Donated Blood Today
I just donated blood this afternoon. Had Lunch at 11:30 Dontated at 12:45 got back in the office at 1:45. If I was smart and came in at 6:30 this morning. I would be able to go home, but I'm stuck here until 5:00. Does anyone else frequently donate blood?
-
I'm too young to do it anyway, but even if I wasn't there's no way I'd be able to donate blood... I get sick at any form of knowing that my body is not in its regular state. It's odd, like, I had surgery on my knee recently, and beforehand they were supposed to take blood, but I refused to let them. Umm, so, I had my surgery w/o doing that. After the surgery, like two weeks later, I had to go have my stitches taken out, and when I did just feeling them taking them out of my leg made me sick and I totally passed out. I'm a panzy when it comes to that stuff. I can't count the number of times I've passed out at the doctor's office from something so simple.
-
Yup, every time I donate, I make an appointment for the next time, so I don't put it off. That way I donate every 8(?) weeks, and it's all good. I have O+ blood, so mine is very helpful, because it's the only type that any blood type can accept.
Deb :D

I'm not laughing at you, but it reminds me of the first time I donated. I passed out from the smell, but I got ragged so bad. I had to prove everyone I wasn't scared or faked it, and I have been doing it every since...

I am also O+

lmao Prankster, nice catch.
-
LOL!!! that is funny. i've always thought you had to upload blood.
you know, i'm not even sure what me blood type is... have to find out.
they will tell you when you donate right? i never have before, but i suppose i should.
i just recently had me locks cut off (went down to the small of me back) and had them donated to cancer kids to make wigs. there is something about giving a part of yourself to somebody else. very taoist.
-
I didn't catch that Prankster.... Your on top of things alright...
-
i think i'm going to donate blood. i heard that the red cross is running low on its supply the only problem is that i'm about to go out of town and i dont want to be anemic for my plane ride
-
I'm suprised at how few people really donate. I am the ONLY one from my office that donated blood today, and from our conversation at lunch, when I mentioned I will be donating after lunch. I don't think anyone in my office has EVER dontated.
-
i cant give blood, it makes me pass out ... lol

NetSyn
Do you eat before you donate?
-
ive donated a couple times (o+) here as well. The first time i donated, I was dieting for wrestling for my high school, i think i weighed all of 110 punds at the time, so to make a long story short, i passed out on the table. The scary part was, nobody was monitoring me cause there were like 20 kids in there. I eventually woke up X seconds/minutes later with blood still squirting out of me into the plastic bag. I almost passed out again at the cookie/juice table - It was surreal to watch the blackness slowly envelop you and be cognicent of it.
you would think that after that experience I would steer clear of any blood bank, but I know it is for a good cause, and my blood is needed. After all, my little brother almost died cause he got thrown out of a window and severed his major artery and nerve endings in his arm (my older brother and he were fighting). So without a blood transfusion, he could have died. Not to add any more personal information to the story (why am i doing this anyway?) my mother was a jehovahs witness at the time - and she was dead set against blood transfusions as proscribed by the church. That however was until this accident. I guess she had a moment of clarity and realized her son was more important than her religious tenants. She no longer practices Jehovahs Witness BTW.

Used to
My mother was an avid donor and on my 18th birthday I donated my first pint. Donated regularly for three gallons worth until two things happened:
1) Foreign trip to 3rd world country no donating allowed for three years.
2) before 3 years High Blood pressure, when under control will donate again.
Blood Type A+
BTW Just a note, O+ in not the universal donor O- is. Negative RF factors cannot accept + donations safely, while + can accept -.
Still O+ is close and there are a lot more O+ than O-
So I can use your blood, but you can't have mine HAHAHHAHAHAAHAH :)
One last thing to those who don't donate. Consider it, it helps others, it doesn't hurt much, and it is good for you too since it stimulates your blood replacement cells and helps to keep your bone marrow rejuvenated.
-
I'm sorry, but if your mother had choosen religion over her son. I would have thought that would be one of the sickest stories I have ever heard. I can't believe there are people that are so caught up in their religion, they would let a love one go for religion. That is too much for me.
Bombay....
Good to hear the story end on a positive note. Wish the best for you & yours.
Soda.....
your lucky I'm a nice person or I wouldn't share with you.... J/K
Nice point made on the end of your POST.... thank you...

I try to donate blood as much as I can because they seem to always be in need of my type of blood. A+
-
What is the rarest blood type? I think my grandfather was AB+ or something like that.
Some Information for Everyone....
If two different blood types are mixed together, the blood cells may begin to clump together in the blood vessels, causing a potentially fatal situation. Therefore, it is important that blood types be matched before blood transfusions take place. In an emergency, type O blood can be given because it most likely to be accepted by all blood types. However, there is still a risk involved.
A person with type A blood can donate blood to a person with type A or type AB. A person with type B blood can donate blood to a person with type B or type AB. A person with type AB blood can donate blood to a person with type AB only. A person with type O blood can donate to anyone.
A person with type A blood can receive blood from a person with type A or type O. A person with type B blood can receive blood from a person with type B or type O. A person with type AB blood can receive blood from anyone. A person with type O blood can receive blood from a person with type O only.
Because of these patterns, a person with type O blood is said to be a universal donor. A person with type AB blood is said to be a universal receiver.
another note....
While studying Rhesus monkeys, a certain blood protein was discovered. This protein is also present in the blood of some people. Other people, however, do not have the protein. The presence of the protein, or lack of it, is referred to as the Rh (for Rhesus) factor.
If your blood does contain the protein, your blood is said to be Rh positive (Rh+). If your blood does not contain the protein, your blood is said to be Rh negative (Rh-).

Rarest
There is no real rarest blood type because medical science is locating people with unique blood types every so often. I know I have heard of a Type T which is very rare and not unique, I do not know if it the rarest, non-unique, or not. I do believe it would suck to have a unique blood type.
If memory serves me the order goes
O, A, B, AB of the common types. You can donate to any type right of yours and receive from any type left of yours. Keep in mind though, as stated previously, RH- can donate to RH+ without danger, RH+ cannot donate to RH- without problems. This is one of the reasons why a pregnant woman with RH- blood can have a baby with RH+ blood but unless given a certain shot she develops an antibody to the RH+ blood type and is likely to damage any other fetus that has an RH+ blood type. This commonly leads to Rhesus Syndrome or vulgarly called Mongoloidism.
Now, maybe we should discuss how to hack into the bloodbank :D J/K
BTW, went to the Doc yesterday, BP is under control (the marvels of modern chemicals) and the medicine does not prohibit me from donating, so I will be down there soon.

According to the Federation Gaming Network's Federal Encyclopaedic System the Medical: Physiology: Blood Type (T-Negative) is a Rare Vulcan blood type.
(that is the only information I could find on Type T Blood.)
If you can provide some legit information on this subject. I would like to see it.
-
I used to donated regularly until the doctors found something nasty in me, chopped it out gave me a pile of type O neg points and put me on the banned list for 5 years ..... couple of years to go and when the all clear is given the vampires can go back to work again on me .....
We get time off work to donate :) ...... I do miss the break from work and the coffee and biscuits afterwards.

People should be left to die. Do you see animals donating blood to others in their species so they can live? What are humans? Oh... I forgot we are superior to animals because our intellegence level surpasses theirs, or maybe animals intellegence surpasses humans and the humans are just too stupid to realize it?
but its all good just a matter of time before everything is gone. Thank's to the intellegence of human beings.
-
Animal Hospitals do engage in blood transfusions.
-
I'm talking about animals willfully seeking to help one another. Other than the fact they can't most have little interest in it expect for saving themselves. Giving a situation where its one person or another the person would always choose himself, but the animals have no choice but to live that way. We however have thought it distastefull to live like animals we have exempt ourselves from their rules and installed our own thus going against the way things really should be.

He's Right
You're Right Fakeboy, my reality and Sci Fi circuits got cross linked. Type T is a rare Vulcan blood tha Sarek and Spock both had, that is why Spock had to donate blood during Sarek's operation in the Episode "Journey to Babel".
Dang, I hate it when reality invades my fantasy. :D
-
I looked it up because in my previous post where I identified the Blood Type Circle it wasn't mentioned, and if it was a blood type. I was wondering how it actually fit into the circle.
-
I'm didn't realize the difference between O+ and O-. Well, I knew there was a difference, but I didn't realize the point that Soda made. So now I know more.
And Soda, I'm really thinking of telling them the next time I donate blood that anyone in the world BUT YOU can have it...lol. You're weird!
/me wanders off mumbling about Vulcans and weirdo blood types.....
Deb :D
-
deb, did you read the post about blood types & rh factors I posted? Interesting information..
here is an added visual for you guys...

A few of my cube-mates go to donate quite frequently. I can not. One, because I have a recent tattoo. Two because needles just about make me pass out. Yes I am a 6'2" 290+- lb man, and needles scare the piss out of me.
-
Yes I give as regularly as I can :) A+
-
Me Weird
Now Debwalin said I am weird, and I don't deny it. However I am not so weird that I am afraid of needles yet I get a tatoo, that weirdness award goes to Papagrande :p
-
AB Monkey Negative here.
I give blood as often as I remember, and i'm also a plasma donor.
It's good to see just how many people donate blood, and equally good to see just how many would if they could. As for the animals comment, does that mean i can lick my own ass in public too? (Animals do)
just my 10c/p

The worse experience was, when I had a request to donate bone merrow to a cancer patient. I don't know if I had a bad experience as when you leave after donating blood and your whole arm bruises, but when I donated marrow. It was the most painful experience, and I just didn't feel right after that experience. The thing is I didn't even know the person, my Doctor requested that I do so, and to be honest. I thought it was the right thing to do. I may be hesitant if the request comes up again, but to be honest. I would probably do it. I would hope someone would do the same for me.
Papagrande,
Tattoo's are indeed addictive. I know so many people who have an addiction to tattoos, but if you mention needles. It is like they are going to cry like a 5 y/o.

I think it's great that alot of the members here at AntiOnline donate their blood. :)
-
Is it better to eat before? I'm only recently able to donate and haven't done it yet.
-
I donate blood often and have also joined the BONE MARROW DONOR REGISTRY here in Australia.
It was a 5 minute test just as they do for blood type testing..5 small vials of blood is takin while you donate your regular blood and a record of your marrow is kept on file for any person who has Luekemia. When a match is made they call you in for 1 day in hospital (All expenses paid) for small procedure..(blood transfer).
If you can save a person while your alive..It makes a differance!!
[pong]DONATE BLOOD AND JOIN A REGISTRY FOR BONE MARROW[/pong]
-
CrankyGirl,
If you do not eat before you go, 1 of two things may happen. You iron count may be low, and you will not be able to donate, or you may pass out. Always eat something healthy before you go, and try to drink alot of water before you go.
-
I cant give blood either, i have something with me that when i give blood i pass out and go into seizures...but if i was able to donate blood, i would do it with out a problem
-
Just wanna say THANK YOU to everyone who's donated. Coupla years ago I had a transient blood disorder and had to have transfusions of various blood products, so I am very appreciative.
-
I try to make sure that I donate on a reguar basis. I get calls and reminders in the mail all the time. I am O-, so according to the previous posts, you can understand why they might be after me. I have donated blood since high school, and lately, my job has been conducting blood drives every 60 days or so. I wasn't able to give for a bit due to some major surgery I had done on two occasions in the last year and a half, but since the last hospital visit, I have already donated even though it was just this past May that I had the surgery again. I donated against the advice of everyone around me, of course. I had the Red Cross clear it so I could. Since we are sharing stories...surprisingly enough, the CEO of the company for which I work sent me an admirational email about how he was so inspired by my gesture. I just told him the truth; I felt compelled to donate since blood is so precious and necessary (especially O- from what they have been telling me all these years). You never know; you may be the one on the operating table one day in need of a few units of blood. So, that said, I will give blood until I no longer can.
Peace good people.
