A small gripe about the IRC

Ok, so I'm in the AO IRC channel and various subjects are being tossed here and there...

Someone's not getting the concept of C programming so I'm helping them out (well, at least I'm banging away on the keyboard to break down the program) and someone says 'can we stop this C class now or take it to somewhere else?'.

Now, I don't know about anyone else, but seeing as I'm not much of an IRC person anyways, this doesn't do anything to make me want to sit around in a channel where I've seen all kinds of other subjects from DNA/gene splicing to the very-detailed sex talks to politics/death row/etc...I thought this was a security/computer-related IRC channel linked to a computer-related/security website? Maybe I'm wrong...

*shakes head* Hopefully something can be done about this...I'm not too aware of the ops and their schedules but I heard there's a meeting somewhere on this stuff.

Okay, so I've never been to the AO IRC channel. That being said, as a frequenter of other IRC networks, I think the problem was not your choice of subject matter per se, but the fact that programming help requires a lot of long pastes to the channel and a two-person dialogue that excludes pretty much everybody automatically. Certain things just need to be moved to private messages.

I agree with that Fryth, but we're talking four lines of code, hence four lines of text, each one with a definition of what that line meant in () right after the code. Others have put THOUSANDS more words into that channel not even relating to anything computer-oriented. That and the topic for this 'Hello world' wasn't just limited to me, but others were in it too. I just happened to be the one doing the explaining.

That DNA/gene splicing thing got out of hand :)

I think a lot of topics can get out of hand but it just seems to me that we should kind of sorta stay on topic, that being computers and network security.
There are plenty of other channels out there on many different servers catering to a whole bunch of needs..if someone wants to go off topic, there is a place for it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating cleaning out the channel just staying somewhat near topic. :)

i agree 100% vorlin - i almost hated going to AO IRC for a long period of time because usually u do get treated like a idiot there no matter what.... If u werent one of their regulars they talked down to u a lot and made u feel like u didnt belong. There were many times where i stoped going and then came back and i still dont feel very confy there and i get kicked and banned for doing a lot of things that a lot of their friends do and dont get kicked and banned for... I think its run pretty bad and really needs some fresh new ops or rules and regulations for the ops to follow to make it run a little more user friendly....

Considering it IS supposed to be a computer/security/programming channel...I'd say if you're talking about something else, and it gets interrupted by someone who is talking about computers...maybe the OTHER convo should go private, not the computer one.

I'm not advocating that IRC be only computers....You guys all know I go in there mostly to BS with others...but it is supposed to be a computer channel, and personally when people start talking about things like that, I try to be quiet and not interrupt most of the time.

I dont personally like Quad... At all... But i know he is a asset to the irc channel and without him there probly would be no irc channel to be run... or a lot less users there.

Quad has given me problems on IRC in the past but its sumthing ive just learned to ignore and put myself above. I just think there should be a lines the ircops and ops cannot cross to inssure fairness on the server and more user friendly enviroment... It isnt THEIR channel its the AO community's channel in my opinion... They may run it but without us all they are running is a empty ircD with no purpose.

Personnaly, I'm getting very bored with the conversations in #AO.. Everything always ends up in sex talk or other non-computer related subjects... I mean, AO is about computer security, why not spawn another permanent channel for divers conversations and keep #AO for computers/security conversations instead of having to do the reverse...

Ammo, with all due respect, I think that if you start a convo about something computer related, you'll get a lot of feedback. You can't just lurk, and then complain because you don't like what's being talked about. It's like the forums, if you don't like what you're reading, try posting something new and different!

Yeah well, from experiance, it usually gets drowned away in the ohter conversations...
And besides, I don't consider myself a lurker: I listen, when someone has a relevent question or comment, I try to reply, if I have something intelligent to say about it. When I have a relevent question or comment, I ask. Just because I'm not talking all the time about all the blah blah blah doesn't make me a lurker. At least not IMHO.

Ok I admit it I’m a total lurker. If I don't have anything to say I don't say it.

It’s kind of unfair to single out the DNA conversation. Even if it was off topic it was still much more interesting then senseless ramblings that so often occur on irc.

Keep Quad, He does a good job. Latley I've noticed Juridian showing control in the IRC and I completely back him up also. Plain and simple, the sex stuff has to go somewhere else. That is what the #chat channel was created for. I have also noticed that alot of debates tend to take place and that also tends to interupt computer topics. I'm not saying debating a topic is bad in anyway, I rather enjoy it, but I think that it should be taken to #debate. There you can freely input your thoughts without other people that arn't interested complaining and throwing out stupid comments just to be seen. Remember, IRC can have more than just one channel. Once people learn to join a channel that is appropriate for the conversations they are having, there won't be any more problems. I look at the main #antionline channel as the main meeting place, and once you get into a conversation, move it to the appropriate channel(s). I agree that the IRC has gotten out of hand in the past, but I have also noticed that the Ops have been taking steps to rid the channels of that. I think we are in a period of transformation of the IRC and I like what I'm seeing so far. Not everyone likes change, granted, but it is needed regardless. Just my $.02

The sex talk is coming to and end for the most part. People are getting told to take that to pm, another channel, or another server.

The DNA conversation did carry on for a bit, but that eventually was ended and the people involved were told to take it to another channel if they wanted to keep at it.

The main channel is getting cleaned up. Now if people aren't talking about something that interests you, then bring something up. If that doesn't work, then find a different way to bring it up that gets people interested. The people there aren't here to babysit you and keep you interested....so if you aren't actively participating and no one is talking about what you want then tough.

Some of the people complaining about the ops, well I've seen some of you in the channel and I know at some of the reasons why there is friction. Illegal hacking questions, people with huge 'I'm 1337' egos, or giving attitude that they don't need to be get flamed ALOT. Now I now that not everyone who get's flamed does that, and some people get flamed that probably shouldn't but that is something that is getting worked on. There are also some 'regulars' who need to chill out with their attitudes....

Mah last gripe is for the c conversation. There was a large group of people helping someone with some c code and a couple of people who were using the main channel for a basically two way convo got annoyed. Ummm...tough. Take the two way convo to pm. I should have said that at the time, but I had short people buggin me for food.

Thought I would hit the IRC and just watch what everyone was talking about. I was a little surprised to see as much "off topic" as I saw.

I'm not "boring" enough to think that ALL that get discussed it networking/security... this is a community and of course the topic is going to stray. People are going to have fun, talk about what they want (happy, sad, angry, lewd, frustrated etc...).

But I'd hate to get "pushed out" of a chat channel just because I brought up something on topic. As it is, it takes a little courage to talk with you all when I'm a newbie.

And a little courage to post ! :(

hmm im sorry to hear that Vorlin.. thats an odd situation really.. being in IRC myself we all love to talk about computers and computer security.. only when we are all bored and got nothing to say when we start talking about something else..

hmm... i'd tell that d00d off if i were there.. after all AO IRC is a good way to discuss some computer and security related stuff.. i dunno maybe these things happen when im not around but usually when someone needs help in things we try to help them as much as we can.. sometimes its a downfall coz there are 3 ppl talking about thesame topic but very inconsistant.. one example was when Lady_Haxor asked some help with her FTP and me and another member (sorry if i didnt remember u d00d) even ended up arguing about some concepts.. and no one stoped us.. GreekGoddess needed help in her C Compiler and we all helped and as usual ended up arguing about some things... well its more like debating than arguing.. coz we didnt end up calling eachother names.. lol

so in brief.. what u said quite surprised me.. but after all it is IRC.. and anything can happen in there..

Well, I too have jumped to another channel because of the pointless irrelevant chatter going on in #antionline.

I was helping Redgore with some firewall config stuff, and it was just impossible to hold a conversation about technology because of the mindless chatter. Being a chanop, I was tempted to mute the channel, but instead I decided red and I should hop on over to #security to discuss it there.

I personally dislike the amount of bull***t going about IRC lately, and especially what's happened in the last couple of days. I don't run the show, I just help try and keep the channel tidy, so I have little say in how things work in the IRC channel.

Perhaps there should be more then just one channel with a bot. Something that logs the channel and etc so when disputes arise it can be resolved easier and more effectively. Negative also brought up a good idea about creating a channel that ops and opers join when they are around so people can go in there and say a problem they are having w/ another user etc.

I think all these are great ideas and hope that the ops and opers in IRC choose to implement some of these.

Heh....I wonder if DALNET or EFNET get hit with so much nonsense. I agree the chat gets off-topic, quite frequently I might add. But then again, talking 24/7 about computers and security is equally lame.

Even the most hard core nerds need a break from the bits and the bytes. And just in case people havent noticed, AO has become a "community" and is no longer a cut-n-dry security site. Just like any site it must evolve or die.

I appreciate the support of the people who have posted in favor of me not being "fired" (laughs). Since most people who want to see me go, have never OP/OPER'd any IRC channel and have no idea the ammount of BS dealt with on a daily basis. It's an easy thing to bitch and moan from the sidelines.

I think that all the ops and opers should be removed. Make JP run the channel as a full time job. Then, what he says goes....

Ok, what kind of nonesence is this. So it gets off topic sometimes, big deal. A few lines is no big deal. If you want to hold a more indepth conversation about something non-computer related topic (ie DNA splicing, sex, whatever), start a new channel. If you don't know how ask someone. There is already a channel called #chat for any long irrelevant topics you want to discuss.

If it is an indepth discussion about a computer topic that only affects 1 or two people, it may be best to start another channel also. I don't care how to write the hello world program in perl. But to some people, it might be interesting, so announce you are going to explain it, then start the channel. It will be like mini-classes like hogfly is trying to get started.

If you have a tech question, don't be affraid to ask it. A lost of people come in and just say "can I ask a question?" Of course you can, just ask it. Sometimes it gets missed, then tell an op that you got a question you want to ask, or ask them. Most of the ops know who knows what, and will either make sure that you get the question asked, or direct you to someone that knows the answer. If you are afraid of the ops for some reason, ask me if I am around. Most of the ops don't really like me ;) but if someone is on that can help you, I will let you know. But make sure you read what is written afterwords. Someone asked a question earlier today, and both Hogfly and myself answered it twice. They then repeated the question a third time. That gets really anoying.

And if you have real problems with the ops/opers, get over it. There are other servers out there. The people that are ops/opers are there for a reason. If a lot of people have a problem with a certain op/oper, then bring it up in a tactful way, and support you complaint. Don't just say xxxx should be fired. That means nothing. You will not get results unless you get support from other people, and for an oper, you need a lot of support.

Vorlin: I feel your pain, yes subjects do tend to get buried in **** in IRC. especially good ones.
however, With there being only one registered channel on the server, it is kind of hard to keep it on technical chat at all times. people do get 'off-topic' ( if there ever is one) and people tend to blab about nosensical things.
A simple fact of our IRC is that we do not have enough regular visitors to increase the amount of registered channels. So what do you get ? a melting pot of conversations in one channel.
A solution ? you can create your own channel to have a chat to talk about a specific topic. the #security channel is a good place for that too.
I apologize for you having to deal with that on the rare occasion you do join us. It is IRC and it is a general chat channel, its really hit or miss in there. sometimes it can be tech, other times who knows what.

To the rest of you who have problems, address them with me. I will do what I can to make #antionline better for people.

Let me just say one thing. If people really wanted to improve irc and its amount of technical chat, they could send me an outline to teach a class(just one of many things that can be done). Otherwise, all people are doing is bitching without action. Its like not voting, then complaining about who the president is.
