AtGuard is still my favorite firewall for Windows, although it's been defunct for quite some time now. If you do some looking, you might still be able to find it somewhere, though. I've not yet seen a product that matches its flexibility or that provides the ActiveX, Java, Javascript, Popup, and Cookie assistant functions that it does. Not saying there isn't one.... just that I haven't seen it. :)
And another "which is the best firewall" discussion.
You should have had a searche before posting, you would have found a ton of threads about it.
But ok, for me the best firewall is Agnitum Outpost: free + powerfull + easy to use = good equation.
I agree with problemchild, AtGuard is the best Personal Firewall that I have used, but yeah, somewhat hard to get you hands on.
i did look but i did'nt find any post with such firewalls as pc viper or visnetic.
i would especially like to know if any one has any comments about pc viper.i couldnt get it to work but im still trying.
i did try and get atgaurd but could'nt get it.
i use agnitun, has all the features inclueding activex and the other stuff

Almost any decent router/switch has firewall abilities nowadays.
I found a hard firewall router on circuit city.It is a siemens speed strean two port router for home pc.It cost 44.50
Personaly, I think too much emphasis is placed on firewalls ...
No firewall even comes close to making your machine secure ... Most of the security holes that a hacker will use are in applications you ALREADY allow access through your wall ... take for example something lame like the rather old 'Godmessage' exploits ... email bugs, MSN and ICQ exploitable overflow conditions ... What will your firewall do about these?
NOTHING, thats what ... simply log the packets for later analysis (If your wall even supports logging - many don't)
Turning to trojans... sure, a process based firewall will detect some of the poor public malware currently being pushed in the media as the biggest threat on the net - but ONLY if they are not modified - for that matter so will your AV solution. But these are just toys.
Other trojans use IPC techniques to get your default browser to do the communication for them ... and guess what, your firewall is probably all set up to allow it.
Although I may sound negative about walls (And don't even get me started on AV) I still suggest you have them because it keeps the less-capable wanabes away from your system for a while ... and lets face it, there are about a 100,000 wanabes to hacker ratio.
But, please, dont for one second think that your choice of firewall/AV solution is going to make a damn bit of difference if anyone with a degree of skill decides to crack your box for fun or profit. Security rhetoric is a multi-billion dollar industry and thats all it is, rhetoric.
Personaly, I've never met a local software firewall that can detect or packet log a VxD Layer-0 trojan ... and many can't even detect semi-available LSP/SPI trojans that wrap the base layer. And I've never met even a big-box or corporate solution that can do anything about socketless trojanware using promiscuous or parasitic quoted techniques.
Just one persons point of view, Those that read and trust in the manual will probably wish to differ ... and they are welcome to.

You know .... it always strikes me as freaking hillarious, that people take their security SOOOO seriously, that ...
1. They ignore all the indicators that the software is just comercialist garbage in favour of something that looks pretty. Seems like security comes second-place to aesthetics.
2. They throw out any options that require reading a manual and prefer instead the software with the big friendly 'Secure this machine from every threat' button - and a reasuring little 'you are now safe' indicator light. Seems security isn't worth reading a manual for.
2. They accept files from strangers and go around the trojan-infested warez scene because their computers security is soooo important that they don't want to spend any money.
Like I said ... this subject is covered already.
Zonealarm sucks so badly its funny - several very old trojans just dont get seen because they open their sockets BEFORE ZA runs, and because ZA isnt even a real firewall, it doesnt see sh!t.
BlackIce is no better.
You want free security without the manual ? Great, why don't you just paint a big red button on the side of your case and touch it whenever you get scared, because thats all the protection you are gonna get from crap like ZA and BlackIce ... you get what you pay for, so why don't you put a price on your system ands then go out BUY a real firewall and learn how to configure it.
Personaly, I don't think that option is the best for you since you seem to be one of those people that wants easy answers, and a real firewall needs a large degree of configuring, but if ever you can be bothered to learn what a firewall actualy is I suggest 'Sphynx' by BioData. Its still the only firewall I know that employs the TCP/IP SPI protocol chain-driven architecture correctly and has all the options you need to lock down anything.
But, that probably won't help you - because it doesnt claim to 'protect you right out of the box' nor does it have a big cute 'STOP' button on a bright cuddle-ware kinderface.
