You mean you wasted money seeing that? Tell me your friend had an extra ticket or something.....anything........
P.S. sorry but, you asked..........
hackers.... i diddent see any hackes in that movie....jsut glorified script kiddy types
Angelina Joly in her best movie....
The movie rocks if you don't look at all the discrepancies...
The music is very good...
I love it...
i liked the fact that they used at least some real hacking technuqes but didn't like that they made us look like a buch of glorified ravers
Discount the imaging of what the "hacker" sees on the screen and it was very true to what a cracker does (reference to the documentation needed, social engineering, dumpster diving ...etc).
I am something of a geek and collect movies that I think make a good attempt at portraying the industry. Antitrust, Wargames, Hackers, might pickup the cable movie about Gates and Jobs.
Cheers,
-D
You see, Korpdeath, I did ask - so feel free to voice your opinion.
And just so you know my vote is in for "every day" ;)

1: you do not hack through phone booths with fancy laptops.
2: you do not hack through phone booths with fancy laptops with 5 of your friends doing the same thing in the same phone booth row.
3: you do not have graphical filesystems like you see in Hackers or Jurassic Park (..."I know unix"...yeah right).
Overall, it's an "ok" movie worth watching just to see 1 second of AJ's naked cleavage bouncing around, but for technical expertise, you've got to be joking. I hate the way they make technology look like. It is NOT as glorified or good-looking as they portray it.
Hackers the movie is the direct cause of so many teenagers taking up hacking.
The movie was the shyt. I thought it was badass cause i had never seen a movie about computer hackers. hell all i had seen was telnet and tellix. I thought it was wierd that these guys had graphics. But You have to relise this is not a technical movie. A movie about rebellion, and fighting the system.:) I gave it a 8
All very good points. Personally, I liked it for the music, and it also gave a true portrayal of manuals and dumpster diving (as dspiedel said), plus I also like the fact that it gives an idea of the penalties for getting busted. Keep 'em coming!
SSJVegeta-Sei
Yeah... The manuals were perfect.... I wish I could get my handsa on some rainbow books :)
I liked the movie because it shows how the public portrays hackers.. (Even though if it isnt true)
I thought the movie was pretty good. Decent concept, pretty good acting, etc. The plot wasn't great, and the kung-fu style hacking technique was kinda stupid. I loved the fact that everyone seemed to have a virus that would infect the gibson though. And also how easy it was to get in when they all attacked, even though you know the GOD password would have been changed.
You have never seen a movie about hackers? What about War Games (dated but decent), Sneakers (gotta love social engineers), and Swordfish (sorry, but I had to say it). There are others, but those 3 also revolve around the hackers.
Oh yeah, if you don't live in the US, there is always Takedown. Gotta love a corrupt movie bassed on the misguided information from 2 people involved in the illegal capture of Kevin Mitnick. I haven't seen it, but I have heard it was very bad.
Yeah i was going to mention the soundtrack on it, orbital and prodigy i like ;) + some others.
Overall for a film i thought the story was quite good and the acting by Jonny Lee Miller was solid enough, Angelina Jolie well she's a babe...
But yeah some of the scenes were a bit glorifed over the top *As if* style like the global t.v message at the end, but i do have a mate that takes his laptop from place to place when him and a few people are tinkering about with things...
i'd watch it again
what are peoples thoughts on the flick swordfish ? aye or nay ?
good music, good cast (mmm...angelina jolie....), bad acting, even worse tech know-how....did anyone else notice that they were hacking with Macs? btw, ac1dsp3ctrum, I have those rainbow books on my computer if you want them. Send me a PM...

Well it did bring a bad publicity to real hackers and hacking itself. I guess American and European hacking school might differ. When in America a typical stereotype of a hacker is a geek teenager that is taking his anger on people using his computer, whereas european standard for a hacker is a man in his 30 - long hair, hadn't washed, eaten a home meal, real sex for some time! ;-) If i saw this movie bofore I started wondering bout computers and hackin' I would've found it great, but since i saw it long time after-nah! The concept of the movie sucks, although the soundtrack is good, the action is not bad, if you close your eyes on all those cheap hacker wannabe effects- As far as i understand the movies is set in early 90? Where was I when thay made THOSE kinds of computers??? ;)
#bookz and #bookwarez on Undernet are also good places to get books
The only thing good about that movie was:
Angelina Joly
Damnn she fine!
opsec
Well, well.. Apple everywhere. At least you may wonder from whom some of movies funds came.
About the technical part, I imagine some of the phreaking stuff might have worked some day. At least, the "telegraphic way of dialing" used to work here, many years ago. Now everywhere tone is used, instead of pulses.. The operating systems used in these so-called hacker movies are quite interesting.. I wonder if they were all written in flash. :p . And I also wonder if you have noticed how fast they can type, and why the heck they don't use space key?!
But forgetting the technical part, there's Angelina. Ah, and a plot, but I can't remember where it was... damn, I can't remember the movie properly..
I do have to say that it encouraged kids to become l33t and say w00t! I remember that everyone in my high school wanted to download viruses and tones for payphones after that to "Hack the Planet"
I got a lot of people coming to me asking how to be l33t and how to find the l0pht to hack peoples hotmail.
the movie couldnt be more fake, sure they do some stuff that would be done in real life, but it more of a comedy then a cyber movie. and as for angela jolie, if i wanna see her naked i just pop in gia( never heard of the movie until my ex-girl rented it) it shows everything, score!over all though i just watch it just to get a good laugh.
" yes this is Mr.eddie veder from accounting....." LMAO .
Honestly,
I thought that the movie was ok, it really glorified hackers in a way that made sense to normal ignorant people. I guess what im trying to say is that some of the movie was blown out of proportion (like the internet being a world full of circuit boards and visual displays of servers), and that "non-internet" folks have an expectancy of hackers doing stuff like that....(like making someones records disappear//////Black or White hat i think no-ones that morbid.......... ) this movie is definitely five material..
lots of senior members have opinions on this movie. i agree with Vorlin about some of the discrepancies between the movie and the reality. they were trying to make it look futuristic and glorify hacking as an artform carried on by enlightened subculture teenagers. for most bystanders the technique probably worked, but some of us think it's a total fraud.
my biggest problem with the movie was not that the the writers didn't know Unix from a box of cracker jacks--no, my problem is that the movie offered false hope to aspiring code-monkeys that one day they may meet a chick who looks like Angelina Jolie. trust me, i've worked at Intel and i've been an engineering student for some time--there's no (or at the very least a distinct minority of) female computer enthusiasts that look like Angelina Jolie. oh, but if only there were...
The movie Hackers was just as "Hacker" as the movie Antitrust. I guess you can't expect movie writers to be able to fully express a lot of the real ways in which they operate. If you haven't seen Antitrust, it is definetly one to dl, don't waste the $ renting it.
On a more positive note, I like seeing watching hacker movies a lot more than romances.
I must say that I love the movie. I dont literaly watch it everyday but I try as much as possable. True it's not accurate, but that is because it's Hollywood and they did need to "hollywoodize" it so that it could bring in some money. That's show biz folks.
One of my favorite movies on the subject though. Right up there with War Games and Operation Takedown (to name a couple). :)
Hehe, I loved the movie considering most of it was filmed in my school (Stuyvesant High School) =]
I wonder who and when will make a movie after the book The Heretic by Jason K. Chapman. A wonderfull cyber thriller.
i liked it, however it made the game look so easy. the game of hacking anyway. for another, it completly exagerrated everything. I guess it was there for the public eye. Anyone else notice how they would type like 6 things and crack something. Amazing... not even *real* hacking. It should have been called "Crackers" if anything.
Funny fact, Johnny Miller (dade) and angelina Jolie (Kate) were actually married in real life.
Another fact, my sisters first and last name were in that movie, when lord nikon was dj'ing - Lisa Blair :)
its old, unrealistic and pretty boring i thought... some of my mates loved it but nah its not for me....
I though the movie was... ummm... alright. They were off on a few things though. In the movie one of the kids uses whitebox tones in what was supposed to be a redbox. In the scene where that dade guy breaks into the TV station he talks to that girl through a IRC and he doesn't even scan, netsend, or connect to her PC and then he gets all excited over a lame DoS attack. I think the payphone thing was outdated even back in those days.
Other things I've noticed about the movie... Lots of transexuals in it, nearly all PCs are macintosh, everyone peck types, they think guys with cameras and a redbox are 'l33t', they stole the mentor's manifesto, & everyone walks in & out of jail really fast.
I thought it was ok but if you wanna really dumb movie to laugh at then checkout ghost in the machine... That movie was brainless when it comes to electronics in general...
