Project Messanger
This is a real shot in the dark, but I think it's a really cool idea.
I suggest that we make an AO messanger. I think it would be really cool to have our own instant message system. Im sure if we all come together and help with this project that we will be able to make a better messanger then aol, icq, and msn. Just think a messager with no ads, no popups, no spam messages..... Any wyas it's just an idea tell me what you think....

Sounds like a great idea. I've only programmed once my sophmore year and have never done any since, so I'm no good. But good luck to your idea and anyone who's willing to make it work.
-
Hmmm, I dont think I could help much.... I could make the web interface to the Messenger though :)
Its a good idea, but i dont think abyone here is willing to give up that much time, LOL....
Hmmm, Im gonna do some research.. Maybe I can decompile AIM or ICQ and tweak some settings, remove some ads/buttons, etc. :)
-
http://www.planet-source-code.com has some cool stuff to look over.....

-
umm how ezactly would u decompile AIM...oh nm found it a google :)
-
I agree this is a good idea... there is so much talent spread around AO that this could definitely be done. It's a fairly big project, and costly for the servers, so I doubt anyone will take it on. Maybe that could be part of that "premium" thing that seems inevitable to come.
-
You know I totaly forgot about money... *lol* :D Good point jehnx.... Getting a messanger up and running would be a bit costly....

I reckon it's a good idea, but yeah, as jehnx said, it will take time and money. How about we create a team!! A team of people who stand for the greater good...or just for AO Messenger. I can play a part in this team...ummm...I'll give all the programmers mental support. It is needed, without this support, the Messenger will be full of bugs!!
:)

Good idea, hot_ice, hehe. I'll be on the morale team as well. ;)
-
sounds great!!
i could do interface, webdesign, and stuff like that. =) keep me up on this.
-
What about just throwing something up on top of jabber and one of their generic clients? Seems like this has been done and redone by a lot of different folks. LOL
-
Yeah ok what till the newbies download it, people you don't realize it could be worse then the IRC, every 5 minutes "How do I hack hotmail" I just don't think that it would be such a great tool for AO to have. Also how could you trust someone here to program somthing, it's like asking to download a trojan. Maybe if someone that JP really trusted but that's it. Downloading programs are always risky. I would have to see source code to actually run it. On decompling AIM why don't you go look up the AIM/Oscar protocol in the RFC's and learn how it works first. It's a nice idea to bring to AO but I don't see it happening and there is already to many things out there for IM. Doesn't trillian allow you to chat with people on IRC that you put on your buddy list. I don't even think you have to connect to a room. That's basically the same thing but not everyone here connects to IRC.
-
it has it's goods and bads, but the question is, is it worth the effort. we have irc and that is the best. but i can help to some degree if people decide to do it
-
Feh.......lord_darkside_x got to it before I could.......
Yeah, we do have the IRC channel.......why bother coding up something new? And besides.....given the number of operating systems used by AO members, it'd be a real pain to code. You'd have to have windows, mac, linux, BSD......all manner of different versions.
-
this suggestion has popped quite alot - the only advantages that people could think off over irc was that it could do like msn and alert you when u have a new PM or when someone asigns you new antipoints - but when u egt a pm a pop-up box alerts u anyways :)
its not a bad idea but from a safety point of view it ain't a good one either ;)
but hey if it does go ahead I'll help in what lil way i can - i dunno make coffee or something :D

I'll sign up for the standing on the sidelines cheering you guys on team...lol!
Deb :D

i've been trying to work on something like this for a while, it's kinda hard for me because im a pretty sloppy coder, im all self taught. i would be willing to get in on this as long as it's an equal effort from everyone.
-
it was suggested before im sure of it or did i dream it..? no it was reality and i think the idea was smashed cause insnt that what the buddy list is for...?

I could do some interface stuf for linux/unix..
but just the frontend.
I'm not much of a engine designer
cool idea btw
-
Perhaps I can help with a few things...... I can help with webinterface and programming of it.
-
Good call valhallen. I was wondering if anyone was going to point out that this idea has been brought up at least twice this year.
Programs like this are ALWAYS suceptible to one type of hack or another. If done properly, it could be great, but I can already here the questions...... <name> punted me from AOIM, how do I hack him?
-
*lol* thats all we need... Stupid scripter kiddies asking how to hack other AOIM members.... Im glade to see this thread geting so meny replys.... Now if I can only get JP to reply... :deal:
System_0verload
-
lmfao...... We'll be getting "How Do I Hack AOIM?" threads and it will suck because JP will be like, wtf?!?!?!

Musings on AOIM
Sounds like a great idea. I'll be having a lot of free time starting June (summer vacation), and I'm good at coding, so I think that I could probably help on this.
As for the server stuff, it's not too necessary for a lot of space; all the server really needs to store are names and i.p. addresses, and status (on or off) (if using one-to-one communication), everything else can be handled directly between the two chat clients.
When it comes to scriptkiddies, access to the chat client and/or certain people could be limited or based on meeting certain criteria such as time on AO, antipoints, and/or amount of posts. People could also set the criteria for themselves so that only those they want or who fit their individual criteria can contact them.
Since this is a security site, I suggest that the communications will be encrypted though with which algorithm, I know not, though it may be choosable based on user programs/preferences.
If a community chat is wanted, like our own private IRC, we probably would need servers, though I believe JP probably has enough spare space that we could do this, though we could make it so that users can choose to use their own computers/servers as the servers for the program. In the latter case, JP's servers could just hold the addresses of active servers.
Of course, due to the nature of the users on this site, the program must be entirely open source, to qualm suspicions.
After the basic program(s) is/are created and tested, subsequent additions could include compatability with others such as AIM, trillian, and IRC.
For "special features", I propose a few of the following:
* uses the same rules as the forums, so that things such as smilies also work in chat
* includes a special browser for the AO forums
* since I know so many of you like em, it will also include IRC commands (if possible)
* quick pm access through the chat client
For interoperability, the program could be totally selfcontained, or after the basic (windows) version is done, it will be adopted to others as soon as possible by any who can spare the time, though final authentication for use must go through a central program administrator.
Like windows media player, the program could also be able to utilize skins for a more adoptable look and feel.
Being as the program is for a site concerned with security, by people concerned with security, the program could be updated faster to accomodate problems/bugs/security issues. Along with that, there will probably be an auto-update feature that operates in the background so users don't have to bother with large periodic upgrades.
Thanks for the patience if you read this whole post, and I will update it as I see more issues to address. Maybe later (if I get to and/or remember this) I will start to post the beginnings of the code for the program.

I think it sounds like a great idea....and to solve the problem of just anyone getting the client (ex. scriptkiddies) make registration for it based on past your trial (newbie) membership to AO.
Even though I've been on here quite frequently since I've signed up, it would still take me a helluva long while before I get to the required posts to become established....
Just a thought though....still new...hehehe
(and BTW if someone does decide to do this, I have no idea of what kind of methods one would use to create an IM program like this...I would be very interested to learn though.)
-
Yep,I think an anti-online messenger would be a great idea,it would help newbies and regulars come closer together and we would be able to see when our AO buddies are online without having to check in irc or see if they are logged on on the AO forums:(.

Awesome idea. I could help with the interface, and maybe some programming. I'll decompile aim and some other messengers and figure it out. I just checked out a bunch of programming books, so I will read those and help at coding. What language will it be in?
-
There is another little problem.
There are too Instant Messengers. I'm yet using Trillian with ICQ, AIM, MSN and IRC! So.... another messenger! I think it is too.
-
This could be like a private mod of trillian -- works with everything yet has its own look and feel. That would mean that to access all (major) others, you would only need the AO Instant Messanger.
-
I'll chip in with anything Java related (a java client maybe). Also, we should register this project on sourceforge and make it open source (BSD Lisence).
Cheers,
cgkanchi.

hi! i am a newbie. i just i want add that this is a great idea.

Yeah, good idea. Although AOL wouldn't like that. They won't let me use GAIM. But the others I think would be fine. I got some message from them saying I wasn't using the real AIM and to get the real copy at their site. But Trillian works with it I think.

I know some Java, I could help you with it. *Claps* great idea about source forge, open source! open source! OPEN SOURCE!
Also, we need to talk about this on AntiOnline's irc, make a channel called "Project Messenger" or something like that, and we also need to make sure everyone here that wants to participate can be there.

Greetings All:
I appreciate the suggestion. However, we already offer a Private Messaging System, The Discussion Boards, and an IRC server. Plenty of ways to communicate!
If you want to make a difference, I suggest you help to increase the popularity of already existing resources that this site offers. Thanks!
