Am I crazy?

On another forum a guy asked what the best 939 motherboard is because he was building a new computer. Everyone said to buy a DFI. They said that they are better than Abit AND Asus. Um if it was me DFI would be my last choice I have never seen so many bad motherboards in my life...

Haha never herd of em? They are a taiwan based company and we all know how great their capasitators are... I used to replace those motherboards ALL the time im pretty sure they made some for compaq which always went bad too.

DFI is actually based out of Boise (or Twin Falls), Idaho. I've had a brief conversation with a person who works for them, and have seen some of the machines they power. DFI provided me with results for a small multi-CPU benchmark database I manage essentially on the day Athlon64 X2 processors were avaliable, and they had pushed the processor to its limits.

Also, pretty much everybody buys their capacitors from overseas. I doubt you could find many computer companies who still build (actually they mainly just assemble them now - manpower) components in the USA, especially for motherboards or graphics cards - it costs too much.

I only remember Micron as a company who still makes DRAM in the USA, and coincidently both DFI and Micron are based in Idaho. DFI is pretty easy to talk to so if you need a replacment they'll probably do it.

I don't work for DFI or Micron, but I've seen influences from both companies since I live in Idaho. Micron funds part of our EE program at my university, and I've talked to the guy who works for DFI via e-mail through a forum where I run and collect data for my multi-CPU architecture performance database. I must admit that I had never heard of DFI before, but looking at a UK hardware site I found this review:

Seems that the reviewer hadn't heard of them either. I guess they probably supply smaller local OEM outfits over here and are just coming into the retail sector?

I believe that this is not too uncommon as I have worked on these local OEM boxes and noticed various cards that I have never heard of the manufacturer before :)

I agree about the capacitors, they are manufactured by specialist companies and find their way into all sorts of kit. Computers are like automobiles, it is an assembly industry not a manufacturing one. And don't forget that the auto industry were the pioneers in JIT and closed cycle MRP ;) The computer industry is like that now.
