I think that Slackware is about as small as you can get, for a while i had a bare-bones installation of it running on an old 486 with a 500ish meg drive with space to spare
hey here is a supper supper supper small linux distro
its called linux on a floppy and its http://www.ecks.org/projects/loaf/
Slackware is a good choice, they even have a Distro called ZipSlack that can be run from a zip disk if the Linux n a floppy thing doesn't work out for you.
either buy a cheapskates copy of a *nix distro or get a friend with a cd burner to do ya a copy, I wouldn't try downloading a full (or stipped down) distro unless you *really* want a limited set-up. 1 CD of a full distro will give you much, much more!
I'd also recommend finding someone with a high speed connection and a burner for updates.
Alternatley, some PC magazines have iso images on their free disks (in the UK they do on DVD mags).
Happy hunting!
Jamie.
There's a security based distro that fits on 2 floppies, sounds like what your after - availble here http://www.trinux.org/
Some faggot just gave me negative points because the trinux site is down - i'd *love* that cowardly ********** to come forward and name themselves - its obviously an active member too as i lost a good few points.
I don't mind getting negative points when i deserve them, but the trinux website is not my responsibility.
Another tiny, floppy disk size linux can be found at:
http://www.toms.net/rb/
We've used this one and been quite pleased with it.
If you are looking for more and/or other distributions go to http://www.linux.org/dist/english.html
Hope this helps.
I got negative anti point because my link didn't work, I dunno which link they meant cos there wasn't any feckin links!Quote:

You shouldnt try to download even a bare-bones version of linux off a slow modem like that. If you insist, ive heard of 'minix' which is a very small unix-like os. You can download it from ftp://ftp.cs.vu.nl/pub/minix/ .
If the cost of buying a cd is what your worried about you can have a friend with a fast connection (and a cd burner) goto http://www.linuxiso.org . These guys have the iso images of almost 2 dozen flavors!
Yeah, there's millions of Linux Distros all over the net, of varying sizes... Try www.freshmeat.net I think I found a huge list of 1/2 floppy based Linux distros that could be put onto a hard drive, then RPMs or tar.gz files downloaded to expand it...
Alternatively, get a version on a CD and do a custom install to only put on what you want!
