Finally they wake up and smell the toast burning. I've always thought it hypocritical of the U.S. to 'say' they have seperation of church and state and yet when you testify in court you have swear on a bible....nice seperation folks.
BTW. This only applies to some western states, not all of them.
Good find xmadness. I, personally, do not have a religion (therefore, unsure of whether God truly exists or not). Unlike Ganjica, I don't have a problem with the words "under god" in the pledge of allegiance. Growing up, I just simply did not say the pledge when asked to do so in school. I remember other students as well, who were of different ethnicities, religions, etc. who also refrained from participating. We always stood, as a sign of respect for those who did believe in the pledge, but did not participate. I think it's outrageous that they are deeming it unconstituational. As you said, they'll go after our currency next. Where will we be then? I say, just leave the pledge how it is. Those who don't agree with it, can simply refrain from saying it. Just my opinion, of course.
AJ
EDIT: Ganjica > When testifying in court, you are not required to place your hand on the Bible. It is offered there for you to do so, but simply as a symbol of your pledge to tell the truth. Those who do not believe in the Bible are free to simply place their hand down on the pulpit and raise their right arm to make the pledge.

XMaddness beat me to it... logged in just to post this... here's the article from AIM:
Pledge Ruled Unconstitutional
Personally, I think anyone or any industry that gets hung up or nit-picky over words, is, well... don't they have something better to do? (kind of like cops sitting around, waiting for someone to exceed a 35mph speed like by like 3mph... even at 2am when the streets are completely empty and all the lights stay green)
I must agree that its hypocritical that we have separataton of church and state, but not completely. I find it a little disturbing that I can be forced to swear to a god responsible for so many deaths (Salem Witch Trials, The Crusades) in a court of law, though I won't go into my views on the american legal mess. I wonder how long it will take Jerry Falwell (sp?) to mount a counter offensive claiming the courts to be controlled by the devil and on a road to hell and eternal damnation?
I'll make this short and sweat. I respect everyones beliefs and fully believe they have a right to thier own beliefs.
BUT! And a very big BUT......
If I go to another country they expect me to respect thier beliefs and to addapt. So if they come to this country the same should apply.
In other words.
IF YOU DON'T LIKE THIS COUNTRY OR OUR BELIEFS AND CHOOSE NOT TO RESPECT OUR BELIEFS. YOU ALSO HAVE THE RIGHT TO LEAVE THIS COUNTRY. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Many people have died for this country to be free for one to persue thire own beliefs and to live in freedom. It should remain so.
i agree with p2p. people do need to respect the beliefs of a country whether they agree or not. the belief in god is the most popular religion in the country. this country was established on a god related foundation.
Syini666> God wasn't "responsible" for the Salem witch trials or the crusades. whether you believe he exists or not, you have to realize that both of those instances occur because of peoples ideaas and decisions, these things had nothing to do with god, other then pepole claimed it to be for him. if i commit murder and claim to do it in your name, are you responsible?
{P2P} -
First off, why so pissy? I never said the u.s. sucked or anything even remotely to that effect. I don't mind getting negs, but this is asinine. Since when can anyone dispute the hypocracy of the U.S.? Since when can anyone dispute the hypocracy of any gov't?
BTW-I live in Jamiaca. And with the way you people are behaving I'd just as soon visit Russia then your part of the states. So it's only the gov't that needs to uphold freedom of speech? It's not your personal responsibility? I thought it was everyone responsibility in the u.s. to uphold the basis of what your country was founded on, I must be misinformed.
Thank you all for clarifying this for me.
P.S. Your caps lock is on.
Respecting is different. Respect is very different, like adven said, he stood up, but he didn't recite it. It isn't matter of respect. It is a matter of beliefs.
I hate liberal ****nuts. Let the negs fly! :-P
