Seems Michael likes to pick and choose. He *chose* not to fulfill his duty as a husband (read : lack of rehabilitation for terry, two kids out of wedlock), yet feels he deserves his rights as a husband.

Another thing that bothers me....is that what Dr. Kevorkian does is considered illegal and Michael's actions are considered legal. :rolleyes:

That all said, I think what's turning my stomach the most is the fact that so many groups are using this for their personal benefit (e.g., politicians, religous groups, etc.).

Although I would think that this can mean closure for most I have a feeling the "Media Engine/Hype" is just revving up and things will only become even more sensationalized. And it won't be the real Terri that's remember but the sideshow that everyone else made it to be. To me, that's taking away someone's dignity to just be human.

Perspective. In 1990 she collapsed from heart failure relative to an eating disorder. Through out that time until 1998 it was determined that a large portion of her brain died from that initial lack of oxygen. And from my own personal experience, that causes swelling which takes the brain to such and extreme pressure, more of the brain dies off. Read "DEAD". No longer alive, there are no electrical connections. This decision was made in 1998 NOT 2005. This has been a court battle from that 1998 decision. The relevence of evidence is 1998.

A lot of people take the husbands point of view to be evil. EVEN when they themselves have gone out and made a will so THEY aren't in the same position. If I was Mr. Shievo my wife would have died 3 times. Once in 1990 when her brain initialy died off while she was without oxygen for an undetermined amount of time, again in 1998 when I made the personal decision based on SOUND medical advice to legally decide her fate through marriage, then again if what Ms Mittens posted is true. As for rehabilitation, that is part of the choice. When the brain dies it never comes back, just like your kidney. If there is enough left then the remaining tissue sometimes, maybe one in a million, can relearn certain functions. Perhaps with rehabilitation she may have reached the ability of a 5 month old baby when she was 60. I would choose Mr. Schiavo's path.

It's not about not being able to feed yourself, it's not about not being able to nurture yourself, it's not about not being able to look after yourself.

Then what is it about? It's about being braindead. As far as I'm concerned, once your brain is dead, you are dead. 15+ courts concluded that, in fact, she is braindead - based on the opinions of who knows how many doctors. Those same courts concluded that there is no chance of recovery.

Whether that is true or not, I don't know - we might find out from the autopsy (kinda sucks that you can only find out after the person has died). But what if it is true? What if the autopsy determines that she indeed was braindead? That is what the courts based their decisions on, not on whether or not she was able to feed herself...

If 100's of experts say that she is braindead, and only a hand-ful die-hards (whom nobody seems to take seriously in the medical community) say she's not, what do you expect a court to do? They apply the law, and the law is that Michael had the right to do what he did.

Your argument does not sway me. The real comparisson is a mentally retarded person with some ability to a carrot. There is a reason we use the term "vegitative" state. If the "retard" as you put it was laying in a bed imovable with a feeding tube and 20 percent of his brain destroyed through an accident, then I would see your comparison. Other than that, it's an emotional response. Nurture is one thing, a baby can't nurture itself. Peralized people cannot feed themselves but they are not is the "carrot" state. And if you find your wife in that scenario, I doubt you would keep her alive.

I'm well aware of all the points in the case, thanks anyway. ;) Medical dic brain death - death when respiration and other reflexes are absent; consciousness is gone; organs can be removed for transplantation before the heartbeat stops. Not the case. Yeah true you choose your spouse not your parents. Tough call.
