I suggest a Tech forum.

I think AO needs a forum focused to hardware issues and system builders, not dedicated to security explicitly. I had to spend 2 to 3 hours searching for any posts concerning using mutiple modems in win2k. I finally posted a new thread in chit chat. I do not think that chit chat gives a technical/hardware issue type thread a fair chance. I also think that the chit chat forum is too large to search through in order to avoid posting on something that has already been covered.
I hope that this issue has not been covered before as I only spent about an hour searching for a tech forum suggestion thread.

<edit> As a hardware engineer and system builder myself I can offer the AO community a lot of useful help and information in my field, I am fairly new to security and programming issues ( AO is quickly changing this ) and I feel a need for a place to review new advances in technology at a component level. </edit>

I think this would be a great contribution to AO. This site as a whole should be dedicated to sercuity issues but there are so many other issues that need addressing. I think this would be one. I wouldn't mind even fielding a few questions from a Tech forum. Good luck.

Great idea. I was looking for a post on XFree86 configurations about 2 weeks ago, and found nothing. There might have been something remotely similar to it in the Chit Chat forum, but who wants to dig around through the oodles and oodles of posts in there. A Hardware/Tech forum would be a great addition to AO.

Two more extremely valid reasons to begin a Tech/hardware related forum as a place for service techs, and anyone interested in building their own system. A place wher they can find/post hardware reviews on new technologies, as well as a place to show off their overclocking skills, new programs they have tried or written, or maybe even help on the development of new technical devices in general.

I really like this idea. When I have tech related questions and threads, I usually put them in General Chit Chat, but a forum dedicated the tech help/issues/support would be much better. :)

I think aeallison's idea deserves serious consideration.

It would be nice to see the tech related tutorials be separated also. I have such a hard time searching through the tutorials, and the search function could be improved a little... However, that is a great idea...

IMHO, AO has enough forums as it is. Tech issues can be posted under Chit Chat.

I went to this board, and I registered. I cruised it for a while and see the potential, but at present I am the only one logged into it and it has not been used much since the month of June.

I believe that the size od AO is large, and that we do have a lot of forums, although not all of them are used constantly, and I see one that has never been used, that one could be replaced am I not correct?

But it is a good board furthermore.

It had a lot of post.
People still check the board.
If interesting things occur, discussions develop.

Thanks noODle I will make a few posts and see how it goes, I suggest to anyone else who is looking for tech posts then AO is not the place for it. I guess we will just have to settle for a new community.

All you have to do is search google for tech forums and you'll be buried in the silly things.

My opinion is this board is for security issues and even that has a hard time staying on track, my vote is to not add a tech forum to AO.

I think it would just further dilute the forums by adding more places for junk to seep to. It isn't really necessary, IMO, given that GCC is doing a pretty good job containing it all anyway, and AO doesn't seem to have quite the right clientele mix and critical size to really take off in that respect more than generic troubleshooting threads or product discussions.

I am sorry noOdle, but that Techies Talk board is really lame, I really expected something more I guess, I gave them a very simple task and all I got was a couple of posted replies like one of their admins thinks that Apache web server is a stand alone OS. I went there with a hope that I could find the intelligence that we have here at AO, I will have to keep looking, I have been doing the google thing TechieChick, still nothing that compares to this community, therefore I implore AO to cater to us Techs a little and give us just one place to hang out, The war game forum has never been used our tech forum could replace that and add to cyberspace something that is in dire need.

You know that Internet system for dealing with this type of issue.

I really thought that security had a lot to do with hardware, if the hardware is not configured or installed properly then does the security not suffer?

And don't security professionals ever need to get there hands dirty once in a while?

I agree with all of you who disagree ( if this makes any sense at all ) that AO is security related and tends to stray, but as an experienced retailer and consultant in this industry, in order to keep someone focused on an endeavor, is to offer a few distractions. The distractoins need to be related to the goals, so as not to let the main idea stray from the focus.

I am not ranting, just trying to generate a little more constructive activity, and although this thread may never ultimately end up generating a new forum, it has given the newbies something to read that will help them understand what AO is all about.

I really hoped this thread would be real active, until oddly I recieved a few greenies where they stated that they agree with my views, but would not post it for fear of reprisals??

No offense..but if you can't find tech support here now and belive me people have tried asking the questions, opening up a new forum isn't going to magically make the answers appear. I understand and agree with generally what you're saying, just that I don't think it's going to work. There are a TON of forums dedicated to technical assistance you just have to find one that works for you.
I own a tech shop, do builds, upgrades, sales etc..but I don't come here when I need technical advice becouse I know I'm not going to get it and there is nothing wrong with that. I haunt about 5 different forums covering several ranges of topics from gaming to security and have given up on the concept of one stop shopping. :)

It would be a lot easier for things to be found if the majority of the real techies that know their stuff and used to frequent the AO grounds didn't get disgusted with the relative recent decline in the forums and bail...

This way, you'd have relatively new answers (last week instead of last year perhaps) along with the ability to actually track down and pm the person who wrote it and talk to them instead of reading their stuff from last month/year and futiley trying to find them because they left in disgust. As it is now, another forum is a waste of time. I think there's too many as it is but my opinion is but one.

Well aeallison, It looks like we are the minority around here. I think that hardware related and tech related forums would be good but I see the point that have been posted here. I think techiechic is right on this one. I will however start the hardware posts I have been prepareing in whatever forum seems most appropriate. I think that whoever has an instrest will read them so I'm good to go.
As far as forums being diluted as Terr was mentioning I would suggest that any forum not in use be removed. AO is big but it is also diverse. I believe that because of this constantly shifting diversity in clientel AO could use several forum changes. IMHO I say we get rid of some of the old to make room for the new.
