I've got a very similar setup to the Duck. Only one pc at home so no router just the usb modem.
Avast AV, Adaware SE (1.06), Spyware S+D, Spyware Blaster, MS Antispyware, Zonealarm firewall + another firewall at my ISP and basic filtering on their side for malware sites (I don't trust it but hey it's free). I run Firefox on the PC my GF refuses to use anything but IE so her account runs with reduced rights. Everything is patched up to date and spyware/AV is updated daily and scanned weekly. The machine is switched off when not in use.
I don't allow any email progs to run on the machine I only use webmail.
The only thing of any 'value' on the machine is my GF's files for teaching and I back those up onto CD weekly.
I've never had a virus that wasn't caught immediately and I've not had any reported spyware on the machine for years.

On the original question.... home PCs are locked WAYYYYYYY tighter than I could ever accomplish at work. Way tighter.

Since I've moved out on my own I only have 3 computers to defend.
A laptop, desktop, and 'server' (a desktop with daemons / services depending upon which side of the fence you stand on. ;) )
Currently I have a cable modem going into a 12 port hub, to a wireless router with one client. I use 128 bit WEP, MAC filtering, No SSID, and I change the keys and passwords every so often. :) The server I have is a debian box (this week lol) thats multihomed and sits in the DMZ most of the time. I'm constantly messing around with snort, tcpdump, nessus, etherreal, disco, and other services that might further my security knowledge somewhat. I only fire up this box to hack, so if something goes awry I just shut it down, and re-install. (note: I said HACK, not CRACK) :) And my XP desktop has a software firewall, behind the NAT router, updated automatically, with AV and malware prevention / scanning / removal software.
Doesnt really give me any problems because I'm proactive, not reactive.
Jonesy, who heard that catch phrase when he first came to AO and it sorta stuck with him.
