In the last four days I have given positive points to three members for their posts. Each member has contacted me as the points showed up as negative points.
Now I know, I'm a "newbie" by AO standards, but I sure as hell know how to select a radio button and click submit.
What gives?
Did their points show up as Red or Grey. Like you said, you are a newbie, you may not have enough 'status' yet to assign Green (positive) points. If that's the case, the people you give out points to will receive Grey points (which are neither positive or negative).

Yes DjM is right the only thing you can give is gray.
As far as I know, one was grey. Not sure about the other two, other than the showed up as negative points.

They should have not been + or -
They are not negative, but they are not positive either, they are neutral. JP did this (I think) because of abuse in the early days of the AP system.

I checked out my status and as of yesterday it apepars I can now give out Green points...
My AntiPoint status shows I have given out no negative points, so I guess it was my unfamiliarity with the system. But the question still remains... why did each user contact me about negative points assignment? The points must have shown up as negative to warrant or facilitate the contact.

The short answer is, the people that you assigned points to, likely don't understand the system either.

I think they just contacted you about the point assignment, it doesn't say it was + or- right?
They clicked the button that says "Contact User about Antipoint Assignment" That means that you probably didn't sign the message. They either don't know what they are doing, or wanted to let you know that you were not actually giving out points, just going through the motions.

It looks like the users saw a grey box, and assumed that meant negative, not knowing that it meant neutral.
