NetBios, HMMM?
MY friend and i have lan partys every so often, and its really nice having netbios computer names pop up so we can trade patches and maps for games and such and have it go into the directory of the game. Is it possible to do this over the internet? Im not asking how to hack in and be an admin with read/write, Im just wondering if its possible to have those shares pop up. I know its a security no no to have it running on the net anyways but im just curious cause when we play multiplayer over the internet and not intranet it would be nice to be able to do our map trading.
-
yeah its possible.. just enable them shares and give them access to it.. but yeah its a no no since anyone can crack through and access your shared files and work their way up... or leave something nasty in your computer..
-
I mean, how do you access it from the internet, I can do it from a lan but i dont know how to While on the internet
-
you need the other partys IP address. Map a network drive.
\\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\sharename
My advice if you are going to do this : use STRONG passwords and make it READ ONLY shares.
-
instead of invoking that security threat over the internet.....why not ftp to eachother or all get AIM and trade files that way? just giving you some other options than bills gift to h4x0rs
-
PRobobly a dumb question, BUt how do i map a network drive?
-
right click network neighborhood... make sure you set up sharing first and set passwords... (to set up sharing: add microsoft client for file and print sharing, right click on the folder/drive you want to share and click share as, enter a name and a P A S S W O R D.
make the share read-only unless you really need the person connecting to be able to write.
apply etc)
-
You can also use the net commands in a dos prompts.
Type: net use /?
it will give you the instructions.
Basically, its:
net use <drive:> \\<computer>\<share> [password]
also works for maping printers:
net use <port:> \\<computer>\<share> [password]

Well, ftp is pretty much a security no no by now too...
Personnaly what I'd do is tunnel netbios in an ssh tunnel but that might be to complicated for Blaze for now....

I must be a totall moron or something, I cannot for the life of me get this to work through the internet, i run the net commands and it just tells me host is unreachable, i tried it under win 98 and Xp. Also, i tried running nbtstat -A over the internet with his ip and i cant get it to list his shares, He told me what the shares are named, but i still cant connect to them.
-
can you ping his ip?

YEs, i can ping and i get a reply

Do you guys use NetBEUI as transport protocol or TCP/IP (NetBIOS over TCP/IP) ?
(Check in control panel, network.... )

I reccomend not using NetBIOS. Try uploading them to a a free account you have. Or password protect the NetBIOS, and everything else. Get a firewall to monitor your netbios connections. Not many hackers would hack you, unless they were using you to perform an attack. The only person you have to worry about with your NetBIOS is a script kiddie.
-
HOw do i check if it is the transport proticall, I do believe it would be tcp/ip but i am unsure how to check on it!
-
do you mean check the connections to your machine for the tcp/ip protocol? Go into DOS, and type netstat -p IP or netstat -p TCP. This also works with UDP and ICMP.

uh oh...I feel it coming on.....
*FART*
stop trying to swindle a lame h4ck out of us.
-
ehmm,
giving them access or doing more than that, leaves you to be unsecured cos they can hack into,,,,,, it.
-
No offence or anything, but i really do not apreciate you saying im trying to hack somebody. Its pretty obvious im not hacking him when he gives me: His ip, His share names, and passwords to any shares. I dont know where you get off saying "stop trying to swindle a lame h4ck out of us" When what i am doing has absolutily nothing to do with hacking. Im not trying to figure out How to get the passwords for the shares or how to get some kind of exploit and break into netbios. You need to calm down and think before you post. Again, sorry if i offended you.
-
In control pannel, network (something), check if there is NetBEUI in the list of protocols.
Also, click on TCP/IP and click proerties, somewhere in these tabs is a checkbox for "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" check it.
*DISCLAIMER*: This is actually BAD advice security wyse. Do it at your own risk. (If you wanted to be minimumly cautious you'd use a firewall and let through only your friend's IP)

PS: Some of us get sometimes paranoid when asked insecure setting insecure configs... I guess it's the nature of AO's community..

Well, Its like this. NETBios is a form of exploitation on a windows machine. Why would you risk exposing yourself by enabling filesharing and netbios? Why go through all this trouble to set it up and enable a "Security Flaw", when you can simply get ahold of mIRC and DCC stuff? There are several other more secure methods you could be using, but you insist on trying to go thru netbios and keep asking how to enable stuff and access stuff. Save yourself the time and just DCC stuff. You claim its for games and maps and patches. How big are these things? I play quake and over the net it only takes me like 45 secs to download a new map over dsl. Even if you were to download several maps it would only take you a max of maybe ten minutes. (and thats for a LOT of maps) Why not just DCC it?
It sounds to me like your trying to figure out how to hack thru netbios. I smell something funny and its not Hogfly's farts.
Why are you not considering any other methods and dead set on using NETBios? What is your reasoning behind this?
-
Its not that i am not considering other ways, i was just wondering how to do it over the internet. I am on a 56k by the way, and so is he. We were just wanting to see how to do it over the net. If you think that i would use this for hacking, i would probobly do the same as you and be weary of telling me. But, i assure you i am not. I use mirc every once in a while. And some other file sharing utils. Im not insisting on using netbios as my main or even any way of file transport. i was just wondering how it could be done. If you dont want to tell me then by all means, you are under no obligation to assist.
-
save yourself a lot of trouble, there's a couple very good netbios tuts people here at AO wrote. just check the post labled index. or do a forum search.

Fair enough.. Heres what you do for win98
1) Goto Start--->Settings--->control panel
Double click network
In the window look for NetBEUI..
If its not there click on add... Click Protocal in the window and click add..
Choose Microsoft in the left window and netbeui in the right.. click ok
Now in the main network screen click on file and Print sharing.
check I want to be able to give others access to my files. click ok.
Now you should have an entry that says file and printer sharing for microsoft networks in your
"The following network components are installed:" window.
In the network window click on the "access control" tab.
click the share level access control selection.
In the identification tab enter some info about your computer to identify it.
click ok.. you may have to provide your win98 cd here..
Now go to the folder you store your maps and stuff in and right click on the folder and choose sharing.
Select the share as and enter your password info and sharename info.. Make sure you password protect it!
If you choose the depends on password for read write you will have to select two different passwords for each.. click apply and reenter the passwords again. click ok and again click ok.
Restart and your all ready.. have your friend do the same to his computer. When you ready to trade stuff click start--->find---->Computer and enter your friends ip and you should be all set..
If I missed anything lemme know peeps..
