I just read this article here .
IMO this is ridiculous.
What next, a 30 day waiting period before you can buy a computer while a backround check is being done on you? Could you be refused a computer if you have a few speeding or parking tickets in a few months?
Or maybe a licence will be required to own a computer (which I'm surprised hasn't come in already as governments never miss an opportunity to relieve us of our hard earned cash).
What do all you computer users out there think of this?
The thing that I don't get is why they had a problem sereling it to a handgun store owner...how is it more dangerous with him than with anyone else?
This would make a great Sci-Fi novel.
They could profile "hackers", refuse to sell
hard drives to teenagers etc.

This happened about 15 miles from where I live...and I didn't think this was going to become national news.
Just goes to show people are paranoid.
i heard about this the other day. apparently dell just messed up. they used the excuse that it seemed like it might be a terrorist, but what "secret terrorist" would have a name so suspicious? not to mention that dell did not even attempt a back ground check or investigation, or contact to say that the order has been denied. this is really bad publicity on dells part. every pro-gun being in the country is upset with them about this. it was just plain prejudice. but i suppose all the anti-gun people will be bying dells now.

i understand how it could happen. many companys are being indited for violating export restrictions. i know one of the big computer mfgs was amoung them, it may have been dell, i don't recall.
its a good thing we have people like weigand to balanse these checks companys are putting into place or else profiling would be the result.

Hah...what a bunch of BS. Dell is really pulling the wrong string on this one. I don't even understand what Dell's intent was by doing this besides making an ass out of themselves? Do they link handguns to hackers now? I swear, "because of the Sept. 11 events..." my ass. What do handguns and laptops have to do with the Jihad - if crashing two planes into twin towers was the Jihad at all (for most Muslims agree that that was not Jihad).
Honestly, the guy just wanted a laptop,...background checks shouldn't be necissary,...Now what I'm praying is if Gateway doesn't sink into this - for they are quite big on shipping PC's and not upfront "point-and-choose" buying. But as the man said,...he could have easily walked into BestBuy and picked one up in under 20 min. If I were him I'd give Dell hell from now on.

That was an interesting article. It doesn't suprise me though. I guess Dell and many others are just glory seekers, that or trying to up their sales in some way.

That's just plain crazy. The man can't have a computer if he owns a gun shop? Wtf, what other dumb things are they going to do after the Sep. 11 ordeal. This has been milked way too much. All the guy wanted was a damn laptop. He has a gun so he must be a cracker lmao. I'm glad he didn't take any **** from dell so that this doesn't become a precident.
Maybe they are "gunning" for a large computer sale for the HGI.
It's yet another example of big companies "trying" to be responsible after 9/11. Kinda reminds of the stupidity of Las Vegas not allowing Tyson to fight there. ( they wanted to show some responsibility) They are freakin' fighters for god's sake, they get paid to beat on each other. How civilized can you require these guys to be????? I mean honestly.

This is just more of the corperate world attempting to say what is right and wrong for the populus. Dell used to be a decent company. But the more I hear anymore they are starting to act like AOL, MS and Gateway. Whats next? The thought control police? They should sell them and not worry about the use. As stated, if someone wants to do harm they can go steal a laptop or go buy one localy or at a swap meet with minimum interaction.
This is the beginning of what is to come. This may not be as intentional as what it is being amped up to be but, beware.... Using the 9-11 tragedy as mask of doing the "right thing" is about to unleash many more things of this nature upon the computer generation as well as the need to know subculture. It doesn't matter what they are, the question is what are we going to do??

Well, if I were a gun store owner and Dell refused to sell me a laptop because of what I own... I would say "Well, Mr./Ms./Mrs. Dell Representitive, I was going to buy a computer from you and tell the whole world about how wonderful you are, BUT... I guess I will just have the kid up the street build me one for LESS, and it will be better, and I will recommend that he start his own business, and...." you get where this is going...
