OK recently I lost all of the partitions and files on my hard drive. It was a 30 gig and had three NTFS partitions. My question is does anyone know of any good software that can recover all of the files or partitions? I was wondering if there are any free or cheap tools that i could find on the internet for download or in local stores.
BTW: I already tried Google and MSN and Yahoo to search for them.

I'm almost certain there are recovery tools out there somwhere, your best bet will be to put the hard disk into another computer so that its not being booted from (and so that the recovery program is not installed to that disk, overwriting some of your data). However, if the file allocation tables (or NTFS equivalent) are gone you might have a hard time trying to get data back. I guess the guaranteed way of doing it would be to download a Hex Editor or Disk Editor (Hex Workshop does this) and open the disk itself, recovering the data manually... but that'd take foreve and a day on a 30 GB drive.
In answer to your question, then, although I have come across recovery tools before, they usually work on individuial files (like Norton Undelete) and I doubt you'll get much useful info back after losing the partition tables, so your best bet would be to give up and start over...

Could you elaborate on how you lost your partitions? Have you tried booting with the windows 2000 cd (assuming it is w2k) Or setting the disk as a slave in another w2k machine?
There is a utility called NTRecover which will allow you to access damaged ntfs partitions over a serial connection to another machine - i believe they do a trial version that will give you read only access - should be enough to copy the data over to another pc, provided you've got the patience to wait for 30 odd gig to travel over a serial cable!

I have it setup as a primary slave. I have tried it with 2000 Prof and 98 also as the boot drive. The software i have tried is R-Tools it saw all my files and partitions but wouldn't let me recover anything over 64k in size, unless i pay 50 bucks and buy the full version.Quote:

I had it partitioned into 3 partitions, NT4, 2000 Prof, and files. Nt4 was 4.5Gig, 2000 Prof was 4.5gig and files were 19gig partitions. I had around 6-10 total gigs used up all together. I wanted to repartition it so i had 3, 5 gig partitions and a 15 gig partition.Quote:

First thing i did was ghost the harddrive to a spare 30Gig drive i had. I know that it copied all of my files because i watched it copy around 7 gigs of files. Then i disconnected it and set it to the side. I partitioned the original and went to copy from one drive to another. When i went to the backup drive there were no partitions or files. It showed it as one unknown partition. I ran the rtools recoverery and i could see my partitions and files but it wouldn't let me recover anything over 64k. Unless i get the full 50-100 dollars version.
Where can i find NTrecovery? Can i run it from a local hard disk with the 30 Gig setup up as the slave?

Having just looked at the site i see they have a remote recover tool for doing this sort of thing over a network (and no, i don't think you can do it over an ide chanel, it uses a nul modem cable or ethernet)

On Ghost I have ghost 2001. It worked every other time i have used it just not on this occasion.

a null- modem is a seriel cable. but a direct cable connection can be done with a parellel cable with much higher transfer speeds.
That does present a problem - are you sure the partition table is gone? Habe you looked at the drive through the likes of partition magic? It /might/ be possible to install an os into one of the partitions that doesn't contain your important data and access it through that - i've had success accessing ntfs partitions through linux when windows couldn't get at them - pretty ironic.
I have tried partition magic but it proved no results. I found some more recovery tools but i don't know if it will work. I have some full version software also but the problem is that it only works for FAT filesystems. :(

BTW: No operating systems can see any partitions or files. I just need recovery software. That finds it i just need one that recovers files of unlimited sizes. Or one that could restore my partition tables.

Unfortunately casper, any of the specialized tools i've came across that can recover partition tables and other low level stuff cost a fair bit of money, i think you'll have a hard job finding much free or shareware products that will work effectively - if you do hear of anything i'd like to know.
On that note, am i correct in thinking you work repairing/installing computers, i seem to remember you mentioning that (could be wrong though) - anyways, if you do - try getting your employer to stump up the cash :-) Disk commander from soft solutions is a good tool - only $800.
Try Rebooting your machine...then while its booting up press F8/Delete (I'm on a Win2kPro machine...With me you do this when the logo is up...not before, or you go into NetBIOS where you edit everything). But when you press it it'll move you to a screen and ask you if you want to load up from the "last origional safe settings" (or something of that effect). Try that...if nothing works, simple shutoff the machine without saving anything...Goodluck on your quest though.
This also happened to me recently...I only lost one drive though - my W: ...(Writeable for my burner). This actually happened two days ago. And I wasn't bothered to do anything about it (heh...). But I'm thinking if I just get myself a copy of Partition-Magic from a friend or something I might be able to make another one...

BIOS wont do anything. It sees the drive and periphials and lets you set them but it won let you do anything to them. Except some will let you do a low level format.

The DOS fdisk will be able to recover it... Most probably the lost space will be in NonDOS Partitions, i had the same problem and i deleted and recreated those partitions.
i tried that on the origional copy of the hrd drive and it didnt work. I think that the only way that i am going to get my files back is to give up and pay for a full copy of a recovery tool

Hey man why dont you try searching for freewares and then Utilities in Windows...
I have been but the only ones that I can find only show the files and partitions, and they will only let you recover files 64Kb or lower. I can probably buy one for 50 but i would rather find a freeware if i can. I have searched Yahoo, Google, MSN but still no luck. Oh yea and also webcrawler.Quote:
