Kazaa download charge?

OK I just had to post this question here (and it may be the wrong place...so move it if it is)...
My brother told me today, and I dont know how much truth is behind it, but Kazaa in a month or so and all other P2P programs will have to charge a 99 cent download charge (imposed by the govt.?) per item downloaded. Anyone heard anything on this? Kind of sounds weird, but his friend is backing him up too (reason why I am asking). I would have thought that it would be on the tech sites etc. but no luck so far. Thanks.

music for free is just a big toss. All you can do with it is bang your head around and tap your
toes to some tunes. It doesn't provide you with any knowledge or increase your intelligence,
all it does is provide loosers like you (if you do download) a way of competing with other
loosers to see who got the latest song first. LOOSERS. Why complain about paying 99 cents
(if you are) Big deal, stop stealing peoples music go out and pay for it, cant afford it ? turn on

I agree but then I have to disagree. Too many of these so called "ar****" are putting out music that for lack of a better word..."sucks". I can't count the amount of CD's I've bought over the years and ended up getting the CD with one good song on it. I rather download a few songs from a band to see if I like it (just like borrowing your buddies new cassette back in the day) and if I do..I go out and buy their CD. Why buy it if I already have it? Because in my opinion they are a good band and they have my support. If they are putting out junk and are getting rich by putting out junk...they can ROT. I think CD's should totally leave the shelves and the record lables get rid of the middle-man (RIAA) and sell songs/cd's right off the web. Fact is that bands that tour make more money off of live shows than they do off of media. Bands that suck won't make it past but one show. Good bands will make money and do what the public likes to see...performances.

Wildred, the "government" can't impose any rules on major p2p providers for several reasons:

1) Not all p2p company's are located in America. Sharman Networks, for an example, is located in Sydney, Australia. Can our "government" impose rules on a company based in a foreign nation? Not in a long shot.

2) KaZaA, specifically, is not illegal. Its the people who are guilty of distribution of copyrighted material, not the media in which they use to do so. Is the gun manufacturer guilty if someone decided to use their gun in killing someone? (kinda obscure illustration, but it'll do)Not by any chance!

Since the beginning, music has changed the world. People rarely go a day without listening to some sort of music, whether inadvertently or not. I dont know what kinda music YOU listen to, but its much more than that ;) . Almost like a cultural thing, I guess.

As for the original post, I have not heard of KaZaA charging 99c a download. Does that include other media such as documents, pictures and other things? 99c is a bargain for a full length movie or a $5,000 computer program. Further, 99c is a little too much I would like to pay for a HOW-TO or freeware program. Makes no sense, but niether are some of the replies in this thread.

It would not make any sense from an application-level point of view because since the content are on different computers with a vast array of things to share it would be very difficult to distinguish what is copyrighted, what is not and if a file is included to be licensed to download for 99c unless KaZaA impliments a list (database of songs or other media perhaps?) to compare against the files being shared, and if downloaded, a charge is made on your credit card or other form of payment. As you may guess, the problems arise like people renaming files or modifying signatures or disabling/going around the pay feature. It's not impossible, but impractical and presents too many problems.

While I do agree P2P is presenting a problem for the music industry, but it's not just them. What about software developers, authors of books, pornographers, and others? Also, what about the problem of virus distribution? It's more than music, and the problem goes deeper than a simple bitch/moan session about the poor artist not getting a whole 23c in royalties. It's about technology and what they/we should do about the technology.

Just some thoughts.

First of all you really need to calm down tidal. I know this has been done to death but stealing is a crime which deprives someone of use, people engaging in illegal file sharing are guilty of copyright infringement.

You can make an argument that file sharers are depriving the artists and distributors of revenue that they would have gained from the sale of an album, but what about the people who never had any intention of buying an album in the first place. That is a loss of revenue that never existed.

Also what about when someone discovers a band or artist through file sharing and then becomes a fan who ends up purchasing albums, tickets to concerts, etc. When audiogalaxy was still around this happend to me rather frequently. So in this case revenue is generated.

I bought my first CD burner about a year and a half ago, my CD collection had been decimated. All but 12 of my Cds had either been lost, stolen, or destroyed. There are some albums that I have bought three times in my life, maybe even four. Considering that I had spent roughly 40$ on some albums I have absolutely no qualms about downloading those albums.

I don't know about everyone else out there, but getting an entire album off of Kazaa or a similar service can be a daunting task at times, especially for less popular artists. I've spent several hours trying to nail down every obscure track and interlude on an album before. Then you have to listen to the songs to make sure that they aren't cut off, or just plain broken. Most of the time it's just easier to go out and buy a CD, which is what I usually do when I have the money.

There are definitely people out there abusing the system, like with everything else in life.

As was stated above the government is NOT and CANNOT force P2P services to start charging .99$ a song. iTunes, an online music store run by apple, does offer this service, and has already made ALOT of money in the few months since it's release. They are an early success in the future business model of music distribution.
