Internet Cleanup Day

Subject: Internet Cleaning
Please pass this notice to other users who may not see it!
As many of you know, occasionally the Internet must be shut down for 24 hours in order to allow us to clean it. The cleaning process, which eliminates dead e-mail and inactive ftp, www and gopher sites, allows for a better-working and faster Internet.
This year, the cleaning process will take place from 12:01 a.m. GMT on May 1 until 12:01 a.m. GMT on May 2. During that 24-hour period, five very powerful Japanese built multilingual internet-crawling robots (Toshiba ML-2274) situated around the world will search the Internet and delete any data that they find.
In order to protect your valuable data from deletion we ask that you do the following:
Disconnect all terminals and local area networks from their Internet connections.
Shut down all Internet servers, or disconnect them from the Internet.
Disconnect all disks and hardrives from any connections to the Internet.
Refrain from connecting any computer to the Internet in any way.
Avoid placing operating microwave ovens or toaster/toaster ovens near your computer modem.
Avoid wearing nylon (or other dielectric fiber) undergarments because of the possibility of electrical discharge.
We understand the inconvenience that this may cause some Internet users, and we apologize. However, we are certain that any inconvenience will be more than made up for by the increased speed and efficiency of the Internet, once it has been cleared of electronic flotsam and jetsam.
We thank you for your cooperation.

I don't think anyone could have believed that!! :)
But imagine, could the world survive without the internet for 24 hours? What will happen? Heaps of people/organisations depend on the internet, imagine what would happen if it were turned off or shut down. I know you can't 'turn off' the internet, but imagine you could. I reckon there would be chaos!!

I wonder how many AOLer's will mass mail it to ppl in their address book. :)
This also reminds me a phone hoax; can't remember the whole thing, but it went something like:
Put a plastic bag around your phone, because the phone company would be blowing the lines out, since they had gotten so dirty...
Pretty funny.

I actually remember seeing something like this years ago. Back in the early 90's. The school I was attening just was actually contemplating shutting down their servers for the day.
I remember that phone hoax also. It was all about how the lines had gotten dirty which cause static on some phones, so they were going to blow the lines out. I actually knew people that disconnected their phones, and put the end of the wire in the trash can, so that it would be blown directly in the trash, and they wouldn't have any clean up to do....
-
Blow out the phone lines, never heard it, that's hysterical though.
-
I remember seeing this hoax before. I read it to make sure it was the same one. Hehe...but it is an interesting thought. Imagine all the unmaitained junk there is on the internt. Wouldn't it be nice if it were all "washed" away?
-
heh.. I decided to bump up my old thread to add something that will help in cleaning up the internet.. Of course, before we can clean the internet properly, we'll have to safely shut it down..
and so, in that regard.. I bring you this link
Just click on the little red button and all will be fine..
on a side note.. as I had posted this before we had a tech humor forum..
would neg or MsM please move this over to tech humor for me ? TIA..
