They used to be very hard to come by. I've had my account for a few months, and in late June they were selling on eBay for hundreds of dollars (don't believe me? Look for yourself). So, I got into the business of selling them. :-D
Now, though, they're less than a dollar and everyone seems to have invites out the arse. Nonetheless, it's still not public yet, so anyone who wants them still needs to have an invitation. That said, I've still got a load of 'em... just PM me.
Yeah when I looked at ebay a few months back they were going for $5 a peice. Now they go for $1 a peice and I saw one guy selling 50 for $25. I have 12 just send me a PM.
Please include your email address in the PM so I know where to email invite too.

Jeez, just feed "free gmail account" into google's hungry mouth
click on ..... oh say page 7 . I got 4 accounts this way . To make sure its not some skript kiddie trying to use fake L's on you (upper-case i's )to get your password or something (bad if you use the same one everywhere) or
open a new browser window with "gmail.google.com/gmail" , copy and paste the rest of the link.
The reason that ppl keep getting so many invites is probably cause they've got a certain amount of users that they want to be using the service atm and they gave each user a certain amount of invites to start with. The service would then give ppl more invites depending on the frequency that they invited ppl to gmail in order to fill up their quota faster.
Seems like the most logical reason. (none of this ao users are good emailers crap :P)

Jesus, i made my account 2 days ago, i didn't recieve any e-mail in it yet and they already gave me 6 invites !

It opens a Pop Up, so turn off, press a key, etc to disable your pop up blocker. Firefox allows mine automatically since I clicked on the link.
Just get the person you want to invite to email you. When you look at the bottom of the email it'll say invite so and so in red.
I got 2 accounts about a week ago and haven't gotten ANY invites???
