Who are you getting the file from?
nooooooooooooooo dont , if its so important get them to link you to a mirror, or for them to put it up on thier webserver (if they have one)
with file sharing in irc, you give out your ip address.
lmao or do you mean the java plugins??? for ppl such as yahoo or antionline?

The reason I asked this,I noticed a post on computer chat by someone who calls himself raven. If I'm not mistaken there was something about this raven in some posts here that was not favorable. What caught my eye was this person asked that you disable several things on your computer,I may be a newbie but this does not sound right, have downloaded many things and never had to disable anything. My main question is how do tell if a chat room is safe or is it just a gamble?Thank You
common sence, and a open mind to how others can try social engineering techiques for you to lower your defences, dont disable anything dont download anything unless your chattign to your mother, even then i wouldnt be so sure :P
BTW:what did he want you to disable?
this seems like a very bad attempt at social engineering, for him to give you a Trojan horse or a Virus , but if you dont know this person you have no reason to trust him, and lower your defences.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm let me see
This is how a conversation with me would have gone.
them:- please install this, and that, and disable your AV protection
me:- NO
anything that requires your AV protection to be switched off is a NO NO (even if you know them)
Regards
chances are bud that its a virus. Maybe even a botnet virus. Very likely. Don't accept file from people you don't know.
DALnet had stopped the transfer of executable files because of so many people downloading viruses.
Hi bofhandpfy,Gurl,Viper thank you replying.
IRC is known for backdoor viruses. The file is most likely a trojan server file that by downloading and opening, you will be installing a trojan program onto your computer. Once the trojan program is installed, the hacker has your IP address from your IRC name/address and will be able to enter your computer and take control. And to know that it asks you to disable your antivirus program it is obviously a virus or trojan server file.
No sense in worrying about that because as soon as you logon to an IRC server, people can find out your IP address unless you are using a proxy. Also, never download files people just hand over to you, especially if the file is under 2 kb. Most of those are trojans, for example in some of the more popular dalnet channels, people will send files that are .exe but have a .txt icon, you have to be very careful. If the file is large, and is something you would like to see, just download a virus scanner, make sure the definitions are up to date, and scan the file. BTW I made a tutorial about IRC safety you may be interested in, http://www.antionline.com/showthread...hreadid=231350Quote:

I have not read this post to its entity, Remember though in IRC when you send a file its a direct link. Just like if you used Kazaa or AIM to send a file. IRC does not scan for viruses, you are exposing yourself to possible viruses. As with email only accept files from people you know and trust. Also, IRC clients have been known to get viruses per say and auto-send stuff to people without the infected person knowing. Usually someone in IRC will tell you if they are going to send you something first.
Hi Ryan Nyquist, khakisrule,Louie thanks for replies. The tutorial helped. How do you connect to anti-online chat? I get these 2 messages:Connect to our irc server using your favorite client:irc anti-online.com port 6667,also !!!Couldn't establish connection to irc.anti-online.com port 6667.Any suggestions? Thanks again.
The server is down right now
lodebare > The IRC server is down right now, though no one's sure whether it's schedule maintenance or something else. See the thread below to keep abreast of the situation:

Alot of trojans/viruses for IRC are being spread through Kazaa, iMesh, WinMX, etc. So, just be in caution when you open executable files. It might help to scan, but most IRC virii can't be detected. Sorry fellas.
um. no. hang on let me think about it again. no. never.
Hi Louie,avdven,Viper,KrazyMike1978 thanks for replies, the info about the server solves that problem. Thanks again.
