AntiVirus Options
The most common Antivirus Tools out there right now would be Norton or McAfee well these do the job but I found a program does better (I think). It is called Kaspersky.
Norton AntiVirus:
www.symantec.com
McAfee AntiVirus
www.mcafee.com
Kaspersky AntiVirus
www.kaspersky.com
Try it out and post what you think. No real fancy graphics but it is awesome in it's scanning process.

Kaspersky is OK, but mcaffee and norton are better by far. And Norton was cnet's top antivirus pick. Most pick Norton for ease of use and their always current live updates.

The commercial implementation of Kapersky is very good. I deploy it on my network and all my clients networks unless they specify otherwise. The reason being is. It's been 100% at detecting virii on my clients machines. The best of all though, it does'nt use up as much resources as the others. You hardly even notice it's running. Thats one thing you can say about the Russians. They don't have the resources to develop and create bloatware with preaty interfaces. They make it do what it's supossed to do and thats it. Period. The newer versions even do script checking. It can be run stand alone or as a service or it has a snap in console to run it across a network. No I don't work for them but I've used them all at one time or another and Kapersky and the older F-Prot were the best I've used. McAfee and Nortons just use up to many resources running in the background. Besides Kapersky covers my Win2000 AS network and my Linux machines. I have yet to see McAfee or Norton cover Linux boxes. Which I think is a good thing, as more people go with dual boot machines you find them downloading .exe's with Linux and then placing them on shared VFat drives to be accessable over a network or the dual boot installation though their win32 platform. So it caches the entry of virii to a network regardless of where you download it.
Just my $.02 worth.

Panda is another virus software at www.pandasoftware.com

Another one worth looking into is AVG. It’s free and so far it’s served me well.

Is it free? just wondering ill check it out

Another free AV is Avast32, which is developing a pretty good following lately. It isn't Kaspersky, which might be the best out there right now, but for freeware, it's one of the best.

OFF TOPIC POST ON THE WAY.....
made-ta-hack (or made-to-hack ) .....last time I looked you were from India.....wtf?

You forgot PC Chillen http://www.antivirus.com. Kaspersky's scanner is excellent. It was the first AV scanner to be able to get rid of memory resident viruses without booting from a floppy diskette.

Hi there - I'm fairly new to the IS field - can anyone recomend a AV that is FULLY compatible with WinXP? I've dumped Mc due to issues that it throws. Commercial AV would be OK, but would prefer a freebie.
Thanks!

Okybugs-- I have seen two different corporate antivirus schemes put to use that I have liked, Norton Corp AV which seems to always be the first company to find a solution and fix for the latest bugs
OR Sophos seems to be a good one at another company I have worked for. Either way I recommend if you want good protection there are a series of things you need to look into.
Protect the systems, Protect EMAIL we use Antigen as the First tier of protection for email followed by a program by broadware (I think is their name) It does a deep scan and allows more detailed blocking of extensions and spam mail. Both Sophos and Norton or XP compatible and I like the layout of Norton.

OkyBugs...a couple have already been mentioned. AVG from http://www.grisoft.com is very good, although it hasn't done well in the latest virus tests (which I take with a grain of salt, anyway) and AVAST32 http://www.avast.com
Or, you can surf over to http://www.webattack.com/freeware/freeware.html and check out the offerings. There are several freeware versions there.
I use Kaspersky, which isn't free, and is good. But, the thing mentioned about their server being hacked gives me some concern. I was one of the many folks whose email addy was used to ship virused email around.

I think it happens more often then we think. This incident just slipped out. Eugene Kaspersky is a legend in the antivirus community. You do pay a little more for his product but its worth it.

AVG is the best antivirus program, and it's FREE

What about InoculateIT (CA's) ? Noone seems to like it, i guess! But I think its really good!

I used to be heavy into virus collecting( and NO I never EVER misused any specimin from my zoo) and I must say in the viral underground there were only 2 products that garnered any kind of respect: Kapersky's AVP and F-Prot from Frisk software. When trading virii, AVP logs and F-Prot logs are the standard way to verify the file's identity. Pretty good endorsement I think. Incidentally both companies make Linux virus scanners, too.
