Just curious what was the first computer you ever owned and what was your biggest mistake you made with it that you look back and laugh at?
Well Ill tell you mine.. back in like 1995 I got my first computer and scraped it and put it back together and I put the 586 AMD 120+ Chip back in backwards it was funny I fried the chip etc.. Luckily I had another chip waiting JIC ROFL.. :eek: It was in all a funny scenario. We all make mistakes damnit.. now tell me about yours.
My first computer was an Apple Macintosh 512K. The first one I bought myself was an Apple Macintosh Quadra 650. I had a whopping 16MB of RAM, 500MB Hard drive all running at a whopping 33Mhz 68040 processor and just to add that much more flavour, I had a speedy little 14.4 modem and a "huge" 14 inch screen. At the time it was a speed demon of a work horse and I still have it active to date. I've lent it to a friend so he could get to know the Mac OS a bit. I'll get it back from him soon and probably turn it into a *nix box or an apply ftp server or something.
The worst mistake I made, and yet the funniest, was when I was repairing a clone for the first time. I didn't know about the "loose" wires and decided that the one that was loose should be connected. Man, what a smell! I learned the hard way and am lucky I didn't set the school on fire. ;)
An Apple ][e, was my first computer. If I recall correctly I was about 8 or 9 yrs old. And I could never remember the syntax to start up a game. (forgot what it was called) Was a robot game. Excellent graphics. :D
But I can't really remember too much about it.. Just about the tape drive and all. And that it was a really wierd yellow comp :P The only game I remember is purple meanies it was this old school game it was pretty leet. :cool:
I remember something my dad did to our first computer, I still pick on him about it today. It was a discontinued model PS/2 and my dad tried to upgrade the RAM, but he had no clue how, so instead of putting it in the right place, he stuck it in another slot and fired the entire computer, which lead to our second computer, which sucked. It was an IBM-compatible running DOS and a GUI called GEOS. We had that computer forever, still have it actually, it made a descent word processor.
I botched it one day because I shut it down improperly. But eventually I fugred out how to fix my mistake. And it started working again. I used to make all sorts of batch-files on that thing, because I wanted a realy computer and my parental units didn't think that it was necessary.
Then got a Celeron system for my freshman year of college and I wooped its ass. I reinstalled Win98 every oether weekend because I was trying to do so much crap. But, that is how I figured out much of my Windows knowledge. Then for about a month I stripped 98 off of it completely and used Linux. Which got me addicted to computer dorkery.
Now I have given my Gateway Celeron system to my Mom and Sis, and have a PowerBook G3 400 Mhz w/ 1 gig of RAM, running OS 9.2.1 and soon to have OS X 10.1. And I have a Pentium 120 Mhz 32MB running NetBSD.
I am addicted to computers. I keep trying to find older computers that people will donate to me so that I can install some form of *nix on them so that I can play.
I still do really stupid stuff, like working on files in /etc without having a backup. Or like deleting my rc.conf by accident (don't ask, I kicked myself, but I had to upgrade anyway, so everything worked out in the end.)

I was only in grade school when i had my first computer and it was a Tandy. I think it was a 386. My biggest mistakes were, like Prat said I took it apart an put the chip in backwards. And I learned that you can fry a motherboard by walking around on the carpet and touching the keylock. My computer didn'twork for all summer tell we finally got it fixed.

A TI thingy (forget the name) that was basicaly a keyboard that you hooked to a TV that used cartridges and tapes....very crappy but.......it had pac-man and pong!!!!!
My first computer was a Pentium 3 667 that I built myself. It's still pretty much the same, but in its life I have quadrupled the RAM, and added a DVD drive and a CD burner on SCSI. The only thing I regret doing to it was to beta test Windows ME on it. I felt like I was running a large (and VERY unstable) calculator.

The biggest mistake I made with it was when I pulled out the processor to look at it, and when I put it back in, I broke the little lever :) I tried just putting the chip in and sliding it to the side myself, but I had to get a whole new mobo..
The first computer I used was my dad's 386, running Windows 3.1. All I ever did on it was play JetFighter2 and write cheesy little stories in word.
My first PC was the original, IBM PC (the first they ever produced). Not sure what speed the processor was, but it was an Intel.
For $3005 this is what we got:

The first computer I ever worked with was an old Apple. Can't remember the model. The first computer in our household was my mom's C64... No disk drive, but we had a tape drive (that used audio tapes.) My first computer was a Packard Bell 486 50Mhz with 4M of RAM and a 420 M hard drive. I still have it and still use it. I now also own 4 PS/2 computers, an Apple ][c and several old 486's. Our main computer is a custom build I threw together (AMD K-6 450Mhz w/ 384 M RAM and an ATI Rage Fury Pro, a generic 12x DVD, a CD burner, CallWaiting modem, 30 Gig HD and an old Sound Blaster 32. It runs Mandrake 8.1. We're gonna upgrade the cpu soon (to cut some of the chop from playing DVD's).

My first computer is the one I still use. It has a 433 celeron. It originally came with a 4.3 gig hard drive but now has that and a 30 gig unit. It originall came with 32mb of Ram but now has 512mb. I also added an 8x CD burner, and an Ultra ATA 66 PCI hard drive controller card. I run both Windows 98 SE, and Mandrake Linux on it.

then theres a faze where i had like 4 machines.. i cant member what they were.. like ranging up to 200mmx.. man 200mmxers were solid.. member the Pro ?... oh baby.. hehe
then i decided to get a smick ass lappy.. yeah.. and told myself.. i would only have this one puta.. etc... well i tried to stay with it.. but now as i type on this puta i look around at the file server, the dedicated CS server, the firewall, and the games machine.. and think... i really need to get rid of these..
oh and btw.. what i regret about doing to the nintendo and xt... was getting rid of them.... man they were cool..

TRS-80/Tandy's were one of the first PC's I was working on, However the first PC I bought for myself was when I was 14/15. It was a Packard Bell, it was the most expensive piece I junk I ever bought, and to think it took me how long to suffer through delivering papers to purchase it. I now got a wonderful Dell Dimension 8100, 1.5 GHz Pentium 4 Processor, 1 GB Ram, GeForce3, running DSL... She's a bute...
Lets see. My first computer. I think that would have been the ATT, but I am not positive. That may have been the second or third. I remember it was in 79 or 80 that we got it though. I know that our first "hard drive" was a 5 MB drive with a 5 MB removibal optical drive. It cost us almost 10,000 USD for the drive and we had to drive about 700 miles to get it.
The stupidest thing I ever did with it. Well, I couldn't remember the dir command, so I looked it up on a sheet of paper that we had. Well, I wanted to get the list of games that my dad and I had programmed on the disk. The command I found was something like cf0g1a3, or something like that. Anyway, the command was actually the format command, but my dad had done something to rename it, so we wouldn't accidently format a disk. Well, obviously I lost everything on that disk. I was only 5 or 6 at the time though, and I don't think my dad ever did find out about that one. He accidently set a magnet on top of that disk before he found out that I had erased it.

I rememeber playing the Winter Games using the old black square Atari joysticks. You had to move the joystick left to right pretty fast in the skiing games. Left many a blister on mt palm. :2pick:
Hrmm.. My VIC 20 turned yellow.. My father spent soo much on it was crazy. Then I got the 8 bit Nintendo and destroyed commadore for every one in my house.. My father was too cheap to buy a monitor so we used the TV for a/v.. but those old commadore monitors were so cool for systems like PSX etc.. I bought had like 4 of them.. People used to throw them out all the time.. and they have better res then tv's so it was a good option.:D They were something that commadore actually made good.
My parents bought me a Sinclair ZX 81 with a whopping 1mb of ram, it plugged in to the telly... the most exciting thing i got it to do was a program to work out square roots... lol things have moved on a bit now though i have a tynan dual athlon motherboard with two 1.2ghz processors and a gig of ram.
I still have it somewhere with my Amiga A500 and an old DX2 66, I always wanted a BBC B as Elite was much better on that

Ok truely my first computer was a sweet ass commodore 64/128 that was loaded. (I loved the game taledega) it was tight.
But that was when I was really young.. My first real computer that got me started in what i do today was a beautiful Packard Bell Legend 50CD. Gawd I loved my packard bell.. It was 50 mhz 4mb of ram and 320mb of hard drive 15" svga monitor that could go up to 800x600x256. When i got it it was running windows 3.11 for workgroups. That was k00l. Anyways I logged on BBS's all the time. California Prime Line. Etc. Some other big ones.. and this totally awesome "The learning Place" running pc board.
Anyways TO back track a wee bit. I grew up with like lil money.. My grandma bought the packard bell so i could goto an ON-LINE school. (I am geek i got beat up in jr high) The online school was Choice 2000 ON-LINE school!. This school back in like 1995 was purely a worldgroup bbs runnin like a twenty line rotary. So n e ways.. a couple years later it switched to the internet so now it is telnet based. When that happened. I got internet access.. Suddenly my life changed.. I am GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKK!!!!!! (BTW the movie hackers came out and further fueled my fire) next thing you know i was doing the whole downloading password files and decripting them.. Hahaha! (which I learned of my first linux/unix shell account.)
My packard bell is now in many pieces.. I took it apart...

After getting everything set up and running,I promptly formatted drive C :dunce: of which I should have known better.....hmmmm.....live and learn.
It was a great machine though and was used every day by the current owners until last year when it finally died
Hmm, I remember playing with an apple ][e and a 286 around the same time, but they weren't mine. I just had unlimited access to them. I never ruined either one, but my first hacking experience was on the 286. I figured out how to get past the DOS shell that started on boot and back to the command line (if I remember right, I just guessed the password. If I knew what I know now it would have been a lot easier, but hey, I was a kid and didn't even know DOS). From there I taught myself DOS and found a nice collection of naked women in *.gif format the guy had been keeping on his harddrive. :D He found out somehow, but didn't know exactly what I had done, just that I had seen the pictures. I think I forgot to re - attrib +h the files.
My own actual first computer was a Pentium 90Mhz. I still have it. It's running Linux. :)
