I was just wondering....
If I would turn off my firewall (Agnitum Outpost), would I get better download speed from my p2p program (WinMX)? Of course, considering the fact that I did NOT block any components of WinMX with Agnitum.

It shouldnt lower your speed IMHO, but you can check your connection speed with and without Outpost to see for sure.

I would venture to say no since the bottle neck should be at your modem/nic/whatever.
Yeah, same here I think that it shouldn't affect your speed since all a firewall does is filter unwanted traffic and ports.

unless your system is VERY antiquated, and underpowered, a firewall will not have an impact on your network speeds. UNLESS, you are being attacked or your ruleset is very convoluded (sp?) and difficult to parse...
I know in the case of ipchains and iptables the rules are met in order... the higher on the list a rule is matched the faster it is ACCEPTed/REJECTed/DROPed.. I'm not entirely sure this is the case in windows, but any useful (fast enough to not have you wanting to throw it out a window) computer will be able to match an ip/port/rule without interfereing with the speed of the data on the line.

WinMX has poor speeds with or without a firewall, your best bet for speed and the amount of files you can find would be Kazaa. You can use your firewall with it, and it has it's own antivirus to protect you from files that might damage your computer.
PuRe
Kaza is a good p2p program, but I wouldn't recommend the plain Kaza. Kaza Lite and Diet Kaza are similar and better, because they don't have the pop-ups and the spyware that Kaza has.

>First of all this is an old post.
>But since it's up.
>Well Kazza P2P is causing a lot of viruses it seems like.
>I would suggest getting the Kazza lite. It seems that Kazza lite isn't cause many errors.

If you think your firewall is slowing up traffic, you might want to check to see what it's logging. If it's underpowered and logging all traffic (accepts and denies), you might want to trun off logging on accepts. Shouldn't make much of a difference on a small network with little traffic though.
If you are like I am and are lacking in the "technical skills" department, but at the same time, miss using WinMX, there is a quick, easy and free solution it is called MXPIE. There is no spyware or anything else bundled with it. For those a little more savvy and courageous, there is even a manual option.
So come on back to WinMX, and download to your hearts content. Thanks to these updates, not even the power of the RIAA can stop a network.
IF you have downloaded WinMX and still cannot connect, you can even get personalized realtime help. Just go to this link WinMX Channels Copy the Room name appropriate for your Language and paste it into your WinMX chat screen, then press the Join Button. This works on version 3.53 and up even if you are not connected. It allows you to join into chatrooms set up for you to get immediate help.
Everything you need at the MXPIE Website Free and Spyware free.
I have also found a site for Computer problem that is nice, prompt and VERY helpful. If there is a problem you need an answer to, they can help.
Realtime help available for WinMX 3.53 users having trouble getting connected. Go to WinMX Channels.
ermmm, the thread is 2 years old. I'm sure the op has found the solution by now. When the date's are flashing, no need to give cpr to a corpse. You can start a new thread on the subject with updated info and that would probably be more beneficial to all.
cheers
Wow...
That post sounded like an ad and I hate ads!!!
Sorry, had to get that out of the way
