What in your humble opinion is the greatest OS ever created and more importantly why?
Mine:
1-Linux RedHat
2-QNX
3-Windows 98/MS-DOS
Linux RedHat
Reason: Because!
Windows 98/MS-DOS:D
even i can use it:p
Mac OS - Not only is it easy to use (as in why most schools have it) but its pretty secure and easy to lockdown.
Oh yea, its pretty stable too
DOS
If we didn't have that ugly dos command prompt, no one would have been motivated to make an OS that was graphically driven. How many years did we have (mainstream) command line based computers? 20 years maybe? I got sick of those in my early years, was glad to move to something that had pretty graphics and that box thing they called a mouse :D
Easy to use? Ha
Secure? Well if you don't know the commands, I guess so
Compatible? Well it runs on just about anything, only consisted of about 1 file to translate commands and a few hidden files to work with the IBM compatible machines. It would fit on a 160K floppy disk :)
Is it the greatest? Well only for a few decades, then it got old really quick ;)
Yeah I agree DOS is an extremely good OS. Where would we be without it?
Win2000/Dos
My next would be Linux Red Hat 7.1/ Mandrake 6.5
They are more stable and secure. Mac is not compatible with anything. Linux and windows can talk to anything
1: linux redhat
2: linux mandrake
:D
Good:
1. FreeBSD
2. Linux RedHat
3. Win2k
Bad:
1. Anything related to a Mac - I had to use one for 2 years at an older job. Macs and Mac people are in their own little world and believe its everyone elses fault that they are not compatible.
2. Windows ME - Self explanatory
3. DOS - You want command line use Win2K
Im viewing this as a web developer and general computer user though. I personally don't think its cool when companies dictate how your computer should run. You paid for the thing didn't you?
Likes:
#1 - SuSE Linux, Stability, keep out of the mainstream.
I already have gone over why i think linux is best.
2 - Windows 98 SE, If I gotta use windows, then I think this one sucks the least. I gotta play games somehow. Compatibility.
3 - DOS, It runs on -anything- you dont even need a freakin harddrive. It takes 30 seconds to set up.
BSD is good, but i dont think for a home computer.
Hates!!!:
1 - WinME, die!!!!
2 - Win95, all revisions except OSR2., Lack of Stability, Lack of making any sence at all. stupidness...

They should set up a forum so people can hate WinME na just moan. Its bad but damn you guys really hate IT!
OpenBSD is nice.
winMe is the worst thing to every be sold in mass production. This is microsoft after producing it ----->
My vote goes to Win2K. (just don't load IIS)
I just installed WinXP last night and love it so far. I don't have any experience with Linux so I can only compare Windows platforms.
I have to say that my old school favorite is definitely DOS. I was pissed when they made Win3.1 - for some reason it was so much more tedious to use at first than DOS. I always go back to DOS when Windows is acting retarded. WindowsXP is the best Windows OS though.
hummm, my favorit OS,
OS2 warp,
DOS
Win v1, just cause stolen stuff is cool
oh ya
win 98 lite!

Oh, oh, OS/2 was soooo nice! But as far as the best OS goes, I just LOVE BeOS. Shame they got bought up by Palm recently (but I'm still hoping that they will continue to work on it).
Be doesn't see as much support as other more known OSes, but it's fast, it's pretty much as crashsafe as any other POSIX OS, and it's easy to use even for newbies.
I guess OS/2 Warp would come second, but only by a small margin.
Really you liked BeOS ?
I played with it, but never saw any real world application for it,
tho it was kinda neat.

I belive the best OS ever is...
Cosmos...I believe it is called.
Read up on you OS(pl) and you will find it mentioned about 2 months ago. It is the OS for almost all Military Spy Satilites. The code reportedly was stolen from a server and copied. After that I have heard absolutly nothing on it. Some form of state secret.
I would love to be able to use it but I guess that would require me to join the military. Only problem with that is I don't like green and I hate hair cuts.
:D
I have a copy of CDOS 3.08 That is one of them the military uses. Basically it's just a multi-tasking DOS. Runs any program made for DOS or Windows (in dos, yeah it's strange how they did this) It's kind of like having dos, but if you want to play Solitare, it works. Well actually it's like windows with everything stripped down to just a command prompt is the closest thing. Man I feel old :(Quote:

That sounds very interesting!
Cdos 3.08? A multi tasking dos? Windows apps working in a command line enviroment?
<dubious>
Slakware ... just for the fact that it seems very stable ... uses memory very intellingently ... and is a command-line os ... i hate the time it takes to load up the gui for widoze ... also it readds and writes from disk much quicker ... love it ... my second fav is devided between windoze 98 se ... and windows xp ... i would say dos ... but it's just a watered down version of unix...
Most of my experience is in windows and Win98SE isnt bad...
i like Win2K, its pretty good compared to previous windows.
Linux Mandrake is good, its user friendly and a good way to learn linux.
Red Hat isnt bad at all, my friend ran a very stable server from it.
Ive heard good stuff about BSD
I thought DOS came out before unix?,
or it could be that medicine im on right now:confused:

hmm me says for X86 I am a
Linux Debian person myself usually run Gnome if I wan't graphics
As a 2nd choise being a gaming person I like win XP (so far)
but I am sure as with all windows versions there is something hiding in it that will kick me when I least expect it
3rd... Are we only talking x86??
AS-400
Propritary, never had a virus writen for it (publicized), secure as hell, never been cracked (again publicized), speedy, did I mention secure?
Well at least from a business standpoint.
I definitely prefer Linux. I've run several versions of RedHat, some Caldera, and currently have SuSE 7.2
Through it all, I have to maintain Win 98SE on the wifey's computer, and have an ME box for games that has caused me no problems at all.
I'm also stuck with Windows for work, and prefer Win2k over NT4, as long as I've enough memory on the machine.
I've also successfuly run apache webserver on a 98 box, with no problems or breakins.
