Banishment question
On another message board, the moderator is supposed to have the power to banspecific computers .
I can understand that the mod can ban a specific IP address, but is it possible to ban a specific computer ? If so, how ??????
BTW, I am at work and didn't get a chance to run a search on this.

well that i know of u can ban IP blocks like as in certain ips form certian ISP's.....so if the person has a dynamic IP it wont matter cuz the IP block is banned
-
It's not very secure, but it was talked about in another area of AO about a "ban cookie" that would be set on the client...of course, any time cookies are deleted it would clear the ban...but it might work for people who don't pay a lot of attention to cookies.
-
well adware would pick up a cookie that would send info out and in and ask to delete them

Hey bucket... Just a little correction: on AO, moderators have no banning-powers at all: JP is the only one able to ban IP's, IP-ranges,... hell, even entire Belgium if he wanted to...
-
That's a good idea, a ban cookie. But like was stated, clearing the cookies would clear the ban. I would like to find out more about this.

entire Belgium.. hmm... :)
-
hehe yea...lets ban countries :P
-
bucket : I dont know if this applys but a specific connection can be decided by MAC address...
-
good point if you could specify a mac add you could ban a nic or modem
Can this be done?

I am all for banning belgium. And take Australia with it. What the hell, if we can ban a country, why not a continent.
About the only way I could see to ban a specific computer is is you banned by the MAC address.

LOL! this is bound to spark some controversy

ofcourse it will :)....that is why it was said.....muhahaa....hey soulman maybe some1 should write up a tutorial on MAC addresses :)
-
You can't ban by MAC address. The MAC address doesn't get passed along through TCP/IP. It's part of the ethernet header. Every router (or other layer 2 device) along the way removes the previous machine's MAC address and inserts it's own MAC address before passing it along. The only MAC address JP's computers should ever see is the MAC address of the router just outside his network. I wish it were possible though.

ban the entire US and about 75% of the users on a0 will be cleared out....so why not? hehe....ban asia, africa, and south america and almost nothing will happen (the only members I've seen from these countrys are 1 asian and 1 african)

A bit about how IP bans work as we all know or at least should an ip addy of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
now most tables work close to the same so in order to ban a specific IP address I would spec ot thew last digits what ever it may be, get a new IP well may not work cause if I add only 0 Zero in the last place anything equal to or above 0 (zero) will not be allowed. Depending upon where I put Zero (0) in the IP range I can go from a specific addy, to addy range, for a specific ISP, to an entire country. Don't think I dial up you cannot be banned cause you can depends on the table, really should learn more about IP tables and how they work. After all to much spam from Asia on my work servers so quess what they are banned their entire IP range and no asking for a new IP is ever going to work..LOL

Uh oh forgot to mention I can make exceptions within and banned IP range also so users that do not abuse the system are allowed to continue..go figure???? How do I know which to make exceptions to not hard called logs I read them know whom business is conducted with and non-ligit and banned users :D
