Remote Shutdown

Yeah maybe this is because I am elementary at this however I don't think it is too hard to comprehend. I am trying to do the remote shutdown on computers on my network. The command syntax for a network computer is the following

shutdown \\hostname

it is that easy with a variable of different number of switches everything to range to time to cancel everything HOWEVER the thing is is that even though I am trying to do it to a computer right besides me it is comming back as Initiate System Shutdown failed. Does the computer that I am trying to accomplish this on have to have the shut down program installed on it as well?

If it's a prog (server/client) you are using to do the job, then yes. However most newer NICs are capable of r3mote startup and shutdown by themselves.(no extra app needed). For instance if you look in the BIOS settings on a Dell GX1 you'll see you can disable it there. Does that help?

No the program is Shutdown.exe that is included into the Windows 2000 resource kit and it is used to shut the whole computer down as a total. Now I don't do programing so I don't know if this program is used to run on the host machine to trigger something on the target or however it is done. Microsoft hasn't explained that much in the TechNews. I was wondering if it is like BackOrfice was where it had to reside on the actual machine or if it is a trigger?

Yes, perhaps I was a little harsh.


All I can suggest from the limited info is that a program is still running on the box you're trying to shutdown. Try typing

shutdown \\computername/c


The "c" will force all running programs to quit.

All cool had a bad day yesterday, I tried that, well to be honest I tried all the switches and none of them work...do you have to be on a domain to do this...Microsoft never listed the stipulations on performing this if there are any...

I'm at a loss. I thought the c switch would of worked for sure. I guess your question isn't that simple. Once again, I apologise.

On a side note.........you were saying that the box you're trying to remotely shutdown is sitting next to you. I assume if you try and shut it down manually it all works ok?

The worse part about this is is that if I (from my computer) treat it like a remote shut down it works?....Am I saying that right?

and it works? however for other computers I get a "Initiate System Shutdown failed" make any sense now? that is about the most I know to give a explanation for. Also I had copied shutdown.exe to the machine that is my guinea pig and it still didn't work? Don't ask why I want to do this it is just part of my job.....lol

Oh, yeah the box is fine however I am trying stuff and watching it do nothing to it .

Are you admin on the network? That is, do you have Administrator rights on that computer?

check the domain policy or the local policy of the machine...if appropriate rights are not given to

local security policy/user rights assignment/force shutdown of a remote system

the you won't be able to force a remote shutdown...


btw unless there is a compelling reason to have remote shut down enabled it's a good idea to not...it can be a security risk if someone force you system to reboot...

On the remote computer yes however not on our network so.

Administrator privliges:
Local Computer-yes
Destination Computer-yes
Domain-no

Also since they are on a domain and I am on a workgroup does that matter? I figured by having administrator rights and when the security policy states Enable shutdown from remote computer.....Administrators then it should work right? Like I said this is a psudeo-project for my domain in a way brand new and trying for the first time...like I said before just now learned how to access Admin$ and C$ on a hard drive.

So you have identical accounts on both computers with admin rights? If you're saying you're able to access administrative shares then you should indeed have admin access....

pretty sure that's your problem...if your network is set up properly you'll need to be a member of domain admins to perform domain functions like shutdown...

OK, next question if the target computer has force shutdown enabled and I am on a different workgroup will it work...like I said before MS never described or revealed any stipulations behind this.....anyone know what they are with a "hard copy" (page from MS or other) stating the stipulations?

Well, as I said, if you're NOT logging to a domain, ie: you logon to the local comptuer, you HAVE to have an identical account (same username and password, with in the admin group) on the remote host. If you DO logon to a domain, either need to be in the domain admin group OR do as if you were not in a domain. Obviously you need remote shutdown rights on the remote machine, but I believe the admin group has that right by default...

i havent used that particular app before, but i assume it has optional user and password switches. try doing something like this(u = user switch, p = password, c(from what i gather) = close all running programs)
shutdown \\computername /u:computername\username /p:password /c

No no switches like that and I got the program to work however on a different computer and it the person wasn't doing anything she had left it open with no programs running no windows for IE or anything...wierd so I am thinking that it works just has a registry key that it triggers that won't work for the /c switch? Hmm, also I didn't have to copy the program over which leads me to believe that it is in the registry...sound right?
