BlackICE
BlackICE is a program created by ISS...Network ICE. It is the best personal firewall available...I only recommend that you set it on periniod because there is no reason not to. Anyone, if you have tried or are trying BlackICE or ICECAP please, comment on this thread about it becuase I would like to know other people's experiences with it. My company uses BleckICE with ICECAP as do I and we have gotten wonderous support from them and it is the best product that I know of! All who have not tried it, I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE YOU TOO!

I think i would rather use other firewalls such as Agnitums or Zone Alarms from the reviews i've seen it looks like they're better.

BlackIce taught me that you can indeed write code that is the equivalent of cow dung.

Ive been told by Blackice users that while its great at stopping incoming stuff,it doesnt stop any outgoing.....

I used to love old versions of BlackIce. It was really functional.
The new version of BlackIce is very eficient and it protects what goes out and what goes in... although the system that prevents outgoing is a bit anoying... almost paranoid.. it prevents unknown software to be runned or connect the internet, which is good for someone that likes to stay with what he has but awfull for someone that likes to try new things.
Good for people with very little experience on web and PC's, specially if they want to IRC all the time... it has also a good update schedule.

I haven't used the new version of BlackICE, but in my experience, it had some pretty sever holes in it. Granted, nearly all commercial firewalls do (especially free ones), but it just seemed a little too open for my tastes. Now I'm running a hardware firewall to block incoming attacks and I have a license for ZoneAlarm Pro for the individuals computers to block outging traffic. I know ZA isn't that great either, but I have it locked down so tight that it's nearly impossible for anything unauthorized to get in.

I was going to choose BlackICE but instead I got McAfee.. I dont like McAfee much but it seems to do the job.. Should I change to BlackICE or would you prefer McAfee over BI?
i dunno... outgoing communication is kind of a pain incoming it filters fine.

well my xp with blackice is pretty good (a while since I used it, so don't know about new features) but from my point of view the version I used missed the control options for the outbound traffic but maybe this has changed in newer version. But one thing I really missed what to be able to controle which ports that incomming traffic was allowed but of course this could be restricted on the os level.

I used the old BlackICE quite a bit. I t did have some pretty big holes in it and I eventually dumped BlackICE in favor of tiny's personal firewall. I did like, however the interface the BlackICE had, it was very barebones and was pretty functional IMHO. Overall, I would definatley try their new stuff if it has patched the security hole that plage the original.
On my scale of 1-10 I give BlackICE 7. Peace

I've used BlackIce awhile back, by default port 113 was opened. I don't know if they still send out by default with port 113 still open. I like Tiny and Zonealarm.

I used to be an avid fan of Blackice BEFORE iss bought it. Now it has become more useless then usefull, even tuning the firewall.ini file is worthless! I purchased my original copy of Blackice defender and simply loved it. I could set it to nervous, tweak the firewall.ini file to my liking and that was it.
Now iss is telling me i need to pay for an update. So why pay for something that will eventually cause problems, in some form or fashion? Not bad enough all the grief i went through in initial stages while they patched their code now i need to pay for more punishment? If im gonna pay my hard earned $$$ i want it to last longer then a year.
This has me rethinking the software firewall. Software firewalls are not firewalls!
I recently purchased a dlink 604 gateway router. Ill never use a software firewall again. (Although I do like Tiny pf) Within a few minutes of setting up the dlink and tweaking my rules Im set! This in conjunction with win 2k server log files, ill never need another resource hog of a software firewall again! Im not 100% happy with the dlink but i can see this is a step in the right direction.
So my advice is get a real firewall!

I like zone alarm pro with the added bonus firewall for linksys router.
But black Ice isnt all that bad.
-
I really like zonealarm pro 3.0, it is a big improvement on the older versions, and stops annoying pop up loading as well

Since I recognised, that you can completely crash old versions (!!) of BleckICE by sending a ICMP-Message (ping) with the size of 65535 Bytes (see bugtraq!!) i have no trust in this software anymore (or in any other windoze firewall...)!
Linux rulez!!!!

Ok, for the record, BlackICE actualy isnt NOT a firewall by classification. It doesnt really block anything but a set certain htings. And gives you no control over what its blocking. Just a few setting to block more. Therefore it is not a firewall, its and IDS (Intrusion Detection Software) and does nothing more than what IDS programs do. A Firewall is a fully configureble program to filter ALL data sent and recieved into a system. I reccomend Zone Alarm, or Atguard (If you can find a copy) as firewalls, but never BlackICE as a firewall. BlackICE is a good IDS tho.

BlackIce was not working for me! my buddy and i try every times we have something news an security if we can break the system, BlackIce was "sayd" nothing when i make contact with a server program an my buddies computer system. Zone alarm works a lot better but i prefer a spyware chekker to!

Humm from a real world standpoint and an owner swearing BlackIce was the best ohn his laptop, and then viewing logs, well his name was Dick and well he was one cause at a VPN this thing let in more stuff then I could evulate in the VPN log in a week. Post looks to me like an AD for BlackIce. Reaches for Ice Tea Green Sobie matter of fact, hint ice is not black unless it is thin and hidden in the shadows. :) nuff said

down w/ blackICE, up w/ TPF....tiny's a lot better than blkICE in my opinion
*/i don't have it currently because i had to reformat my hdd...& since a now out-of-state friend has my slackware.....:\ */

black ice ?? never ever again
I used the old version ( I purchased the original version). it´s like parking your porsche in your garage and the garage door is wide open. IDS ?? does not work at all. my recommodation:
tiny firewall for applikation , visnetic firewall for packet filtering ( or the former conseal ) and !!! for the hardware: trendmicro gatelock 200x for dsl connections. additionally a dsl router ( vigor 2000W ) and youre defence is better than the one from fort knox :-)
