Hello,
I have Win98 and installed ZoneAlarm firewall. When I was visiting Evidence-eliminator.com's website http://www.evidence-eliminator.com/d...0279955739044, it showed me contents of my hard-drive. How is it possible? Any ideas how to prevent somebody from accessing my hard drive?

lol It's just a dumb little link which points directly to your hard drive instead of to a web site. If you look at the address bar after clicking the link, you'll see what I mean. It's just a plot to try to get you to purchase their program (which, honestly, wouldn't change that at all). If you have a firewall and a good antivirus program, you're pretty well off... I mean you'll never be completely secure, but it's a very big step in the right direction.

Man, don't worry. They are using a number of scare tactics to have you buy the program, which is pretty much garbage to begin with. Also, when you refresh the same page, you get different things which are pretty scary, but harmless nonetheless... if you were truly under investigation it would not be that obvious.
Anyway, the source code for the page you were talking about, it's just showing you the contents of your drive as if you clicked on your hard drive in "My Computer." Also, they use Java Script functions to get the date, time, and other data, and use your IP address (which is pretty standard data collection anyway) and simply present it to you in a scary fashion... :)

As everyone has said, they do not have access to the contents of your HDD.
All they are doing is running code on your PC - but, importantly, this information is not available to them.
As alittlebitnumb said, a good firewall/anti virus scanner combination will protect you from genuine attacks (everyone has their own favourites, but nothing wrong with those recommendations).
The anti virus scanner will protect your PC from becoming infected, and the firewall will alert you to to the fact that your PC is trying to send data to another site without your consent.
btw this works on my version of Netscape - but that's hardly a big deal - it's up to you what web addresses you enter, or choose to accept!

Uhh, that evidence eliminator is one lame site... Did you check the testimonials, letters from happy users of the software? Get some laughs. :) However I didn't see the almightly "Contents Of The Hard Drive" feature there? I'm glad we have such experienced gurus as rcgreen who can do it just like that. ;)
Edit/Add: Oh, it randomizes the warning page every time you reload it. Now I saw that scary thing too. :eek:
