well first off yes they are many tools that could help you gain root but you havent provided alot of information here for all we know you are some hacker looking for an easy fix to impress some friends or something. and if it is your work server you should have root access to the box if you have permmision (ie) the admin or owner of the system
sorry dude this seems a little odd to me could you provide more info and even at that i doubt any one will help you as i said its a little odd your asking this
peace
EDIT this should have been in newbie security questions antionlines how do i form is for site related questions
hehe... niiiiiccccee avatar prod
Tommyboy: few things here....
1. if your admin doesnt want you to have it, chances are best not to try and get it via "blackhat" means
2. not all of us admins are nazi, ask.. it might work he he... and buy yer admin a beer, it helps dull the senses....
3. as far as getting "root" if your extremely set on the subject a good place to start is knowing the details about what operating system and applications are running, your network architecture, and even the thinking style of your admin (I place a lot of faith in most admins... but the truth is his password is the name of the last girl he was able to coax into bed with him)
4. providing your admin keeps tabs on whats going on, he probably has patched the holes that most of the downloadable skript kiddie apps exploit.... yer best bet is to go back to #'s 1 and 2
good luckski
a. there are many ways around root.
b. there are many ways to gain root.
c. before anyone gives you any advice, you're going to need to provide information.
1. Do you have permission.
2. what is the server's operating system.
in short, THEJRC is right... just beer it up with the guy... buy him a stripper, she'll grind it out of him. ;)
hmmm none of my users ever bought me a stripper........
I want MY stripper :}
Rumor Mill: I _am_ a stripper...
I beleave what TommyBoy2034 is asking about a programs like sub7 & PC-Anywhere which gives root to your PC so your not tied down to a desktop's connection.
The 'BEST' one? Im not sure which one is the 'BEST' cause they are all about the same.
The server is windows2k
It is correct, I do not have permission for root. Here is the dilemma. I work a graveyard shift and have access to the internet. I want to play video games online, it is the only thing to keep me awake at night..but I can't...I can access all sorts of web pages..like this one, but I can't play video games. I'm not sure if obtaining root would even help the situation....but I'm trying. If I asked for root...they would laugh at me. Not trying to damage the server in any way...just trying to keep awake at night.
How about giving some information on why you can't play video games on the net. Error messages? Closed ports? More info might allow us to come up with a more legal way of helping you.
I think your other thread touches on this. You mentioned a proxy, but why isn't the proxy letting you on? Closed ports? A better understanding of your situation would be very useful.
Tommy,
Not to encourage you from not doing your work but how about using an anonymous proxy to go to miniclip.com or other online games? It won't require root and won't leave a clear trial behind. If you have terminal service on your machine then you can set up a server at your house and connect to that from work.
Nate
Hm..Yeah..Maybe if you try to play some game and run other pass..maybe will open others ports in the OS, and would be more dangerous. Using proxy would be bad in my opinion, maybe will be blocked or youll get laggy or netdelayed. And its no fun..
Maybe the beer idea will works :)
I'm trying to play Aliens vs. Predators 2
When I try to play the request just times out. This occurs with FTP program as well. Even yahoo games times out.
I can surf the net, just can't make any connections. It seems to me that port 21 is blocked....which is used to connect to many things. Bypassing the proxy would work for surfing...but I don't think it would work for playing a video game, since I can't control how it connects.
This is why I'm trying to obtain root..I figure I can make it so I cank access port 21 or something...I really don't know anything about proxies.
I believe that the server is running on win2k, however I can't be certain...since I don't have physical access to the computer that is doing the hosting.
Any help would be appreciated...as I work a graveyard...and we are allowed to play on the computer all night...just surfing is getting boring and I'm having a difficult time staying awake.
Can you please assign a positive post....
I'm only trying to stay awake at work...not trying to hack a system...
I'm just getting bad reviews because ppl think I'm trying to hack a system....far from it...I just want to play my Aliens vs. predator 2 at work to keep me awake....just can't figure out how to...can't even play online chess either....so please don't give me bad reviews.
I dont see how root access would solve any game connectivity problems. Try fixing the problems you have without illegally aquiring access you have not been granted.
Tommy:
I'm not going to neg you because it looks like plenty of people have done that already, but.....
What you're trying to do is both illegal and unethical, and I encourage you to rethink your plan before you get in some hot water. They may not mind you playing video games, but I suspect they would take an exceptionally dim view of hacking the servers. Your motive for doing it has absolutely no effect on the fact that you ARE trying to hack a server. That's what gaining root is.
Moreover, setting that issue aside, it seems to me that you really don't know what you're doing and can't identify the problem. Until you can, I think you had better leave well enough alone before you make a big mistake. There's an old saying: Measure twice, cut once.
Maybe they are blocking those ports for a reason? I might have missed it but where do you work? Some places will block most ports for the purpose of security...
And everyone is right, ask for the permissions. If you just want to play games to stay awake then tell him the situation, it doesnt make sense to do hacking when you can just use 'social engineering'
Do whats right and use your head,
I work in a juvenile detention center....at night we have 2 things to do...go to sleep or stay awake...that is all. I prefer to stay awake...because we can get in trouble if we go to sleep.
I know that if I ask for access it will be denied...of course the ports are blocked for security reasons...they will not grant me access to play video games....because on the technical level..we are not suppose to play video games. However, it is an understood thing..that we can do whatever it takes to stay awake as that is the only thing that matters. I've been told this in person by the night manager..but upper level management won't care.
Thank you for your replies, I will no longer seek advice, I figured that I would be seen as someone with malicious intent and wouldn't get any help.
I'll research and try it the hard way..probably the wrong way...suppose I should join the rest of ppl at work who just go to sleep and risk losing their job.
I'm in an IT course and the instructor told me to go here....he was way off.
Whether you realize it or not, you ARE someone with malicious intent, at least from a system administrator's perspective. You're trying to gain unauthorized access to a server for a purpose that you've just confirmed is against policy and would compromise the security of the company network. And you're trying to justify it by saying, "but I only want to play games," but that in no way changes the fact of what you're trying to do any more than a thrill justifies vandalism. That doesn't make you a bad guy, but it makes you dangerous.Quote:

You also have to realize that you've come to a site populated by system administrators who earn their living trying to prevent people from doing what you're attempting, and more or less run the server you're trying to crack. That would be akin to somebody walking into your juvenile detention center and asking for advice on how to break somebody out of jail.
If he sent you here thinking somebody would tell you how to crack servers, then yes, he was way off.Quote:

My advice is to find another way to occupy your time and keep awake. I suggest pornography. :D
Read a book, it's better if you want to keep your job.
