As I sat here staring at my faithful laptop, I suddenly started thinking...What would I do without a computer? Or without a TV? Or without any form of electronic entertainment? I think I'd just throw darts at the wall and wander around my neighborhood thinking about doing illegal stuff that'd get my in trouble with the cops.
And so my question for everyone is...What would you do without any electronic entertainment such as computer, TV, game console?
Actually, when I first graduated from university I had no luxuries like computers (yes I have a few now), tvs (and a few of those as well), etc. I spent most of my time reading lots of fiction.
I've actually started to consider getting rid of the TVs, mostly because there is limited stuff on that I like and because I have lots of books to get through. =D . Nothing like an incentive, eh? I think given the events of last month, I was even more inclined to want to get rid of the 24-hour/day information load, especially from places like CNN where is was glamourized.
Since that time I've been going back to reading again and avoiding the news quite a bit.
I would be reading books. (Actually, I do that already for extra entertainment.) I'd also practice my martial arts a lot more (which would be a good thing. ) The craziest thing is that I would sit around programming. (I'd be writing my programs with a good old fashioned pencil and paper.) I know.... I did that a lot when I was in the Navy and out to sea with practically nothing else to do. Oh well. I don't have to do that any more.

I spend like every spare minute on the computer, and even some which aren't spare.... I mean, in the last 54 days, my computer has been off for like 2 days.... :p

I would definately read a more (if thats possible) and get back into and finish all my painting which has been lying around for about 6 months. Might go get me a girlfriend as well.
No computer or television, **** man. I would probably drive aimlessly around town looking for something to do. Like go to more concerts and I would probably go from smoking a couple of cigarettes a day to smoking 3 packs day.
a life without computers......I shudder to think. I would drink less smoke less, cuss less, scream less, go to church, write a book, sleep, eat, get to know my friends again (heh). Try to remember if I still have a girlfriend. Peace. digi

I have had that exact experience each time that I have moved house in the past... maybe a month while the computer and other furniture items arrive via trans-continental seaways...
But the last time I was in that situation... the library saved me again. Actually, this library had computers, so it wasn't quite the abstinence it was supposed to have been, but since it was open only during certain hours, I fell back on the books again. Books. Hmm. I love books. I devour books. Some people say (paraphrased) that I have [b]|\/|4|) |=|/\x0r R34d1ng $|<iLLz . I speed read, to a degree. Never took a class in it or anything, but when I'm in my reading zone... zoom. I actually have problems with not being able to find good books to read. When I was in middle-school (junior high), I went through the whole Dragonlance series within a few weeks, and actually got a little most-pages-read award during some sort of "reading week" doodad. Unfortunately my prize was a book that I had already bought. Go figure.
But yes, I would say books are the next best thing to la vida electrica.
Well I would still be in the us army infantry looking for bin ladins fricken a$$.. wishing I had a computer, or a laptop, or a palm pilot,or a fricken gameboy or something to that extent. lol.
I know this much I would be writeing more letters to freinds and family,
get this my family all have email, phones, and mail service and guess who has to write them or call them. WTF.
we all would be livin the hard time if there wasnt computers but maybe thats what the world needs. to get off your fricken lassy asses and go for a walk ride a bike put down the ho hos and the mountain dew and get some exercise. thats what the army talt me to do shoot, move and communicate. try it some time people you wont feel sick anymore. see ya later... time to hit the JYM

If you want to read some really good books, try anything by Raymond E. Feist. Start with "Magician: Apprentice" if you can. It's the first book in a series called "The Riftwar Saga" Sometimes it is combined with the second book called "Magician: Master" If it is it will just be called "Magician" I have read every book I could get my hands on by this author. His work is excellent.

I probably wouldn't do much different. I'd just spend more time on all my current projects that don't involve computers. As for TV, about the only things I ever watch are The Simpsons, and That 70's Show, so I wouldn't miss it.
For books, I'd recommend Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time Series. The first book in the series is called The Eye of the World.

Life without computers wouldn't be so hard. I'd still have my guitars, my air gun, and my obsession with motorbikes to keep me busy. Not to mention the obvious one...women...who would quite possibly look twice at me if it wasn't for my pallid complexion (the legacy of too many consecutive weeks in front of one CRT or another) and general unfitness (ditto).
Also, I'd probably start being able to interact normally with human beings again. Example conversation in a pub:
Stranger: "Hi. What's your name, by the way?"
Freon: "Freon, er, Maxint, er, Geoff - no, Geff."
Stranger: "Uh, ok. How are you?"
Freon: "Well, TMSUITK 2.2 has this bastard core leak bug that I just can't seem to track down - think it's when it allocates core for the window stack, but it seems to have something to do with drawing shadows on message box dialogs that are more than seventy-eight columns wide. And TE3 keeps seg faulting when it's trying to run the byte code compiler over sections of code that require dynamically loaded extensions. Hmm, and I have to update FLoF so I guess I'm pretty stressed - not to mention the -"

As for television...I don't have one of /those/ horrible things anyway... (he lied, knowing full well the entire time he had a black and white beast of a TV hooked up to the RF output of his BBC Model B...)

Well obviously I don't mean invent as such when I say that...that's been done. But wouldn't it be an interesting project to try to build one from separate logic gates? Just a simple 4-bit processor...it wouldn't be useful, but it would be cool. Or perhaps you could allow yourself to stretch to relatively simple integrated circuits like multiplexers and decoders, just for practicality's sake...implement the RAM using flip flops...and have buses made of bellwire...I/O in the form of a bunch of switches and some LEDs...
I don't have enough time to kill right now, but I'm sure this could be a fun project for someone who has! The idea appeals, anyway. The spirit is willing, but the mind is weak :-)

First off, I don't see that this post is that much more pointless than any of the other ones I've seen so far on this board. If you'd like to point me in the direction of one of those alternative, earth-shattering, striking posts you're comparing it to, I might well reconsider the pointlessness of this one.
Secondly, I don't see quite how you can refer to me as a 'usual idiot' since I've just signed up for this account and only been here a couple of days in a real, active sort of sense. I find that fairly offensive; if you weren't including me in that group, you should have explicitly excluded me. If you were including me as one of those aforementioned 'usual idiots' you're as stupid as you are childish.
And finally - funny how it's idiots that replied to it in a co-operative, fairly entertaining sense, while you felt the need to post two messages just to poke fun at us. You are precisely the kind of ******* I expected to meet on AntiOnline, according to my first impressions of you. Thank god your species is smaller in number than I anticipated, or I would have left here long ago.
There are some people who're using this forum primarily for entertainment, rather than to change the world. I have this funny feeling we're not the ones making a nuisance of ourselves or expecting miracles or barking up the wrong tree entirely.
Entertainment we seek, and entertainment and a few minutes diversion we got. Please try to be more tolerant of people who aren't armchair revolutionaries or elite hax0rz like your good self in future, if you'd like to do me an enormous favour.
Jeez, if you can't play nice at your age, just imagine what you're going to be like in ten years time...
