Recommended Wireless Network Card

I am systems analyst at a defense company on long island. We are a little worred that some of our engineer are setting up wireless LANs in labs. I have been given the task to try and combat this if it is happening and then have the ability to check periodically to see if a LAN has been created. I have read that NetStumbler would be able to look for wireless LANs within our building.

First off does anyone have or know of a tutorial for this process or program.
Also, what wireless network card is recommended to be able to use such a program?

I have been using a Linksys Instant Wireless Card, but I would like to get a Cisco Aironet card. The Netstumbler forums are a good source of information. I posted a link below that might help you start "Stumblin."

Have fun! :D I hope that you don't have any rogue APs. They can be a real problem.

1 possible solution: Use a WLAN jammer. In ur labs.

I don't know if any product exist but its quiet easy to build:
WLAN user the same frequency as microwave oven(2.4Ghz). Take a microwave oven and dismatle the front door, tamper the safety door-switch and switch the power on.

I'd not advice u to do so because its 800 Watt power could cause severe brain anbd body damage for ppl being close to the oven jammer.

But if a product can generate 2.4GHz waves with low power (few watt) it will be harmless.
Maybe this could solve by buying yourself a Access Point and forxarding continious traffic aver it to unexisting destination, that would jam the area!!!(just an idea)

Without question: Cisco. They make the best cards. I've used linksys, d-link, negear, etc. Cisco picks things up.

BTW: If you can sping for it get an IBM Thinkpad with Cisco itegrated. It has a basic sniffer (finding only) for wifi.

no doubt, the orinocos are the best. Cisco makes a good card but they don't compare, in my mind, to the Orinoco Gold. They are made by Lucent from what I remeber and Lucent makes some great stuff. To answer your other question about how to use netstumbler, its easy. Configure your card to connect to a reserved SSID, called "ANY". Then simply start netstumbler and you're done. The list will start filling up with wireless networks.

with netstumbler, everytime i connect to a differnt network, i have to shut down netstumbler, disable my nic, then re-enable it before it will talk. anyone know an easier way to do things?
i'm using a linksys nic and win2k pro.

Get an Orinoco
