Windows ME problem
I have windows ME and sometimes/most of the time when i click on a link on the web there is this long pause while it goes to the page. This just started to happen recently. I am on dsl so usually the pages just pop right up, also when i type something in a forum, i can type but nothing shows up then all of the sudden it all floods in. It is some sort of delay that i am experiencing. I do not experience this with netscape but i really am not too fond of netscape.
Any help, ideas, or suggestions would be appreciated. ;)

what do you have running? have u recently installed or updated anything that could effect it?

ya blubster, it gives me the blue sreen of death half of the time when i run that program btw..
-
Maybe you have some sort of SpyWare on your computer that logs everything in IE......
-
dont say that dome he`ll prob start iunistalling everyting, lol
yeah but limewire came with spyware, anyone know anything bout blubster?
could be blubster raping your bandwidth, or cpu cycles
My system got better when i uninstaled it, if your looking for mp3`s get Audiogalaxy!

hmm, I don't have an answer, but I'm running ME, too, with IE 6, and it does the same for me from time to time...
Maybe you've added a prog that is interfering somehow?
Deb :D

nah preep i wont uninstall everything, i man not that new. I cleaned out all spyware with athird party ad removal software, i am however uninstalling blubster...
-
i waz just making sure ;)
software like limewire, morpheous have some problems.
and they have all caused probs on my system, ive found out that kazaa and audiogalaxy are the only ones that dont cause errors, or viruses found.
-
ya blubster is a cool little mp3 search engine, nice layout, easy to use, and small. The only problem is when you get in line to downlaod and it is to que more than one person up the program locks your computer up and displays the blue screen of death, it does for me anyway :) Something is even making my 3d studio max lock up from time to time, i am thinking of swtiching to windows 2000, better for 3D anyway i hear.
-
yeah, some software can be funny, i remeber when i wuz a kid i had a copy of dungeon keeper 2 ans it just crashed evertime i started the second level.
its all to do wiht what drivers are loaded, and how well they work, a mate of mine had a cool little proggy called "Driver Detective" it showed you how old you .sys .dll and .vxd files are.
hey ive always got on well with windows, i fix the thing as a hobby
lol

many software do that kind of thing. its not your os or the browser you are running. it might be happening because you are running that program the same time you are using the internet. it happens to me when i use my printer and start typing. sometimes my cursor freezes on a spot for a couple of seconds. its the program probably hogging your memory.

If need a spyware free version of a kazaa(file sharing program) Go to www.kazaalite.com and get a version which some coders have removed all the spyware
-
i think the title of this thread says it all
-
Hey come on Windows is not that bad
-
How's the CPU usage? Can you check it at all with Win ME? Does it always do this 'delay'? Cos if it doesn't, see what other programs are open and using the CPU when you are browsing the Internet. Maybe try close almost all your programs, then see if this 'delay' goes away.

i use trojan first aid kit to check the running programs and their location, if Ctrl+Alt+delete dosnt come up wiht much :P

maybe is that you have a spyware program on your comp because that happens to me and i check it out on my comp and i found a spyware program installed so i think it could be that or maybe is just coincidence

Don't overlook all "the usual suspects" when you
get a slowdown:
Lack of memory, mis-configured virtual memory, fragmentation
too many background processes.
Does it still do it right after a fresh reboot?
Remember, ya gotta reboot a lot.

Windows Me!!!! I feel bad for you brother......

Ya system overload it is rough, i have linux on a 4 gig partion on this pc but i have yet to install the drivers for the modem i have to be able to access the internet. Damn usb modems and their incompatibility! hehe =)

I don't know if you want to hear this, but I tried Windows ME for about half a year, and I really hated it. I had lots of unexplainable errors, much like what you describe. I really suggest upgrading to Windows 2000 or downgrading to 98. You'll notice your system will work more smoothly.
-
i agree wiht gus
WinMe is just 98 wiht a few gadgets, and 2000 looking icons.
oh yeah did i forget it cant use MsDos?
preep
-
IMO winME is a downgrade from 98.

-
Ya i know WinME isnt the greatest but it came pre-installed on my laptop. The only other os that i have is linux mandrake. I really like it but i am having a hard time trying to get this usb modem to work with it. :)
-
hmm....i seemed to have that problem as well...i assumed that it was that fact that i have a slow computer and didn't really look up on it though.
/me shrugs

IF I were you, I wouldn't download (9communicator) for "Kazaa or Morpheus" heard they got hack! LOL
-
The one comment I haven't heard so far is:
Have you disabled you AntiVirus prog?
Even after uninstalling P2P progs I have still had "slowdowns" the problem ended up being the AV. Uninstall - reinstall of the AV, all returns to "ME normal"....
I feel for ya.. ME arrrrrrrrgh..
cheers

This is the same thing that happened to me. It was on my laptop when I purchased it, but after three or four months of getting pissed off everytime I turned the laptop on, I decided enough was enough and installed Windows 2000. I'm a much happier person now :-)
Shake, my suggestion, as stated previously in this thread - upgrade to Windows 2000 while you continue to work through your install issues with Linux.

Well, to be the voice of dissension...I have a dual boot, WinMe, and Win2k. Most of the time I boot into WinMe. I've never had a problem getting it to do what I want, and have VERY rarely had the blue screen of death problem. I use it all the time, and I like it. I would imagine that the answer to your problem is in one of the posts here. There are some very good ideas.

undertaker, an AV program is a must, mebe you should check your registry for errors of bad links, this mebe slowing everything down.
wow this is becoming a big thread

Preep,
I'm not saying get rid of AV, just to test the problem.. geez I won't recommend running with out AV protection..
Your comments are correct.. But most times when repairing ppls machines, Uninstall/reinstall is all that is needed.. most times reg hacks are not needed.. but to check a few common prob areas is a good idea. I hope I don't sound like I have come back with a flame thrower?
Back to the problem,
Also some crap installers have damaged Win system files, leaving ppl with knackered systems, even a warm install won't help.. system file checker may help..
Winsock, this can become corrupted after software install, even from a dubious script on a web page, some times deleting the registry link and restarting, sometimes system file checker and replacing the file.
Cheers

Debwalin........honey.......... I had Windows ME and didn't have many problems either, until my TCP/IP stack became corrupted and never worked again. I tried reinstalling TCP/IP and all that fun stuff. Even upgraded ME w/ ME. Nothing work till I switched to 2000...
-
Louie, you called me honey....I feel so SPECIAL!!! I actually have Win2k installed also, so I guess if worst comes to worst, I'll use it as my regular. I mostly have all the programs that I use all the time on ME, so that's what I use....not really that I like it better, I'm just lazy :D

Isn't Win ME the worst windows ever? I mean it's evan worse then Win 98....

Could be your hardware slowing you down. Or its just another one of Windows ME's endless problems.
