I'd say this is a rather one-sided poll. Where's notepad, CoolEdit, TextPad, and DOS Edit????? How about original Vi (screw this Vi Improved crap)....
I think the original 3 are my favourites. Notepad, Edit and Vi. If you can work those three you are pretty much guarenteed to be able to edit files on any system. I suppose you'll find some of the more modern systems that don't have vi or vim on it, but those are few and far between. As far as added funcationality goes, nothing beats TextPad..... I'd let it have my children, or if it's male... I'd have surgery so I could have it's children. It's gorgeous software.
Peace,
HT
My vote goes to vi. I've only been using it for a week (ever since I started using Linux) but I really like the control it gives you. At first it seemed awkward and un-user-friendly but once I got the hang of some of the commands it was just so easy to use and move around after that!

CrapPAD! I also have a text editor made in VB called toilet paper & pencil.
I can't believe nedit isn't there, it's a great text editor. Before that I used either Kate (GUI) or pic (CLI) and on Windows I've used Notepad, Arachnophilia and 1st Page 2000 to name but a few.
notepad.exe, vi and ultra-edit or some other hexeditor...
