Smoke from fires can travel half way across the continent depending on witch way the wind is blowing.
I'm in Quebec, (Montreal area), and the sky is completly covered. You'd think it's just normal clouds but it really is smoke from the fires up north. (There are 10 of em right now, and I think something like 7 are out of control! Water bombers (CL-215/415 can't even fly over because the fire is to strong!). Everything is yellowish outside today because the smoke filters sun rays diffrently than normal clouds (the sun looks like a bright red spot through the smoke...)
Anyways, it is pretty weird!

If you are in the US some of that smoke could also be from the 8 states that currently have forest fires right now as well as Canada. Its kindof scary that there are wildfires all over the place
Sounds weird, kind of like an eclipse I suppose?
8-)
That's really sad, why are there fires? Is it because of the heat? It sounds really magical though, like when I get up in the mornings in Autumn and there's mist rising from the lake near me, looks spooky but brilliant! I want smoky clouds!!

When you burn down half a time zone theres bound to be smoke.
I live in New England as well. I woke up this morning and the sky was orange because of the smoke. Yesterday the smoke put my towns fire department into a frenzy of confusion because they thought there was a fire in the town, until they got word that the smoke was from Canada.

Wonderful Phenomenon?
Living in an area that is constantly under threat of fire I can assure you that it's no "wonderful phenomenon".....
i meant the fact that there was almost no sun when i woke up... at first i thought i might be in alaska ;).
Like half of Colorado is on fire, it smells like a wood stove everywhere, I heard on the radio that it's going to take a rain of biblical proportions to get the plants back to the right amount of moisture.
Yeah that really sucks about those fires in the colorado/arizona area. I dont know much about the ones in the north/northeast. Im sure it would be cool to see the sun through the smoky clouds though.
Lightning strikes are a common cause of forest fires. I live in Saskatchewan, Canada and we have tons of forest fires up north. Many towns have been evacuated. A large portion of the province is under a fire ban.
The drought conditions here are amazingly bad. Many places have had no rain in months.
It is a terrible shame that so much forest land is being destroyed by fire. Not just here but anywhere that is suffering from forest fires.
Although it can damage property, any fire occuring away from inhabited areas is a healthy and natural thing for the forest. Fires have been happening for millenia without anyone intervening, and the ecosystem is actually pretty well adapted to it. In most cases, fires that don't threaten homes are left to burn. (For an example of what happens when you don't, look at yellowstone.)Quote:

I live in Pennsylvania (down near the lower half, close to Harrisburg). We were supposed to be having our fireworks show last night (Sunday, 7 July) and they were cancelled until (maybe) tonight because of teh smoke from the canadian fires. While I was a little upset about the cancellation, I am more unhappy about the fires themselves. Having worked as a firefighter, I know first hand the damage that fires can cause. My condolences to teh canadians for the rough time they are going through.
I just saw a VERY interesting documentary (PBS I believe) that theorized that the increasing amount of wildfires raging out of control is because they aren't allowed to burn themselves out on a regular basis as would happen naturally. In a normal state, these fires start, burn for a bit, and then go out. Because that isn't allowed to happen most of the time, the amount of underbrush that is growing is rampant, and when a big fire does get started, it has so much fuel that it can't be controlled.Quote:

No, actually it's not IMO. We aren't this year, but Florida has had its share of wildfires, and about 4 years ago, I was evacuated from my home twice in a month because of wildfires. We had smoke for weeks, and it is eerie, it causes health problems, and is very depressing.Quote:

That's not really funny, but it made soda come out my nose when I read it....smartass! LOLQuote:

Deb :D
I have several friends in canada ,and one sends me pictures of canada. It's the most beautiful country i've ever seen from what the pictures show me,hate to think anything could ruin such a beautiful place. One of my friends in AZ. lost her home to the fires at showlow. The forestry people say fires are a nessasary thing ,but most were started by bad people. But living in Texas like i do ,we usually have our 'drought" season, this year it's been floods.Mother nature is awsom.
The fires in northen Quebec are mostly anyoying because of the smoke only... You know, almost nobody lives that high in the province. It's just mostly wild forest. There are a few small towns but for now none are in danger. So as far as effects on civilisation, the worst is lost of revenu for the wood industry :/
