Antipoint Earners

I've noticed that a few of the Top 15 Antipoint earners have a bit of a grudge against people takeing their spot.

I shouldn't recieve negative points just for beating you for your place. How you recieved as many positive points as you have is beyond my reasoning. It appears that a few of you have a grudge against the majority of my post. No big deal. You may or may not agree with what I have to say but I think this rateing system would be much improved if people actually started giveing out points and not just the negative ones. I am curious as to why some of you disapprove of posting links from other sites. I know it's their information therefore I provide the link for users to know where I got the information. It could be because I recieve compliments on post such as those and for some reason it seems to irritate a few of you..

Why is that?

Is there something wrong with provideing USEFUL information instead of takeing up space with threads like "A day in the life of oblio", ignorant polls, and many many more threads like that. I at least make an attempt to help people when I can and provide AO with news and other information.. and yet I continue to recive flames, complaints, negative points, etc.

I have to disagree with you Terr. You have several good post and you deserved those points. You and the other higher level AP earners dont have that problem because you dont have AP wars and abuse the system like some of the other users. Mainly the middle to lower proportion of the top 15 AP earners but not all of them. Just a few..

The anti point system are definitely being abused. I got negative points for posting on the computer history thread. And for what? did I say anything wrong or flame anybody?
And this is not from any junior member.

That's a good example Focmaester.. I recieve a number of negative points for no apparent reason. Even on some of my better post and I know it's not from any junior member or regular member.. it's usually the senior members. I'll give you points for that Focmaester when I can.. I've given out too many today. ;)

I got negative points in the disabling telnet thread ... with a message that said "Great post!" or some such ... clearly, not a negative point comment. <sigh> Oh, well ... I guess I'll have to make up for that.

Same here, I received some weird negative antipoint too - I stopped getting them as soon as I dropped out of the top15 antipoint-list. One was signed 'FreeOn' - I asked him, but he didn't give them to me.

The same happened to me in the thread "UNIX is short for what?". Just because I liked the topic and said "nice work" I got negative antipoints.

I don't know about that.. But I would give the antipoints to the thread i disliked and maybe I would send a message to them who liked the thread and try to convince them about that they are wrong and that the main post is bad, bad.

But ofcourse if someone did it that way he or she would not remain unknown anymore.. It's to easy to give negative antipoints when people are afraid of be honest and avoid state their names.

I would like to have a reply function to all antipoints. Then the giver or taker can remain anonymous! But the person who has got the antipoints can still defend them self without to continue post the "abuse" information in the thread.

maybe this helps i put my nick with every positive and negative points so people can see who dit it:) maybe it's better if you just can see the nick if u got points from someone once i helped someone out with someting(yeah i do that to ;)) i got a antipoint from someone who said he was helping the man first how ugly can u make it :)

Yes, the AntiPoints system is abused. I've tried fighting that battle before. I get negative points for petty things all the time, as I'm sure most of the people here do. There have been arguments and suggestions to change the system, and even suggestions to abolish it. Most people seem to think the AntiPoint system is in need of improvement. However, JP seems to be standing his ground on this one, and is doing it his own way. Obviously he knows something about the system that we don't, or he has different visions for it than most of us do. Either way, the AntiPoint system seems to be here to stay, so we might as well get used to it.

Even as abused as this system is, I think people are overreacting to it. If you think about it, why does it matter if you have 99 points or 100 points? What all is on the line? A second green dot next to your profile, that's all. It's really no big deal. I mean, I've had 2 of those little dots before (a couple times), but I have gotten petty points that took me right back down to one. I've been sitting on 97 points for a while now. Just one contribution of positive points could take me back up and over the 100 mark, but for what? A second green dot? That's hardly worth fussing over. If somebody gives you positive points, just be happy that they noticed you. If they give you negative points, try to figure out why. If they were petty, just let it go. It's not worth fighting over, as it will just lead to more negative points for you. I've had to learn that lesson the hard way, too. Negative points are a fact of the system, just as positive points are. Both are inevitable. The best thing to do is to just get used to it.

Now a real hacker would know how to give
himself as many points as he wanted.

Yeah, I gave seb-g some negative 400 antipoints, but I didn't touch my own net value. (I gave myself negatives and positives while trying it out)

But anyone who wants to believe I used nefarious means can think so if it makes them feel better :D

Fortunately JP listened and went and patched it.

I have this weird feeling Debris has a positive senior member acount in his pocket and has been playing nice guy with it and now has started to hand out neg points because he knows he can.

I got some negative antipoints from someone with the comment "Send me anti-pointz (disapprovez, red buttonz), because if you don't do this i will send you anti-points (disapprovez, red buttonz) for ever. Merry Christmas OhOhOh." I have no idea who this is, has anyone got this also?

I had the same comment a while agoo... most of the senior members recieved this kind of AO - Points and we assumed it was Sebastos12.

Perhaps that conclusion was wrong.

I got attempted ones like that one time too. I don't know who it is, but I have some ideas. It's not big deal though. Every forum has its losers with no purpose but to [attempt to] make everybody's life miserable. He's probably gotten bored with it, and left by now.

Unless the antipoints system has some changes to it as follows, I won't necessarily believe a negative/positive post unless I know the people enough (which is kind of hard on the net):

1: make the post auto-assign the name of whoever's doing it, regardless.
2: make the comment field optional
3: add in a javascript yes/no so that when someone posts either positive or negative, it asks them if they're sure. This is mainly for the negative posts because then it's another step before they shove - points down the line. It might help, or might not.

Anonymous posting is something that's just not conducive to the idea of the points system. And anyone who has to sign someone else's name because they think it's funny is just as bad. If the name is autosigned, it puts a level of honesty on the floor and people might be a little more careful with their postings.

Question: why is it people don't mind signing positive points (most of the time) but 9.99 out of 10 times, they won't sign a name (or even a comment) when assigning negative points?

Disclaimer: this is just my opinion and probably has already been said before.

That's a hell of a good idea, Vorlin. Hopefully this'll be implimented.

1: I think a problem with auto assigning names is that there might be more of a revenge factor. Suppose Person A gives negative antipoints to Person B. Person B might lash back, and Person A will be down just because he told the guy what he thought. Person A is unhappy with this and lashed back. Person B does likewise and now we've got ourselves an antipoint war.

A better idea might be to make an assign-name button optional, and when it's used an antipoint might carry more sting.

2: Not just optional. Mandatory. Definitely mandatory. If I get points I want to know why.

3. I definitely agree. Good idea.

I don't think the anti-point system is so bad. I actually think it is making people think before they post pissed off angry messages. I'll admit it caught me a few times. Sometimes I'll be ready to start cursing at someone like crazy but instead I end up explaining why I disagree and it usually ends up resulting in postive anti-points.

Of course I've gotten a few negatives that I didn't think were fair, but If you are a good AO Citizen it seems that the positives outweigh the negatives.

BTW, where can i see the top anti-point earners? It used to be on the front page but I don't see it anymore. I remember I used to be number 14 or 15. Wondering where I'm at now.

I think JP took it down because somebody was going around targeting the top antipoint earners...I guess jealousy was a factor or something.

Maybe if users couldn't give out negative antipoints, only postive points, this wouldn't be so much of a problem? Just a suggestion.

Some people around here NEED negative points.
But unfortunately the ones that give anon neg points are the ones who don't really post anything of use. oh well.

I don't really think we need negative points. If you see a user with no postive points you can just take that to mean that they don't really contribute much positive feedback. Negative points allow poeple to abuse the system more. Another possibility, as someone else already suggested, is to show a user's positive and negative points. This would be more informative than just showing one value.

But I do agree that poeple should not be allowed to give negative points without giving a reason.
