Since this is a security site, it may not be the kind of question you want to ask here.
Especially when your friend Google would probably give you some good clues. Try typing "pwl file" or so in Google.
Cheers,
BrainStop
Why not, whoever wants to learn should be helped.Quote:
Try www.happyhacker.org, Meinel practically has her whole book online.
Focmaester. . . acording to the title accross the top of this site. . . its ANTI Cracking. Am I right? Hmm. . . . Now why would someone want to crack a pwl file? Only 2 reasons. . .
#1. They were stupid enough to forget it
#2. They are trying to break someone elses password.
Now I doubt he forgot his password, so that leaves us with one option. And here at AO. . . we dont HELP hackers. . . we STOP them! ! !
Side Note: It was brought up to me in the IRC channel by chsh that some Admins. . . well most admins test their users passwords to make sure they are secure. I agree. . . but these Admins dont post on message boards asking how to do it! Now do they?
agreed, most people are prolly looking for a way around other peoples paswords.. and i think if someone was really looking because of admin problems....they would explain the situation a little bit better...
Wel perhaps then (if you are referring to THIS site) I should point him out to the archive section that is loaded with trojans/crackers and other kiddy suited tools.
You have a very good point Focmaester. . . I shall take this up with JP. See what I can do. We really dont need all these kiddie tools on a Security Site. Especially the Virus Section. :( Point taken. ;)
I'm sure he's looking to hurt
:3pow: kiddies
RogueSpy,
You act like you run the place. Do you remember the whole idea behind AO like six years ago. Do you realize that most of the stuff in the download section has been made technically useless since code was removed. We must first understand what is attacking us before we can defend against it.
Honestly, who cares if the guy wants to crack a PWL file. That means he is running Windows 98 or 95. He could just hit Escape to bypass the screen. Give me Negative Antipoints if you must, but this is JP's site, not yours. You have no partnership with him.
Please get off your high horse, pull the stick from your ass and walk like the rest of us do.

but is experience sometimes not the best teacher?Quote:

Like VanEck talked about (kinda) in this post sometimes by using the tools ourselves we can find out more about th attacks and how to stop them - kinda like stepping into the mind of a s|<ript |<iddie for a while (icky thought I know :() - you never now some |<iddie browsing the downloads section might stumble into the forums - read a lil - learn alot - and alter his ways to good :) or maybe I should just wake up and face reality ;)

edit ->oh and MM_IUH BrainStop is right this is an ANTI-hack0r site -_-
questions about things like cracking etc which you are looking to do which blatantly have no legit purpose will only get you flamed - if you want to know the answers to those sort of questions try the forums on here

I agree there, thats a must.

That still does not make it right to let us teach someone how to crack something. What is security all about? Protection. And if we teach a person that we are pretty sure will use the info we give to cause harm, then we are at fault.

I don't think negative antipoints should be given for speaking one's veiws, and I will not be giving you any negative AP's.

I may be setting myself up to be yelled at here....sorry Roguespy.
I myself have been trying to learn how to hack....not because I want to damage anyones system, but because I believe in the statement that "you have to know how to attack a system if you're going to be able to defend a system".
It makes sense, afterall..."Hackers know the weaknesses in your system. Shouldn't you?"
It is possible to learn how to hack without ever harming anyone, or breaking any laws...there are systems volunteered for that purpose...therefore, a question about hacking could be a perfectly legitimate one, not one with intentions of doing any harm to anyone.
I don't like script kiddies anymore than the next person...because they don't take the time to actually learn how to hack....they simply apply someone elses codes and methods without ever taking the time to understand them.
Good luck in your search for information MM_IUH, I hope it's for a legitimate reason.
Here is a way to LEARN all about PWL files. http://hackingtruths.box.sk/pwl.htm
Thanks,
DISLEX
We can go around and around about that Uraloony. All I am saying is Windows 95/98 does not really have a good password scheme for itself. That guy cracking the PWL is just as bad as me using LC3 on my users to see if they have good passwords and so I can get in their systems and fix them while they are on lunch.Quote:
I am torn on this issue....
On the one hand I don't like the idea of just giving hacker tools out to anyone who asks....thats how we get script kiddes (those who are too inexerpirenced to understand what they are doing)...
On the other the only way we are going to get good overall security is through Evolutionary methods...Surivial of the fitest...for too long certain companies and Operating Systems have been allowed to have inferior security standards (cough...MICROSUCK)....while others have been negelected by evil doers, and consquently also need better security (cough MAC)....
So I say let the kids have more tools, it will force the big boys to work harder, smarter, or face extinction!!
I agree with jcmcb, we can't have script kids runnin around with some of these scripts. My idea.. Why don't the script writers put a statement in the script that when someone runs it says
"If you learn this language then you can modify this script to use it."
Once I finish learing C++ (start for that matter) thats what I intend to do.
if u want to catch a witch, you better be one,
i mean if you want ot catch a hacker you better know the ins and outs,
let's help one another, as most of us regard AO as our home.
let's not be deceived by the media about the word hacker.
it depends on how u define it. as most the articles says that the hackers
invented the internet,(computer experts)
errrmm what if the person askin the question or who started this thread just wants to see if it works and he'll only use his own pwl file.. like i did.. i cracked my own pwl file, juz for the sake of learning and to make sure if it really works coz i know what the passwords are and if it doesnt show me the right one then it doesnt really work...
would that be considered a bad thing?
oh btw, i compiled the code on the link DISLEX posted and it worked. If you want a ready made .exe of it.. just pm me and ill send it via ZIP.. though if anyone would be against it, then just say so.. and this code only works for win95/98. ill notify you when i come up with something for WinME and WinXP. WinNT and Win2k uses SAM so i really dont have anything to do with it coz SAM Dump is already ready for d/l in l0pth crack, and i dont have the source code for that crack, atleast for this pwl crack i have the source code so i can basically modify it.

I would argue that this is not a bad thing at all mate. Like a rich man stealing from his own wallet, nothing is stopping him from doing so - no laws, no morals, no religion... I've done it to myself tons of times...crack my own password, infect myself with a backdoor, install keyloggers and send them to my own email address...
...All to test and figure out basically what the hell was going on. Tweaking my computer everywhich way, and literally to hell and back. Now obviously I would try late at night to pick up little AOL'ers or MSN'ers in chats and see if it would work on their computer...it did.
Luckly, I didn't end up sticking with downloading programs and relying solely on other people's work, but went into programming (mainly because those other damned programmers would be to slow :p), which I do now quite frequently - but not for malacious things. Right now my life is focued on actually attaining one, programming small phonebooks, and little tidbits every now-and-then.
But I'm [probably] one of the lucky ones, ...You never know with today's folks, with the online "hacker" (scriptidiot) community rising all over the place, who know's what'll happen to this new generation of elite warriors. Hopefully defacment of other clan's webpages will be only a megar attempt at gaining knowledge of how websites function and work and the weakness of CGI... but hey, some kids like that stuff... don't ask me.
Though I've been there, done that (was in some "3l1t3 h4x0r cl4n that defaced other's webpages), I tend to shun myself from all that now, webpage defacement is an art, not a competition ... but I don't agree with it at all in the first place. A simple email to the webmaster will do...let some steam off you know. Especially if they have no clue to what the hell their posting, and just being the biggest lamer they can be...it's quite challanging... yet extremely fun - I swear it'll be an Olympic sport one day...
This is a post to my previous post.
Rogue I did misunderstand you to a degree. I still think the code library etc is a valuable resource to security professional. I don't agree with helping hackers, but in some cases I have learned this the best way to learn security. I extend the olive branch to you, so that we may one day control ALL of AO in harmony.
Accepted. I just want to say. . . I didnt mean that I wanted the archive removed. . . there is a lot of great info & programs in there. . . . I use some of them. :::shrugs:::
