Really nasty case up here (Strong Stomach Required)

Cases like this are the most SENSELESS, PREVENTABLE things I have EVER seen... There are WAY TOO MANY people out there that do not know basic computer security principles. By not knowing these principles they put this country, their companies, their families, and themselves in danger every time they head out on the Internet. I have seen 10 year olds just walk right into a chatroom and hand out their phone numbers RIGHT IN OPEN CHAT. It was fortuante that she met a friend of mine who was kind to her. It could have had a VERY different ending for this little girl. I SEE NUMEROUS other people do similar things like this and think NOTHING of the EXTREME RISKS they take EVERYTIME they give out this personal information. I see Schools who rely WAY TOO MUCH on web blocking software (which I might add has security more like ****ing Swiss Cheese and can be blown though so easily it's not even funny) for more info see http://www.wtnh.com/Global/story.asp...=0Rde98yh9987. I know someone who works at a school in Florida that has security like this. He had his sysadmin cut off his 3 boxes from the Internet because I had told him the security at the school was bad and what kinds of trouble the kiddies could get into. The FBI says these cases are getting worse, not better. The only way to stop this SENSELESS BULLSHIT is to educate the people.

From what I've read about this girl, she was very troubled (read: scumbag bait) and had her own website with suggestive langauge on it. She was unknowingly attracting vultures to the meat :(.

Unfortunatly this is becoming more and more popular.

Now while the internet makes this kind of cruel event 'easier' it by no means started this kind of act. Things like this have happened since the beginning of time.

The problem is that young people as well as old alike do not see the internet in the "Don't talk to strangers, don't take candy from a stranger" manner that most of us have been taught. Most parents are so intimidated by computers that they either do not understand what their children are doing or don't care, because how can their children be in harms way in their own home.

What it comes down to is parents(and us as parents or future parents) to educate our children on basic principles, not just computer security practices.

How many parents would suggest going up to a group of strangers in real life and giving out there phone number? In honesty how many 13 year olds would? This is the responsibility of the parent to make this association, or else you have horrible stories such as this.

This case is now starting to get around the country. There is a WHOLE SECTION on MSNBC (which is at http://www.msnbc.com/local/DNT/default.asp?aff=DNT) that is devoted to this single case. While she did commit some very BIG security no-nos (see the 3rd link that is at the URL I gave in this post) That does not mean that we should condone the act...if there was any misunderstanding on this point I apologize. In fact this MOTHER****ING BASTARD needs to be subjected to death by slow torture....screw the 8th Amendment!!! The really SAD part of this case is that if the signs had been seen earlier this case would never have occured. When you take the 3rd link it will show you some of the language that was used on her Web Site....WHICH NO ONE EVEN KNEW SHE HAD. She had apparently engaged in this type of activity prior to the murder. I don't think this poor girl even knew what she was getting into because these pedo scum had effectively brainwashed her. As for where the parents were, they both had drug problems, she was living with her Aunt. Her Aunt, most likely not knowing anything about computer security or how the Internet works or how dangerous it can be was literally blind to what was going on. The Feds said that no one was monitoring her Internet usage.

I have to agree that more information on security on the internet is needed. That is why I joined this site, because I wanted to learn about security. I also agree that while she may have made mistakes she certainly did not deserve nor ask for what happened to her. It is an intense and horrific crime and he deserves the maximum punishment as well as several beatings if you ask me.
It is too bad that nobody was watching her, if they had maybe she would be here today.

These are my opinions...

Education of how computers work, security, and whatnot can be the life-saver for events like these. If the parents decided to actually be more involved in what their daughter was doing online (which apparently and obviously was a shitload more than "using it as a resource"), they'd still be talking to her today. Why don't the police want to release how long the convos were going on? Because that would almost be releasing what they talked about and you KNOW what they "talked" about. Here's a primary case of a 13 year old girl either trying to be an adult online where nobody knows the truth but her and in this case, chances are she was talking about what she'd "do" to him if she ever met him. They meet, she backs down because she's 13 with no clue, he gets pissed and kills her.

Does this mean she "got what she deserved"? Not by death, no..that's extreme. Maybe if she got beat down once she'd have realized that you don't pull **** like this on the internet. And it's both ways...the guy should've just dropped her like a bad habit the minute he knew she was 13 (or when they met). Instead, he's looking at bad **** rolling downhill because NOW, he's an illegal alien who just murdered a 13 year old American girl after sexxing her up online. The sad thing is is the parents "want to get it out in the open" but they're not taking any blame for it. It's just as much their fault as it is hers and this guy's...

If the parents were more active with their *****ing Compaq computer (or Dell or Gateway..you know it's a pre-packaged POS because they don't know better), they'd know what to look for and what to watch out for. If the girl actually talked to them, if they talked to her, etc etc..a thousand 'what ifs' are in order here but now, because of a bunch of mistakes all rolled into one, she's gone and a brazilian man is gonna hang out to dry.

Try not to think that if it were a guy found dead or whatnot, it wouldn't have half the attention it gets...

The problem today is that kids know more about computers then their parents do, parents need to be able to monitor what the kids do and what sites they visit but it's virtually impossible, unless if you have JP as your dad or something. Holland has a lot of these cases, in fact some 23 year old programmer flew all the way to the USA to meet a 13 year old girl who happened to be an FBI agent. He'll serve years in prison while here all you get is a few months or a stupid warning.

You 2 guys just hit the nail on the head. I've been saying it for YEARS!!!!!!!! PEOPLE NEED TO BE MORE SECURITY AWARE AND MORE AWARE OF HOW THE INTERNET WORKS. It's the ONLY WAY that you are ever going to be able to curtail the rising tide of these cases. The FBI says this problem is getting WORSE, not better. And we know that no one was aware of what was occuring because the Feds said so, not her Dad (who was the one that bought her the box and is now beside himself) nor her Aunt.

Authorties are still too REACTIVE when it comes to Internet cases due to the way our laws are written, lack of training, and lack of staff. The solution is for them to take a more PROACTIVE role, which they can't do untill they fix the above problems I just mentioned. It's going to be a while :(.

I'm all for the proactive approach to this kind of law enforcement.

Unfortunately it will never be as good as parents who care and watch over their childrens actions.

Law enforcement has to go to the source, and this means monitoring every chatroom,IRC channel, Instant messenging, for sicko's like this guy trying to set up meetings with children. As you can imagine this would be a huge undertaking, that in the end, could have be replaced with good ole fashion parenting.

Its not like this was a guy who was stalking children at an elementary school, where a cop on the beat could have prevented this evil person from committing such an act, it started in the home, where the parent/guardian really has the control.(I'm sure that the 13 year old didn't go out and purchase the computer herself, pay for the isp/telephone line)


Then again I'm torn. It has become so that good people of society cannot rely on other people to watch over their own kids. As a side effect, society is compassionate( and rightly so) towards these poor victims, and we feel that there should be changes.

As stated before, people need to become more "Internet-literate" and security aware. But one of the biggest problems I see is that the personal computer has become just like the game consoles and is a babysitter. Turn the kids loose and ya don't have to worry about them for a while. Sad commentary on our society, but for the most part, I believe it is true.

And as for the comments about proactive law enforcement, Monday our state division of criminal investigation along with local police arrested a man from another state who crossed a state line to have sex with a "15 y/o girl" he met on the Internet who turned out to be an undercover agent. They have had a lot of success with these stings, but it makes me wonder - for all the arrests they have made how many more of these creeps are getting away with their crimes?

I feel very sorry for the whole family involved....what do you say when things like this happen. I have been sitting here trying to think of a way to keep this from happening.......I am stumped! I can watch my own child as he grows and ensure the proper things take place for his saftey and my own. Hence my involvement with this site.

What I have managed to think up is....we need a new kind of program....way beyond NET Nanny (which I really am unsure of due to ..I have never seen the program) That would ensure compleate saftey from the outside world. An invisable program that the top minds themselves create. Now as we all know that every program created is a challenge for other minds to get around and over come.

I know a tiny fraction of what is offered on this site and it has heaped me with excellent knowledge (thanxs all) how do we get parents to learn this knowledge...Unfortunatly some parents are unwilling to learn and take part in the day to day lives of their children. Which is truly sad. Then we have things like this happen and every one says " How could this have happened?" Now I am not condemning the parents they I am sure have done enough of it to themselves. I am going to say that we all need to take part in the lives of our family and friends....next time it could be your cousin ..your sister....your aunt anyone at all....Lets all watch those we love and hope for the end of crimes like this.

To keep this short. My wife and I are planning(seriously, never thought I would buy pregnancy tests off the net =P) on having children, and I plan on getting my son/daughter computer literate as soon as possible. But I want to be there ever step of the way.

If I feel at anytime that my child is in danger(whether it be in real life or on the net) thats were I step in. If I see that my child is going onto chat rooms and talking suggestivly or is getting comments from others on 'meeting places' thats when I pull the plug. If I'm not around, no computer, until my child understands that those kind of people are dangerous and should be avoided. Until then the cat5 and nic card are being locked up(literally)

We would not drive our children to 'bad' areas of town because they want to meet someone.
Perhaps a bad analogy, but I think it make my point.

Found the normal Child Privacy Acts and such.

I've got a story for you:

I found this story several years ago on a website that her family had built just for this purpose. It involves a New Jersey Internet Pedophile case. Sadly I have lost track of the URL to this site. It is a GREAT example of what can happen when parents and kids are security aware.

As I can recall, her name was Courtney. Courtney was 11 years old at the time this incident occured. She was very active in IRC chat and had always been toght by her parents of the possible dangers. Her and her sibling had always been instructed to trace down (using the standard IRC commands) any suspicipous people they might come into contact with...one day, a scumbag on IRC sends her kiddie porn via DCC. After notifiing her Mom, Courtney then traces this scum's IP down to a state of Maryland goverment address. The scumbag was a State employee. They both keep this scum online while the State of Maryland gets called from the WHOIS data. Eventually, this results in contact with a detective, who I'm sure was quite horrified that this was a State employee using State of Maryland equimpment. New jursey Police are contacted who then collected the kiddie porn that was saved on a floppy (which BTW was done under the direction and supervision of the NJ State Police, DON'T try this at home). This scum is now behind bars thanks to the work of this security aware family :)

I have to agree with this completely!! I am a mother two two young children who use the internet daily. I believe it is up to me to not only educate them about security and safety (online or offline) but to also educate myself about the things my children are into. I watch movies and even play video games before I hand them over to my kids. My children are fortunate (or unfortunate depending on your view) that their mom is a techie. Most parents are afraid of computers and don't understand how they work. They either choose to stay ignorant and hope their kids are safe or they disallow usage completely. Either of those options leaves children at risk.
I'd like to see communities offer Internet Security classes for kids and parents. There will always be predators out there in the world and we just need to become educated on the ways they use to get their victims.
What I'd hate to see happen here is parents just disallowing their children access to the internet. There is alot of benefit to what the internet has to offer, it simply needs to be supervised like any other activity we let our children participate in.

Obviously, there is a huge problem, and solutions are short....maybe i'm a dreamer but why can't we do something? We as a group *people who care about security - and obviously not just computer security, judging by the posts above* COULD do something.

Why can't we approach the companies that are sending out prepackaged computers for mass consumption (Dell, Gateway....) with a little book specifically for parents? I sincerely believe that the parents who are buying computers for their children, have their children's best interests in mind *education, etc*, but how many of them are TRULY aware of what is going on?

I know there is tons of information on the internet about protecting children from online preditors, but maybe some of these parents don't use the internet on a regular basis....or maybe they are completly oblivious.......??

I've heard it a million times.....kid gets computer for christmas....computer goes in child's room...with minimal supervision....

Why couldn't a little security book be included with these computers? Included with the user manual...something that WOULD get the attention of parents.

I think they shoulda did that the moment they began making these computers and should alert parents on the big dangers of the internet in a little handbook.

I really think some people are sick 4$$holes.... I mean she wasnt anything but a child he was 25!!! He should be set over to the middle east with a tattoo that says hes an american......lets see how many people would rape him!!! or slowly kill him...but what gos around comes around!

I agree!! Your idea is a great one...but alot of people get their computers second hand as well.
I started today by contacting my children's school teachers and giving them links to web sites where pamplets can be published to distribute to children's parents (for those who don't or can't go online) as well as websites set up for educating adults and children about internet security. I also volunteered to give a class at the school on this subject.

ok I think thats a really good idea but one prob......how many peps here ctually read all the sh1t they fire in with your computer? there are sooo many handbooks already =/
but while setting up a friends computer have noticed the norm now is to stick a questionaire on the computer which comes on the first time u boot up and is impossible to skip - what about putting a wee option on the first boot for parents to be able to read the information on the computer?

And then put it in the start menu so they can access it at anytime to refresh their memory - heh if it really took off it could even auto-update ;) fetching new info whenever they go online....

but it doesn't have to anything thayt complex - could even be done in html with the pages stored on the local HD........just a quick idea :)

There's no technological fix for this sort of thing.
It happens when the internet is not a factor.
These wierdos hang out at the pizza hut or the mall
or across the street from the high school.

Public hanging is the right answer.
on sunday afternoon, on the courthouse lawn
with a picnic basket, jugglers, clowns and kids
skateboarding on the courthouse steps.

All of the victim's friends get to look at the
perp, and tease him and call him names
as he is being led up the steps of the gallows
and a preacher solemnly giving him one last chance
to save himself from eternal fire.
