Well Done Zone....A very good and scientific attempt to prove or disprove the viability of the Orb video. What I take away from your video after rewatching the original is that the Orb in the original video is MUCH larger than the laser pointer in the controlled study videos and did not appear to be anywhere near as concentrated overall...I am estimating the distance that the original Orb (aeallison video) traveled 30 to 40 feet and appeared to retain it's overall composition throughout and only changed in shape and size as you would expect as an object travels away from you and interacted with it's environment (light, objects..etc). I also noticed that the aeallison video Orb interacted with it's environment very complexly (changing as it entered the light, moving around objects..) In your study (AVI-2) I'm estimating that the distance to the wall was less than or approximately 10 feet. Which clearly shows that at 30 to 40 feet, the laser pointer would be virtually indistinguishable to the human eye and probably more so to the camera. The laser pointer pointed directly at the lense of the camera was not even close. Have you tried reflecting the pointer light at the lens to see what reaction the reflection would cause? I would have to say that the video requires much more investigation.....I hope everyone keeps trying to explain it....This is fun....
& the spookiest part is that u cant see it
isn't it so?
dear aeallison
Having slept on thisI have a few questions:
Does the room have any external windows ?
Does the room have a door, with a glass pannel out of site of the camera ?
What floor is this room on ?
Is the surrounding area or the building patroled ?
I didn't fully understand the initial description of this, but is the screen shot real time on playback ?
And I guess by now, has it happened again ?

steve.milner,
Behind the camera is a large glass window, actually the whole front of the store is glass panes. the glass door is just right of the cam about 10 feet away, the room is on the ground floor. I am not sure exactly what you mean by "patroled" the building is located in the old part of town and is usually very quiet at this time of night, especially in the winter. The timing of this video is approximately double the speed of the actual occurance, it is a 20 second video compressed to 10 seconds. As for happening again... I will check on that possibility in about an hour, I will post again later.
Thanks for the demo experiment. Would a diffusion filter over the camera reduce the laser pointer and light emmision? Based on the original there was enough room to get way back in the corner making the laser point much smaller. However, to recreate the movement would require either a surgical steady hand or some kind of holding device. Seems out of the league though doesn't it?
Somebody mentioned the fact that this thing doesn't get smaller as it travels farther from the camera. Compare it to the shelving when it is at the far right edge of the screen. It's about the size of one of those shelves. Then when it gets to the archway, it looks like it could nearly fill the space between the shelves. Either it is growing as it travels across the room or its size in pixels is constant instead of its size in inches.
It is also the only colour in the whole video. Why is nothing else in colour?
These two things suggest to me that it was added after the video was made.
Streik, it's only color in the blackest section of the video and you can watch it change to black and white as it crossed color thresh holds that are apparent. It also changes back to red for a brief moment at another color threshold level. You would think that if it was an orb, then the color would stay constant since it should generate enough light to fire the color ccd sensors. I think the black and white of the room is atributed to low light. When you zoom in it does change color so my argument is, it should stay constant and it should get very small at the end of the room. Of course, this isn't the greatest camera either. I would like to see somone cut out a circle about 6 inches diemeter and walk the same route holding it up to see the effect of the film. Or place a red filter on a flashlight and hold it to the camera and walk the same route. It would be interesting to see those effects.
I will try to do this for you tonight, do you have any suggestions as to exactly how this should be done. I work in this building and can perform any experiments that anyone here would suggest.Quote:

To everyone: I assure you that this is not a hoax, I am as puzzled by this as anyone. This video was not altered in any way other than to compress the 20 second clip to 10 seconds effectivly speeding up the playback to double speed. This compression was done by software during the recording, so unfortunately, I do not have a real time clip to share. I have never been accused of any hoaxes in these forums and my record here should speak for itself.
<edit>Besides my record here... if I were to try to pull off some kind of a hoax like this what would it prove? What would be my motives? I posted this here because of AO's member base of computer and scientific experts. I am obviously not doing this for status or APs as this type of thread will not generate me APs with the exception of the ones I assigned to ZoneWalker for his contribution and experimentation... I will quote Steve.Milner... nuf said</edit>

I don't think it's you trying to pull off the hoax, but I wonder about the people who sent you the clip.
I still find the constant pixel size intriguing, but assuming this is real, what would account for that.
Okay, I've looked at this in detail and I'm not convinced this isn't a light source (like a torch) being reflected off surfaces. If it was a torch beam or similar then it would explain two of the observations that have been made:
Constant size : As the beam shines further into the store then the divergence of the beam results in a larger 'spot' on the surface; this could account for the constant pixel size.
Spot colour changes, the further the spot goes into the store the less colour it has on the image, since as the beam diverges it gets less powerful, and also the reflected light has further to travel back to the camera also efecting it's brightness.
So why would a torch beam appear red? The carpet has a red reflective component, which at the 'auto' levels of the camera makes it more apparent? The window has an area of red filter?
The bit that bothers me is why shine the 'torch' up the steps, unless it's a huge co-incidence.
Sorry to keep on about this, but I am most intrigued.
I'm wondering -
Security guards, Cops, Police Helicopter.
Hope it hasn't happened again.
