AntiOnline is NOT slow... That is your crappy connection, I have DSL and the page loads like lightinng... So check your connection, It might be YOU! :D
I got a faster connection then you acid, still the pages load slow.
agreed... even on a 56k i have seen this load fast (even though i am rolling with a t1 lan now... hehe)
uh excuse me, but if by RDMS you mean relational Database like SQL-Type... what else do you think Anti-online uses? And *ANYWAYS* RDBMS take more horsepower, I mean, flat files are fast, so your argument makes no sense.
gepeto my argument makes plenty of sense. it is your brain that is at fault. thanks to rdbms, tables can be joined which then limits the number of queries to the database. in web applications, numerous queries cause major slow downs. i know damn well what i am talking about. Oh and at home I use dsl and at work I am on a T1, so don't blame me.
Ok this is weird, I just tried IE on my wintel box and AO loads very fast. But I use Mozilla as my standard broswer on all my boxes. SOmehow Mozilla takes ages to load AO pages.
JP this place is IE friendlier then I thought or I must go back to Netscape.
I don't see what the point of this is. If you have a suggestion then there is a forum for that. If you are bitching just to bitch then go somewhere else. AO's speed is just fine. maybe you should try some tweaks for your system.
Here is the unsolicited opinion of a user that has a 56k dial-up connection (with a free provider non the less!!)
I would like to say that I am extrememly impressed with the speed and stability of this site, when everything else seems to be taking forever and six years to load....Antionline is at least twice as fast!!! The frequent and reliable speed, coupled with the fact that this site is rarely (if ever?) down for any reason are the largest contributing factors in my choice to learn here in your forums.
Wonderful site...keep up the great work!
Netscape is slow. It is limited on how many threads per session you can open. IE doesn't have the same limitations (or it has like twice as many, but still limited). As far as speed goes Opera kicks them both in the dirt.Quote:

Well it´s obvious, but it won´t make me switch. I have always relied on Netscape and Mozilla and I always will ;)Quote:

Thanks for the advice tough
Focmaester: Ok I don't wanna start a flame war, since you're right that AO is a bit slow at spitting pages, and ok maybe the ability to join tables makes everything faster but, did you really think it didn't run on a RDBMS ?
How about JP starts charging all of us to be here and then we can have a ligit bitch about speed but until then Shut the **** up you cheap bastards.
Not a very nice thing to say, you didn´t hear it from me but prepare to get flame broiled the next few hours ;)Quote:

I use IE6.0 and like I said before it loads fast as sh!t, so for me... Its fine :)
Ah...finally, a man with the same taste with words as myself... Couldn't agree with you more :)Quote:

Hey if thats whats going to happen then let it happen I only post what I feel is the truth. How would you feel if you where the creater of this site and all you heard was we want this we dont like this, Computers arent cheap and nether is the top connections JP does this for no personal gain he gives up alot of free time to cope with everyones petty problems and doesnt get anything for it in return. Im not trying to be a kissass ether to JP or anyone else. I am just a man to tells the truth the way I see it and I dont sugar coat it for no one. If you disagree with me tell me the reason here. thanks for hearing me out!
One other thing that is slowing down AO is the boxes he is using,
Currently AO is running on two, 2 Ghz servers with 1 gigabyte of Ram, one of the boxes is used for MYSQL and the other APACHE. With these running a site like AO, I can see why it could be slow for someone. One other thing, just if you wanted to know they are hooked up with a dual t1 PtP connection, so it is a nice network.
You should stop picking on that dumb newb, he didn't know what he was talking about, just leave him alone.
ghost, what is this about free time? you seem to think antionline is a hobby site. Well rest assured, it certainly is not. It is JP's job to keep this forum running otherwise without it Antionline would slowly but surely lose all its visitors thanks to the lack of content. This site will never be a pay site because JP knows very well he will not have many people willing to pay. The reason it is free is because it attracts visitors which then increase advertising revenue. As for gepeto, the reason i brought up the rdbms was the fact that the forum performs 15 queries to retrieve very small amounts of data. the whole purpose of the rdbms is to build relationships between tables as to easily access data between them with limited amounts of queries. and i am no 'newb'.
I run IE 6.0 also, and it loads very slowly for me. However I'm fairly certain it's my ISP, they aren't the greatest....But I have found a great way to pass the time....I open a game of spider solitaire, and play while the page is loading. Does anyone know if there is a Spider Solitaire recovery group? I think I am in serious need of one...I'm almost disapointed when the page opens (and not just here....any page, I think I have a serious problem!) :D
When you're trying out different browseres, make sure to test them one after the other...AO, like a lot of forum sites, seems to vary a lot in terms of speed. I've seen uncached pages take anywhere from half a sec to thrity secs to load.
IE6 with a 256 Leased Line ... and everything is just fine with me ...
but it happen to be slow from time to time ...
i think it has something to do with number of users online ...
the more users the slow it goes ....
and i think this thread should be moved to site sugg. !
I've noticed also that the site has become increasingly slow, but it is still a quick site... The little message at the bottom that tells how long it took the server to generate your page is nice... I've noticed it change quite a lot over the last two or so weeks... The increased delay appears to have come from a hack attempt on AntiOnline a few days back... The type appeared to be a DoS attack, because when I checked the Who's Online Section, there were over 1,000 guests, all at the home page... (I have an archive of it, but am not distributing it (yet?) - 1.27MB HTML File)
The attempt occured around 8:00PM, 3 - 9 - 2002 (My Time, Japan, +9 Hours). Before that, it would take about 0.000072 seconds or so for the server to make my page... After the attempt, it takes almost a second... I think the timer thing is about how long it takes the page to be made on the server, not how long it takes to download. I have a 56k connection, so I doubt it would take 0.000072 seconds to download it all...
Anyways, this is just what I think is the cause of it...

I´ve no problem during the day here but after 6:00 pm GMT it´s no use trying to get on AO. Any other europeans experiencing this?
Hello Pooh-Bear.
I have no problems with connection to AO any time the day (or night).. Sometimes its slower and sometimes pages do not load to 100% . But overall is the performance good, the most of the problems can I blame on my ISP who is a bit crappy.. They have bandwidth limitations and the only way to get a decent speed is to use their proxy.. But this proxy are down now and then (read : often), thats my only problem for the moment :).Quote:

The pages load the same all the time. Even tough I have a fast connection AO takes ages to load.Quote:

But I use Mozilla, so guess I might as well stfu :)
oh and Gepeto I never said anything about the database, just that loading AO pages takes long.
When I´m on AO I use three different highspeed connections depending on my location. Two different T1´s and (not so often) a fiber connection. (and IE 5.5)
AO does seem quite slow on my 56k connection with IE, but I think its more down to the time required to render the tables more than anything else. Even when I execute queries on my local server it takes >0.3 seconds to respond, so AO isn't that slow really, considering how many hits it must get each day.
