I have herd of many ways. Lets just assume you know my IP and nothing else. You want to get on, not just to crash it. I do not run ports such as net bios. Is it possible at all to get on with so little information?

*tut tut tut* Bad question.
Is it your computer. Because if it is, why don't you just use a remote administration tool? If it isn't your's, don't bother doing it at all.
i can walk into your house and stand on it.
[thats how i get onto it without netbios].
With such little information, I think it can only be dignified with a "Yes." And the simple reason... if you're protecting against someone bound and determined enough and with adequate knowledge, they'll get in...Quote:

...and equally ethereal answer, I know...

DOH! I hate it when that happens... to quote linuxcommando, I think. LOL
umm, nice double post draziw.
The answer joe, is yes, it is possible. Because it doesn't take much information. Everything else can be found out. Someone doesn't even to know what OS you are running. Can use nmap or something to figure that out. In other words, if you are connected to the internet, you are vulnerable.
The answer is, yes. For one thing, mostly all ya need is Ip/Host or DNS info. Second their are thousands of exploits to use such as my favorite, Telnet. :)
I was under the wrong impression that to break into someone you needed them to be running a service on one of their ports other than local ones. If I put a software firewall up could they still exploit it even if they did not know what ports to use?
yeah it just makes it harder, there is always someway around it.
The worst part about a software firewall is that it is itself a service. So if you know a flaw in the firewall.....
There is no true protection from all hacking attempts. Yeah, closing all your ports gets rid of the newbie script kiddies. Putting on a software firewall gets rid of the rest of the script kiddies. But you will never get rid of the people that actually know what they are doing and REALLY want to get into YOUR computer. Don't worry though, there really are not that many out there, and you would have to piss them off to make them go after you.
BTW....just so you know, closing all your ports and running in "stealth mode" as grc puts it is total bull sh**. The only stealth mode is to unplug from the internet.
well put soul..
then again... if ur not running any services like AIM or FTP or NETBIOS or whatever elese... why the hell would someone WANT to get in? ya thats what i thought...
-NetSyn-
If one of those rare hackers did get in without services running would they be able to get full access to all functions on my computer or would there be heavy limitations to what they could do?

hey hey hey...are you dissin steve-da-man... :D
grc does prove your computer is completely stealthed...(but only on the ports and services it scans for...ooops)
take your completely grc approved "stealthed" box and point it to dslreports.com .... run their scan...gee...a closed but responding udp port...hmmm...whatcha know...hehe
thing is grc is a pretty good tool...but how many tradesman you know with only one tool in their toolbox...
ya...ok mebbe you're right...only way to protect your self is to reach over...grab hold of the cat5 and give it a real hard p....zzzzzzzzzzzt -------------------
zigar> gee, guess I forgot about Tempest...aka Van Eck Phreaking... and then there is the reading of routers blinking lights (yet with no eth card)....Then there is always the fact that the monitor screen can be seen reversed showing on the person lookin at it. But if you don't have that close of access...
As far as seve-da-man, well, he does have some decent tools. And he has some decent articles. But he is more for media attention then for doing much worth while. So.....
Anyone know how to turn off a ping responce?
Joe, Yes, if they have obtained root on your machine (*nix OS's Only) then they have the superuser account. Otherwise if you got a M$ machine and they break in, it would depend on many things. First, if they used a trojan/backdoor, which is lame buh all the same, they would have full access. I am against trojans so I wouldn't use it. But also some services like ftp hacking and netBIOS hacking, gives them access to files. Other services like ping are ment for other reasons.
Yes,
Heres an extreme example,
Someone traceroutes your ip finds the address of your isp, calls your isp, social engineer the underpaid overworked techie to verify your address,go to your house wait till you leave then takes out your hard drive and brings to his house. :)
ROGDOMMFL Dude your funny, lol. They actually could do that although I wouldn't go through with the trouble. Btw, anyone have msn messenger?
