They are NOT part of the club. Sure they have nukes. Sure they have huge amounts of capability. But what is lacking is the physics required to deliver highly accurate attacks. There is a reason advanced super computing exports are controlled. Cray failed because of it, he had one customer on a global scale, the department of defense. His untimely death at the hands of a poorly designed interchange didn't help either.

China did not and may not have the capability for advanced testing via computer models to deliver a nicely designed package to Washington. It would have been lucky to make the US borders. Selling nuclear secrets didn't help us at all. In fact that; coupled with super computers, scares the hell out of me and pisses me off tremendously.

Others might look at recent headlines and say great. But I look at China placing a man in space and say. "Well ****, there goes the planet." In a couple of decades they'll have a station on the moon capable of delivering EMP bursts to geosynchronous satellites and not be affected. Imagine China with missile platforms in space, thanks to some stolen nuclear designs and their very own USA built super computer to figure out all the physics for them. We were never on an even playing field with either country. NOT even close.

Now look at the Soviets. If Russia was economically capable of competing with scientific research on a scale with the west and then capable of implementing "smart" bombs. Would the cold war be over? Most of their advanced weapons are based almost exactly on stolen military designs. Ever notice how much a MIG looks like an F16? Amazingly non-coincidental.

RoadClosed: check your military history, the f16 was copied off of the russian mig not the otehr way around, for high end jets (none stealth) the russians had us beat, the y jsut never had the mony to mass produce their best so they massproduced crap. Look into their vector thurst plane very impresive. A lack of resources was allways their problem not a lack of funding. As for the chinese they ahve had mid range ICBM's for years, they could allways hit us with their arsenal, just because they don't have the same acuracy dosn't mean that they where not a threat. More over they could go down to toys 'r us and get the processors to build their own supercomputer (running on their version of Unix red dog) the n64 runs on mips processors and is a supercomputer by the old definitions. All the loseinging of the restrictions did was allow US companies to expand to new markets.

Never said I qwas, I look at china as the biggest threat t oUS seurity for years to come, curently the yar content to stay in asia, but if expansionists come into power again theri and we are forced to protect our asian allies their would be some serious trouble (that whol never get in a land war in asia) Russia is a has been and will soon join that ranks of the UK and france in the stature of irelivent countries. But I do not see where leeting these countries get computer tech that they could go down to hongkong at get out of a gameing system at toys are us is a big deal.

Serious trouble is right. We couldn't to anything to protect them without full scale world war. Thanks in part to ecological extremists; we have almost no manufacturing capability to produce war devices on a large scale. Pick up something on your desk. Guess where it's made? "made in china" It's quite comical.

Based on things I have read and things I have seen and basic timelines and some history I have come to the conclusion the soviets of old had a really good spy network. They didn't have free enterprise competing for advanced fighters. They had ONE agency doing the work. Each advanced fighter produced in the US was the results of "contests" to see who could produce the best fighter for a given objective. Let's look at 2 of each of our best planes for intercept (excluding stealth fighter). The F15 and F16. These can be compared to the Mig 29 and Mig 31. Read what you will on history but I can tell you this. The F15 was picked among a large group of planes in stiff competition back in the late 60s. The First F15a flew in 1972. The Mig 29 was to appear several years later, a product of the Mikoyan Design Bureau. F15 and Mig 29 projects paralleled one another and the Mig 29 wasn't even photographed by US intelligence until 1977 by satellites. It was still in the prototype phase but the newer F16 was pretty much finished and made it's inaugural flight in 1976. In fact the Mig 29 3rd proto type didn't fly until 1981. In contrast to the F16, we had hundreds built by 1980, while the soviets were still in prototype for the M29 and later (well really at the same time) the Mig 31. By the way a Mig can turn quicker than an F16 but the F16 is over 100 mph faster. The first operational Mig 29 was designated in 1983, seven years after the first operational F15 was Delivered to Langley AFB in 1976.

Those are just some issues and then you get into designations and when they were active and what blocks were active etc. Complicated.

ICBM pwnage wasn't/isn't the issue. It's getting them here and hitting the intended target. China wasn't/isn't a large intercontinental threat from extreme distances. I think some overestimating in foreign delivery capabilities exists. At the time frame in question China did not have operating ICBMs, they were/are under development.

Zonewalker: when scotland and norther ireland are talking about leaving the empire I think we can safly say that the era of the british empire has ended. at one point it was a powerfuly nation but now it is a military and econamic also ran.
