I once layed out a namming scheme for a small network that ressembled a chess board all the desktops were my pawns. Im sure if on a larger network you could use different "table" names for workgroups and possibly mix some popular chess game names and sites. I like to be creative. You might think that finding your way around a network like that would be to easy or not so secure but obscurity is only microsofts philosiphy.
Fish names, fruit names, charaters from a book, mythological creatures/beings, etc etc. Those have all been used on different networks I have worked on. Pick your favorite thing, then start naming.
If basketball is your thing, start giving them team names or player names. If you like star wars, name them after the different Jedi. If you like cooking, name them after recipies. If you like quiltings, name them after....well, never mind.
I've always like the use of types of sharks. Use the names according to their role on the network.
App server = nurse, firewall=hammerhead, IDS=GreatWhite, etc...
I sometimes use Sumerian god's, or character's in sitcoms. Not really inventive, but they work
our main servers name is numan from seinfeld
Star Wars names!!!!!!!!!!!!! you could have your servers the names of systems or charters and your desktops the names of spices or the children of those charters if there are any..
or you could go with the more organized look..... server1's name is alpha and the desktops connected to it are a1 a2 a3 etc..... server2's name is beta.....you get the pictrue
My clients prefer locations of said servers and systems (read: boring) but I like to get creative with my own and it varies depending on my mood. My favorite was when I hosted my website with Mindspring and the domain servers were called itchy and scratchy. :D
Sif don't name them after famous porn stars :p
I prefer naming stuff after constellations and planets. Lots up there to use as names.
firewall=Gandalf (servant of the secret fire also carries the ring of fire)
web server=Shelob (a gigantic spider)
proxy=Samwise (was the proxy ring bearer for a short while)
Cheers,
cgkanchi
Well, I'm going for Greek gods... Cerberus will be the firewall... :)

Once had a fellow sysadmin who named his systems after the moons circling Saturn and other planets...God, what a mess. I mean, come on...telnet enceladus?!
Wasn't Mars the god of War? Maybe a good name for a firewall...
Naming servers can be a pain in the posterior, but a Sysadmin's toughest job is trying to maintain damage control after you turn the L/users loose on your systems...
Mars is the Roman god of war and Ares (Aries) is the Greek god of war...Quote:

I am kinda boring but most of the tim I name mine after the OS or proccessor and speed.
Also one of the Systems admins toughest jobs are dealing with user that think they know more then you and then wonder why there computer wont work anymore.
I always name my workstations after my favorite cities I've visited.
My naming scheme is based on X-Men characters. All the machines I get to name at work are X-Men villains. My machines at home are all X-Men heroes. So I have beast (massive old tower that acts as my firewall), wolverine (my most powerful machine which is my desktop), gambit (which is my flaky alpha file server), morph (which is my honeypot and changes OS's occasionally), and rogue (my wife's desktop).
nah too creative i jsut stick with number they are easier for me to remmeber
I use si-fi shows, movies and the such. The charachters and ships etc...
Use comic book figures like from asterix/lucky luck.
Otherwise choose roman emperors
Caligula :: insanely cruel
I used figures from history various kings etc..
I have also used chess (thought i was original :( )
i have also used plain number alot with diffrent digits signifying workgroups user etc.
a sysadmins toughest job? trying to look busy/necessary after you've automated everything
:-)
Tedob1, true... unfortunatly for me, I'm at the "(re?)building everithing" stage... So I don't have to "look" busy..!

At my old work we used the names of greek/roman gods....
Now I do law firms and the names are lame.
If the place was called Klyde and Kalmer the names would look like this
KKServer
KKExchange
KKSnap1
KKFirewall
You get the point! My servers and workstations at home are all named after chics I've dated or wish I would have dated.... My favorite server is named Alisha, damn thing is moody as hell, runs when it wants to!
Me tend to name mine after gem stones ya know Diamond, Ruby...etc. I'd say the hard job of sys admin is knowing you have a ( | ) of work gotta hire outside consultants give them the scope of work while you fend off all your users and owners in a panic cause they have to work local and the consultants read say the understand the scope of work then do totally lame things cause you were keeping 47 users and 3 owners from distracting them from the scope of work that was not followed and leave you with a root password that is a cryptic message to me..me thinks that PO is a 120 day thing LOL
you know wot i think a DBA's job may be up htere as the hardest job....build and then taking ppl's ccrap on why some script wont work is definatly hard as hell. besides u dont to get creative cuz businesses want their tables and DB's called somethign relative to the company ...bah oh well
