Movies
Hey,
Im writing a paper on the popular opinion of hackers in the media from the eighties to the present, and I was wondering what movies you would suggest. Preferably they would give some insight into the ideology of hacking but on the other hand, I dont really want to watch any boring ones. Just reply with any computer based movies you liked. Thanks
-
well hackers, enemy of the state, the net,the kevin mitnick story, swordfish, just a few that i can think of.
-
Yeah, Hackers is a good one, and check out "War Games" i think that one is pretty cool too.
-
Do not forget Tron! Back in the 80's.
That is what i call a good movie realted to the issue.
Good luck and do not forget to share your paper when it's done.
-
yes, but you have to realize that none of these movies accurately reflect hackers ( well, that's just my opinion)
-
You think so cyb3rn3tik?
My view of a hacker is a person that enforces knowledge over systems and that stands for information freedom.
Tron for example, shows a couple of programmers entering into Master control to disable it as it was dominating the information. Of course it is my opinion.
Any how you have a good point, maybe i should review mine, well...... maybe not.
I need a beer any how.
Good night!! (night for me at least)

hmmm...never seen tron, sorry (sacriligeous, i know). But i know that Hackers has a lot of bad acting and repeated cruddy special effects (i still like it, though :) ). Also in Swordfish.......those people have no idea wtf they're talking about. And some of the stuff is completely wrong (pay attention to the jargon and cpu screens). Enemy of the state is good.
-
Agree with you cyb3rn3tik (having a beer now ;-)
Swordfish should NOT be taken seriously at all. Just good action!
-
If it's media in general, how about literature? Gibson writes a damn good story. Neuromancer and Count Zero are very good examples of hacker incarnations. If your not into long stories, check out Burning Chrome. It's a collection of short stories and the last one in it(actually called Burning Chrome) is very good!

Thanks for the help guys...
As to (some of) the movies not actually portraying realism, thats ok. Its more the perception of hackers in popular culture thats more important than reality. Thx bquine, i've already got a couple books but ill look at the ones you suggest.
Thanks again

You may also want to check out the following thread, where nearly all of the "hacker" movies I've ever seen or even heard of were discussed. There are __ posts, and granted, some movies were mentioned more than once, but there's a great deal of information to be found there. Hope it helps.

I seem to remember a book called "Cyberia" check it out.

Remeber to try a search prior to posting a topic you think may have been covered before. You don't want to get negged for being annoying.
and here is my input on your question...
Contact the 2600 "www.2600.com" for a copy of Freedom Downtime. Their version of the Kevin Mitnick Story. There is also a the Movie "TakeDown" which is also the Kevin Mitnick Story.
There is also of course:
WarGames, Office Space, Password: Swordfish, AntiTrust, Hackers, Sneakers, etc.....
-
a few that were not mentioned
dreiundzwanzig, a german hacker movie
Ghost in the Machine
and found an intersting link about the hacker movie site getting hacked:

For me, the movie "Hackers" does a good job exposing some of the real hacker traits and interests, mostly having to do with the hacker sub-culture.

The perception of 'hacking' has taken a dramatic shift in the past 2 decades...
Number one "hacker" movie is probably "Wargames"...I mean honestly, how many people can utilize Hayes commands and put their phone the cradle anymore...and actually do something with it? Not to mention working in a text-only environment (Linux users have an advantage here)...
Otherwise, the perception of 'hackers' and 'crackers' and such are skewed by modern users who can't even REMEMBER a life without a computer in it. There was such a time, trust me, when a computer meant a big, clunky piece of machinery that would be easily overshadowed by the chipset in a gaming console nowadays...
The only thing that hasn't changed is the desire in some people to dig into the workings of any system, beit digital or analog, and understand exactly how it works...and perhaps exploit it...
Those that expect things and use them with no attention to how all of it came about are lost to the generation, IMO. Use, use, use without understand, understand, understand is profoundly ignorant...
Oh, wait...movies...ummm....TRON is a good one, too...:) The Matrix, although a good movie in itself, just plays on the expectations of the ignorant.

I agree with cyb3rn3tik. I thought those movies were at best "weak" and with the lone gunmen on the x-files only furthered the public's misunderstanding of what hackers and hacking is all about.
I mean, how many times do you see one of these idiots say something completely incorrect, inept, idiotic and off the wall like..."I'm going to hack the mainframe database gigabyte system" Then 17 seconds later they have broken into the DOD's database to find exactly what they're looking for.
I'd say steer clear of these movies and just get down to some real research at some place like
http://packetstorm.decepticons.org or www.securityfocus.com and last but certainly not least antionline.com
