Help with partitions
Hello. Ok i have a 40g hard drive I partitioned it into two 20g hrad drives. Now here is where it messes up. it lets me put WinMe on the first drive and run grate but when I try to put WinMe on the other half it say that I already have a OS on my system. So i tried Win 98 and it say that I have a newer OS on my system. After thanking for some time becouse I am very new at this I thought I would try to put Window2000 and it would let me download it but only on the same drive as my WinMe. So know I set here with Winme on half a brain and the other is just there. What can I do? I would like to put WinMe on both parts as I will be useing the 2nd part to test software and programs. Any info will help. Thanks

you dont need to have an OS on each partition...and you should be able to access/manipulate the second partition from ME, so i'm not really sure what your question is...
-
What program did you use to partition? Maybe you didn't fully seperate your partitions, they may still be linked. Happened to me before when I used fdisk, my redhat corrupted some files in my windows95. Try getting partition magic, worked well for me.

Ok I did a debug and took everything out and then it ask me did I want to partition so I did that when there was nothing in the computter. Then after a restart I had to boot with me WinMe disk. And it say I had to format the drive so I did and them it put WinMe on it then it say I had to format drive D so I did then that was it. It would not let me put it on drive D. I dont know of any other way to do it.

What program are you using????

Hum not sure what you r asking but let me try to answer. I am useing WindowsMe and would like to put it on both parts. I have 40g hard space 20 on each. As far as the partition I just use a debug script that works with all computters. I like it better as it takes everything out of the computter. Here i will post it.
A:\> debug
-f 200 1100 0
-a cs: 100
1cdb:0100 mov ax, 301
1cdb:0103 mov bx, 200
1cdb:0106 mov cx, 1
1cdb:0109 mov dx, 80
1cdb:010c int 13
1cdb:010e int 20
1cdb:0110
enter
-g
enter
ctrl+alt+del to restart
thanks

Oh, I don't have any experience with scripts for partitioning. Sorry, GL though.

thank anyway dont feel bad i have only been on a computter for like 1 yr in my hole life.

Well, it would be easer for you to partition if you used a good program called partition magic. It is pretty good, and if you have problems, you can get support.
-
Use a boot/start up disk or partition magic etc.... Remove all partitions. Then set you r two partitions and make the first one the primary. Then put your Win2000 CD in if you can boot from CD if not use the Win2000 setup disks. Install Win2000 to the first (primary) partition. After you install Win2000 and run it. You should be able to see the other partion labeled as drive d: or e: depending on how you have your CD and HDDs set up on your IDE. Then format the second drive from Win2000 with FAT 32. Then install ME. Reason is. Win2000 likes to be in charge and it has the windows bootloader tree as part of it. Then on boot. Win2000 will give you the option of which system to boot to. This is the short an nasty way to do it.

Thanks for the info. But what I am trying to realy do is use Windows Me on both. Can I do that? If not then I guess I will use Win2000 but I realy don't care for it. And if I use partition magic do I have to debug/reformat both drives first?

When you say both. Do you want to use both at the same time. If so no you can't. If you follow my directions you have a choice at boot up to boot to ME or Win2000. Then eveytime you reboot you can either boot to Win2000 or ME. And, no you don't have to format either partition before hand. Just have them set and have the first one as primary/active. Then Win2000 will format the first partition on install then you can format the second partition in Win2000 and then install ME from Win2000 to the second partition.

Thanks for your help. But what I want to realy do use WindowsMe on both drive. Can I do that and if so do I have to debug/reformat both drives. I cant see where it will let me add WindowsMe again to the 2nd drive from the first. And if I use partition do I have to reformat both drives? I like test lots of new stuff but if I mess up I would like to just reformat 1 part of the drive and start over. I have Windows 2000 but it is 1 of them 90 day things. So it is of no use after 90 days if I like it and I sure dont have the money to buy it :( But I do have Win98 and WinME that I can use full time.

even i faced the same problem
i think we can not we have to install the os in an ascending order
ie 95 then 98 then me then xp etc
we cant install a higher version of windows and then a previous version on
the same computer
-
I have WinMe In there now so if I want to put something on the 2nd part I have to reformat and then put it on first? I sure hope not. Like I siad I just want to use the 2nd part for testing programs and other stuff on so it does not matter to me what I put on the 2nd. I have a Win98 disk. I would put the Win2000 disk on there but it is only a 90 try out. And when I did try to put is on there with the WinMe in there first it would let me but it tried to partition out the 2 nd half so in return I would then have 3 partition but I guess I can set the 3rd to real low. Does anyone know of a site that I might can go to, to get partition magic or anything like it?

Read the instructions I gave you very carefully. I've already answered your question. Also if you have the trial version of Win2000, after your trial expires you will only be able to access ME on boot. If you want to switch and swap OS'es then you need to get a program like System Commander or Boot Magic. Then get Partition Magic to manage your partitions.
-
Your debug script zeros out your master boot record,
making the drive appear unformatted to the OS.
Now I still didn't quite get the question.
Are you trying to set up a dual boot
system, to choose between two different
microsoft operating systems?
OK, I re-read your original question and I think I get it.
You want two separate installations of WINME, each on its
own partition, right?
I think the best way to do that is to get System Commander

May i add my 2 cents worth
Using debug to format your h/d you have just made your h/d unstable as you have destroyed
the makers table of bad sectors and skew factors of your h/d
ALL H/D have production errors on them and this is sorted out by doing low level format at the factory
so visit the makers website and down load there disk format tool and run that first
Then follow Apocalypse s advice

I see what you r saying and will try it. Yes I was tring to have it so that when I cut the computter on I get say yes I want to go to part 1 or part 2 and use that OS. I was also thanking if I am going to just use part 2 or test programs i dont see y after 90 is I keep the Win2000 y I cant just reformat and put it back on that part of the disk. But any how Thanks for all the help guys/girls.

I have windows xp(pro) and redhat 7.2 on one drive. I always use fdisk and set up the partitions manually. It sounds like u need a bootloader, but first are u creating two different drives (c: & d: )? If you are one of the operating systems will need a boot disk or cd. If you don't want to boot with a floppy or cd partition the drive and put bootloader in the mbr (master boot record), it will prompt you at the beginning of the boot sequence. I prefer lilo or grub, the only problem with that is that one of the operating systems will have to be some type of linux. If you decide to go that way then the native partitions for linux including the swap sits on a non dos partition. I know this may sound difficult but its not, drop me a line and i will walk you through. Like everything else its a matter of trial and error, tweaking, trial and error again

You need to get a boot loader. Otherwise Win9x operating systems will always want to use the primary drive. Search google for winme boot loader. Or you can create 3 partitions, say 5 gigs, 20 gigs, and 15 gigs. Then install 2000 on one of the larger partitions. Install ME as your "operational" install on the other large partition. Then on the small partition create a Test install of ME. The other solutions provided do not give you your two partitions of winme.
You will want to learn how to edit boot.ini if you are going to use Win2k as your boot loader. Search for info on that as well.
