AVP (Kaspersky) is very good and they have a free evaluation versions
AVP......
you can scan yourself for viruses online from norton for free but it's one of those if they find it they won't fix it but it's a good detector
I personally don't even use a virusscan becuase anti viruses are just ram hogs. But if you really want to get one get a good one. Norton is fairly good. If your really cheap you could find a "FREE" norton antivirus on some sites.
Good Huntin
I would sujjest norton....

Personally I use norton at home. On my networks (work) I prefer norton's enterprise edition it has a killer interface, and allows for good control. It's nice to be able to push updates and lock users from fighting off the system with no real trouble. There are other suites out there that do the same. Trend micro makes some good products as well, I've run Trend scanmail for exchange quite successfully and found that protection at the email gateway almost irradicates any threat (we still keep AV at desktop though). Really, none of this answers your question for a simple home solution. I figure someone else might pop in this post and get some info from it. I used to run a shareware program by Shark bbs called thunderbyte (speaking of memory hogs xpa-) it was a small, light package, and ran unnoticeable. unfortunately I think they got bought out and the product is no more.
norton is pretty easy to find, as is crackafee (mcafee) trend can be hit at www.trendmicro.com
Listen to Alexzel.
First make a hunt for old threads (they are not of topic) here at AO. Or use one of the supplied links or do your own search with www.google.com.
Thanx for the help.
Hi there,
I've never had a problem with Norton AntiVirus until the 2007 came out.
It hogs your system's resources and slow down your entire computing experience.
Very disappointing, as I have always used Norton products in the past.
Some of their earlier products were more user friendly.

Hope this helps.

Oh come on...this topic have been covered Many times! Just do a search...and read.
Norton is actually fairly poor in detection rate. Somewhere around 94%. Even McAfee is better than that. Kapersky has the highest detection rate in the 2 studies I've seen, 99%.

I use Avast Anti-virus. Its a good freeware one. I suggest trying that one it. I beleive i got it in AO's downloads section but if not here is the link.

Hey secure_101, you might want to look at the date on the post before replying to it.The last post on this thread was over four years ago :o
Cheers,

EDIT: As a consequence of the missing flashy date thing, most long term members ended up posting as well. I got tipped off when I saw Alexzel's name on one of the posts. She hasn't posted in bloody ages :D.
squall75, I suggest using ClamWin it's free(GNU, will forever be free) and doesn't hog up your resources like most anti viruses do. You can update and download definitions for free also.
http://www.clamwin.com/
Well, since this discussion has started again up anyway, I'd recommend AVG free if you want a free one, NOD32 if you're ready to pay. ClamAV is good, but it doesn't have a resident guard, which IMHO, is a must for any antivirus. NOD32, I'd highly recommend, because it's fast, has a tiny footprint and fantastic detection rates.
Cheers,

norton is the anti-christ
do you know how many computers we get in every day with problems like "i can not install this program" "i can not send attachments through my computer in email" "my computer is so slow, what is wrong"?
Half the time norton is doing more harm then good because it bogs down the system. And it does not catch everything... although there virus library is nice and the individual virus removal tools rock
its not free but it is awesome
trend micro - pc cillin
its light weight, its fast, it rocks
yes, bestbuy burns into your brain that trend micro rocks but i use it on all my comps and i enjoy it. its nice.
The link was in my post above! :DQuote:

Actually I agree with hexadecimal. Trend Micro Internet Suite 2006 and now 2007 are all that you would need, other then the above aforementioned...tried both AVG and Avast and of the two if you go the free route I would give Avast the thumbs up..
On this PC I have Trend Micro for anti spyware, which is very good. I imagine their anti virus product is equally useful, if you're prepared to look at products that aren't free.
The best antivirus is...common sense. I quit running AV apps since I
started wiping off everybody's butt who's already infected. Keep your
pants on and you won't need antivirus. The best AV in the world won't
cover you if you're an id10t.
Don't want computer virii? Use your head...the one on your shoulders. Better yet, make friends with a doctor...
That might have held true once, but nowadays you either severely restrict your internet activities and enjoyment, or you protect your system. Plus, my PCs for instance have more than just myself using them and I cannot guarantee the common sense of other users.
I've always thought that the best AV was common sense...
I am a fan of AVG...its free, easy to use and seems to catch just about everything. Much better than any of the Norton or McAfee crap.
I have in installed on a number of work machines and even suggested it to people both in and outside the company. It updates every day and doesn't cost a dime. However, if your just an trusting idiot then no AV will save you.
Anyone know if the AVG anti-spam is any good? Or perhaps what the best anti-spam is...either free or not...but preferably free.
AVG Anti Spam ?!? What's that?
I noticed that after I posted it. I guess i should start reading the whole post before posting things. :-)Quote:

AVG do anti spyware as well? It's probably a good program, that makes more sense than anti spam! I wish AVG would come up with an anti spam program, especially at the moment, it seems to be worse than ever.
Trend Micro do an anti spyware program which is very good too.
Whatever antivirus solution you end up picking. Take a moment to pick through all of its options. Sometimes the level of detail they go to can slow down your system or your connection. This can be easily fixed by disabling some of the features, especially heuristics scanning. If you do end up disabling anything, make sure to schedule a routine full system scan.
and remember... antivirus isn't a guaranteed fix to anything. always always always make backups.
Very good advice. And in the case of Norton Anti Virus, fixing the problems caused by the AV software itself :(
Reminds me of those "George's tickets" where a user asked if IT could install her "Anti Norton Virus".
And never ever trust ANY one scan 100%. Always get another opinion, or better still, 2.
Personally I think this subject has been beaten to death on every forum ever created. Everyone prefers their own. There are also tests that rate which one is "better".
Yeah, norton's a pain. I used to prefer it, but I've slowly developed a hatred of it.
For a home user, AVG free does all you need. Or screw installing a ram-hogging AV, just hit Trend Micro Housecall (housecall.trendmicro.com) every so often to do a free online scan. Unlike other free scans, it will also attempt to clean what it finds.
Or the free online Pandascan. The most thorough I know of.
The problem with this, is if you do an online scan and it does find "stuff", well how long has this "stuff" been on your PC, or how long has it been zombied...so that everyone else around suffers...if you want to just use online scans then you have already lost the battle, the trick is stopping them at the door.Quote:

Trend has a nice feature which will allow the user to do an emergancy disconnect from the internet when it detects the usual driveby browser hijacks, (prolly shouldn't be surfing to that site, but you know users...:halo: )so regardless of the "bloat" (with the exception of Norton...sorry IMHO three thumbs down for their software):Dat least having something to negate intrusion or infection is better as it is proactive not reactive...;)
Greeting's
Here is a great solution to your problem for free..
Get free version of :
1. Adaware
2. Spy-Bot (immunize feature is a good option)
3. Spywareblaster
4. A squared
USE ONLINE VIRUS scanner(s) ONCE A WEEK
safety.live.com
housecall.trendmicro.com
patch windows, Get a firewall (paid is a better option here, configure it well)
Use Opera (people might say firefox.. even that is good .. IE is good too just configure it..) AND YOU ARE DONE (FOR MOST OF WHATS WRONG OUT THERE)
In fact I think the free version of Adaware is better than the professional version which I got, and then found it "hung" during scans. I'd more or less agree with the list above, except A squared drove me round the twist when I had it installed with its constant scanning and harrassing me about stuff I'd told it to ignore.
I'd also say real time protection is worth quite a lot - it's OK doing online scans but I like being able to scan individual files if I'm not sure about them, or be told that something I've downloaded or been sent is actually a virus. Yes, virus protection uses resources but nowadays most PCs have the resources to spare.
In fact I just downloaded and installed it on 3 PCs and it so far I like it. Given that I've got two PCs where the pro version of Ad Aware now seems to hang during a scan, I hope it will prove a useful replacement.Quote:
