whats the best AV to use?
NORTON!! Norton has a nice interface, has lots of AV updates for any new viruses that come out. It offers the rescue disks to help with viruses that the GUI version can't handle. It can offer you full time protection and all you'll see is a little icon on the taskbar. Plus you get 600 days of free updates, thats really useful. And norton AV was also cnet's pick for AV software. It beat out other major competitors including McAfee AV.
Its realy a personal choice, lots of people throw down the cash and get a full featured program like McAfee or Norton, while others (myself included) either don't want to pay, or as in my case don't have the money to afford the higher end program, and settle for free antivirus like Inocculate (don't think I spelled it right, but i never used it before either) or AVG.
I like avg becasue its free. Plus it does almost everything the big budget virus scanners do.
I use Norton along with the Cleaner for my Windows partition. >shrug< It really depends on how much $$ you are willing to spend.
well what if you have to choose between McAfee and Norton AV? which will me tha best?
I have never used McAffee before, but I hear it is OK. I have used Norton for many years and has served me well. The bottom line is, no AV is perfect. As long as it works, and you update it, then you should be OK.
norton is hands down the best at detecting viruses in the wild...
i used Trend PC-cillin before, but now im using NAV, you can download the virus def. anytime and much faster compare to other AV.
Khakisrule, i thought it was only a 365 days free virus def. download.
I dunno, I use 2001 'cause I have win95. I just checked out my sister's laptop which runs NAV corp. and NAV personal because I use that NAV personal as a backup in case I need to reinstall a specific file. It is 365 days on her laptop, looks like my NAV is a little screwy, corrupted I guess. Ah well, I'm not going to complain. But to those who say McAfee is good, and then admit they haven't used it, not just in this thread but in others like this, I say HA! Just advocate NAV, we need to keep it afloat. I mean, bastardass pirates rip off NAV all the time, and though sometimes priated software is needed, for products I find really helpful, or very useful, and/or very nice I buy them. I want to support the companies that make good software, and that includes MS. BTW McAfee told me they use NAV on all their comps. j/k.
Piracy will always be around. To reduce my paranoia, I buy products that have to paid for. That way, I have tech support, etc. If I cannot afford it (even nice), I say it's nice to want or save up for it. Of all the useless crap I buy everyday, putting a few bucks a side every week will get me that little disk with the warm fuzzy feeling I did the right thing. That's just me; if others feel they wanna "borrow" stuff, oh well...Quote:

Like khakisrule said, you will not go wrong with NAV.
I know piracy will be around all the time. And I have used pirated software, either because I hate the maker, or because I need an old program to work with my win95 and the maker doesn't offer it anymore. But there are somethings that MUST be supported, like NAV. I wish THEY would put in some protection for their software, because, they make such a great program that it bothers me to see it ripped off. They're a good company that makes good software, and so I hope others will understand my point of view and buy Norton products as well. And as for the piraters, without buyers, you would have nothing to pirate as the companies wouldn't make their software.

Norton or Mcafee, But dont use both on the same computer at the same time, its prolly some advertising but Norton detects McAfee as a virus and McAfee detects Norton as one :)

I use NAV corp edition. Does anyone use Panda Anti-virus? They always seem to have a fix for most viruses so i want to know if it is better than NAV.
Trust me, nothing beats NAV, especially not panda. Panda's free AV is weak, do they still offer that free AV thing? I dunno, but NAV offers frequent live updates and has a great site with really useful information of different viruses.

We use NAV Corp Edition. It works very well. I think the most important thing is not wether or not you use NAV, or Fred's antivirus, but that you keep the patern files up to date.

I did a search for previous threads on this question, and I would just like to say. It looks like Norton has won everytime.
I am NAV all the way but with my experience with their live update half of the time it is worthless and will refuse to update the software. But then half of the time it will it depends on which of my computers it is on. My desktop it is fine but my laptop it is worthless.Quote:

I have been able to use both NAV (at home) and McAfeeAV (at work) and from what I have noticed, there is a significantly higher performance hit with using McAfee as opposed to NAV.
Other than that, I don't really see an advantage to using either or.
Depending on what you will be installing it on I recommend Trend Micro for networks and workstations. I find Norton a resource hog.
For a home computer anything that offers regular updates will do.

yes these are less advertised thatn macafee and nortans but dont think that they must be crap because you have not heard of them
in my opinion nortans and sophos are the worst money can buy (u guys arn't serious about acctully paying money for software are u)
