expected, well that's just tough. You can't come back and expect to start dictating things like you still run the site, because you don't, any more than I would tell someone who bought a PC off me that they should run Linux because I think it's better than Windows. If you don't like the way things are done, there's nothing stopping you (once your non-competing contract expires) from starting your own site and doing things the way you want.

Personally, I'm glad in a lot of ways that the site is run by a company rather than an individual webmaster. Yes, the site has to be run for a profit and perhaps there are more ads than would otherwise be the case, but at least I know that AO will be here in the morning because JM will ensure that they have enough money to pay the bandwidth bills (and they can probably obtain bandwidth for a LOT less than a single webmaster). Secondly, the admins on AO don't have an over-inflated "wow I run a popular hacking site, I must be really l33t" attitude which I noticed did happen once AO's membership grew significantly under JP. If they ever start charging for membership (which is my only real worry), then I'll leave, simple as.

AO was good when there were about 10,000 members and there was no antipoint system. There was a group of regular posters, some of whom (of which I am not one!) knew what they were talking about when it came to security. The others learnt from their knowledge - shared mainly in the form of informative posts and occassionally tutorials. You could start flamewars and have a laugh without worrying that some git with 10,000 APs would take offence and neg you into oblivion. That community aspect has, in my opinion, died over the past few years, regardless of who has been in charge.

In the past, I used to check AO whenever I was online, nowadays I generally only pop my head in if someone points out an interesting thread that I feel like replying to. Beyond that, there's very little I find AO worth coming to for.

And to the people who will inevitably disagree and neg me for this post, you're wasting your time. I really don't care how many green/grey/red dots there are next to my name. Depriving me of one or more of them won't make a difference to anything other than your overinflated egos.

I agree with you. Getting rid of the AntiPoints System would NOT be a popular thing to do. This goes back to my comments about sometimes needing to do what's best, and ignoring everyone that thinks you're an ******* for doing it. People on here damn near worship their green dots as false idols, does anyone think they're going to want to just let go of them? Haha, of course not.

Exactly what I was saying. AntiOnline no longer provides a REASON for people to visit. The site no longer has a niche.

The security profession is a relatively new one, and it is CONSTANTLY evolving. It's like being a doctor, it's impossible to "learn everything there is to know", because "everything" is changing on a daily basis.

It's true, you can only learn so much from most of the idiots that are still hanging around posting. Don't get me wrong, there are some VERY good users who post some VERY interesting and helpful tutorials and threads. These people know who they are, and my comments aren't meant to slight them. But, for the most part, you are right in a way. You can only learn so much from most of these users before you realize what dumbasses they are, and move along to another site.

However, I don't buy for a MINUTE that AntiOnline should simply accept that premise. Accept that the life cycle of a new user is 3 years, before they've learned all there is to learn from it. AntiOnline once pushed the very limits of the profession, and as a result, those on the cutting edge flocked here.

What I was suggesting, is that the site push the envelope of content and innovation once again....

Thanks, that was exactly my point :)

My post was exclusively geared towards people who state that "AntiOnline's level of content has gone down". I countered that by saying that it's not the level of content that has gone down, it's the perception that you have about that level that has gone down.

If the content of AO "hasn't ever changed in the last year and a half", then how could it have gone down? It couldn't, which was exactly my point, and my only point.

I thought it was pretty obvious that I was talking about AntiOnline when I said "not much left to learn anymore":
