This is a great clarification, I have always been confused as to why so many seemingly 'productive' members of this community (I use quotes, because to be productive, you must be a forum whore ;)) show up as banned.
It would definitley be interesting to see how many people are banned, and seeing how many of them are banned by request or as a disciplinary action.
Other than your personal amusement, what value does that information hold to you?Quote:

I was always kind of curious about what color socks people are wearing when they post in here. Could we import an Access database on this site? Maybe we could sort it by color, material, striped/non-striped, holes/no holes?

How many people do you know that actually read the AUP? I'd rather watch paint dry! There's nothing like a visible reminder that a particular forum doesn't put up with unacceptable behaviour, because there'll always be someone who decides to post a "how do I h4x0r hotmail?" type question, whatever the forum stickies or AUP say (especially on a security forum).
I don't know that I'm too keen on blocking whole ISPs unless they're clearly spam. One that seemed to pop up a lot on PCpartsreview when we were getting shedloads of spam was "cashette.ru". Believe me, if I could have worked out how to get rid of that entire domain I'd have done it!
It's got to be a balance though - on the one hand the idea of a guestbook is a place where anyone can leave a message and I don't like tarring people with the same brush. I'd like to get into the mentality of these spammers - like, are there really people who spend their entire days hunting for forums and similar places to leave their adverts for herbal viagra? Is it a computer program running on a compromised PC doing it? I can't get my head round why anyone would make such a life's work out of doing something so boring!
i have that email domain blocked on all 30 of our forums (along with about 300 others). What I go by, when I block IPs, is whether or not a search of that IP on each forum returns any legit users. Our forums have all been up a good long while now, so it would be a reasonable assumption to think that if we hadn't gotten a single legit user from an ISP by now, then we probably aren't going to get too many.
When I search an IP range and get back 40 spammers and no legit users, I block that range.
Email domains I'm less fussy about. Many spammers use the domain email that they're spamming for, like buycialis.com or such. Those are a no brainer, I ban those immediately on all 30 forums, however 1st I search to be sure they haven't already joined. If they have, banning the email won't stop them from posting. So I ban their account, if they already have one;.
Yeah, that sounds workable. I suppose we just found that admin registration solved the problem which did disappear after a while - I guess "cashette.ru" just gave up eventually! It's a lot easier with a small forum of course.
Edit I just checked the thread on Suse 10.0 and there's an example right there! What did muert0 do to get banned within the last 5 minutes?
